* Lesley Pleasant, PhD, publishes article

"Dogeared Hate: Yilmaz Arslan’s Brudermord/Fratricide (2005), a new type of Heimatfilm,” an article by Lesley Pleasant, associate professor of German, has been published in the April/May 2016 volume of the German Studies journal, Pandaemonium Germanicum. This paper focuses on the Heimat (home) metaphor of the Pit Bull in Yilmaz Arslan’s Brudermord/Fratricide (2005), a film about Turkish migrants in Germany. Updating the genre for a world of fluid boundaries, Arslan’s film self-reflexively posits transnational Heimatfilm as a possible bridge between “Others," as a means to facilitate conversations that might decrease the violence of the present dog-eat-dog world of the margin the film portrays.

Athletics

* Aces shutout Bradley to clinch series

Another strong outing from starting pitcher Alex Weigand and opportunistic base-running from Boomer Synek proved the difference for the University of Evansville baseball team on Sunday afternoon as the Aces sealed a second consecutive Missouri Valley Conference series victory with a 2-0 decision over Bradley at Charles H. Braun Stadium.

Weigand, a freshman left-hander, looked every bit an experienced arm on the mound for the second straight week as the Bourbonnais, Ill., native struck out five over six scoreless innings to help the Aces (20-14, 4-2 MVC) to their fourth shutout victory of the season.

“Weigand isn’t throwing like a freshman anymore,” explained Synek, who is UE’s every day starter behind the plate. “He’s a great competitor, and he’s not scared of any of the teams that he’s going up against. He did a really good job of letting the game come to him today, and he was commanding his off-speed pitches today better than he has all year.”

“That’s back-to-back weekends that Alex has answered the call for us in a series-deciding game,” UE head coach Wes Carroll said. “He put the team on his back again, and gave us a chance to win the series. That’s just a fantastic outing and a gutsy performance from him.”

Weigand was hardly the lone standout for the Aces on the mound as both Brent Jurceka and Ryan Brady proved effective as well, holding the Braves (16-13, 2-3 MVC) to just one hit over the final three innings.

“I think our bullpen was really locked in this entire weekend,” Carroll said. “They did a tremendous job for us, and I think they’re the reason we won this series. Our relievers have been putting up a lot of goose eggs on the scoreboard recently, and it’s a great thing to see.”

For the weekend, the UE bullpen allowed just three hits over 11 innings of work.

While Weigand and BU starter Brent Stong battled for much of the contest, the Aces were unable to cash in on a number of scoring opportunities over the game’s first seven innings. That would all change in the bottom of the eighth. Ben Olson took to the mound for the Braves and gave up a one-out single to Synek to put a runner on, and the Braves hurler would throw a wild pitch moments later to move him into scoring position. From there, another BU reliever, Eric Scheuermann tossed two more errant pitches to allow the run to score.

“I was definitely keeping an eye on the pitchers with the situation that we were in,” Synek said. “I was just trying to make good reads on the ball. Coach Carroll told me to be prepared for them if they bounced a couple or got a little bit wild, and it just ended up happening that way.”

Later in the frame, the Aces tacked on another as Nathan Stong issued a bases-loaded walk to Shain Showers to make it 2-0.

From there, Jurceka, who struck out three during the seventh and eighth innings, gave up a single and a walk in the ninth, paving the way for Brady to take the mound. The sophomore out of St. Louis allowed a walk to load the bases, but he bounced back emphatically by striking out both Andy Shadid and Carson Weber to end the game.

“Brady is just a different animal when he gets into the game,” Synek explained. “You see him in the dugout, and he seems like a happy-go-lucky kind of guy, but when he steps in between the lines and gets that ball, he means business and operates like he’s the best guy on the field in that moment. It’s really cool to see him dig deep and make that kind of progress.”

Jurceka picked up the win to move to 4-2 on the season, and Brady earned his second save.

The Aces will return to action on Wednesday with another home contest at Braun Stadium. UE will welcome in Western Kentucky before setting out for another MVC series at Missouri State. Tuesday’s previously scheduled game against UT Martin has been canceled.

The four shutouts are the most for the Aces since the 2013 season. The last time UE won its first two conference series was 2014. Since 1978, UE is 51-38 against Bradley. The Aces are also 223-198 vs. Illinois schools over that time span, including 6-2 this season. Last season, the Braves picked up the first two wins in Peoria before the Aces left town with a 10-0 seven inning win on the final day. In 2014, the last time BU paid a visit to Evansville, the Aces won all three games by a combined 22-8 score.

* Parr's two home runs lead Aces to 7-4 win at ISU

A day after a perfect 3-for-3 day at the plate, Chandra Parr was 3-4 with a pair of home runs to lead the University of Evansville softball team to a 7-4 win at Illinois State on Sunday afternoon at Marian Kneer Stadium.

With the win, the Purple Aces (18-20, 6-9 MVC) clinched their second-consecutive Missouri Valley Conference series win after splitting Saturday’s doubleheader against the Redbirds (13-26, 5-8 MVC).

“This team just continues to amaze me with their fight and will to win,” Aces head coach Mat Mundell said. “We made some great adjustments in pregame and they really paid off for is with some huge hits. This team is fun to watch!”

Parr and Morgan Lambert each had three hits on the day. Lambert hit a solo home run of her own, her third of the season. Morgan Florey once again did it all for UE. She went the distance in the circle, striking out seven batters en route to her 11th win over the year. At the plate, she was 1-1 with a home run, three walks, two RBIs and two runs scored.

After a scoreless two innings, Evansville was first on the board in the top of the third. A 1-out single by Parr brought Florey to the plate, who homered to left giving the Aces a 2-0 lead.

Illinois State got the two runs back and plated two more in the third to take a 4-2 lead. A Riley Strandgard 2-run homer capped off the four run inning. Evansville made its move in the top of the fifth as Parr lead the frame off with a solo shot to right. One out later, Lambert did the same as her homer to center tied it up at 4-4.

Florey clamped down at that point, giving up just one ISU hit over the final four frames. Her work paid off as the offense was able to take the lead for good in the top of the seventh. Another leadoff home run for Parr gave UE a 5-4 lead before RBI singles from Michal Luckett and Susan Norris gave the Aces some insurance. In the bottom of the seventh, Florey sat the Redbirds down in order to seal the win.

Evansville remains on the road as they travel to Carbondale, Ill. for a Wednesday doubleheader at Southern Illinois. Next weekend, the Aces are in Terre Haute for a 3-game set at Indiana State.

* UE Men's Basketball to open 2016-17 season at Louisville

A road contest at national powerhouse Louisville will mark the season opener for the University of Evansville Men’s Basketball team as the program is formulating its non-conference slate for the 2016-17 season.

Louisville, who went 23-8 last season and finished 16th in the NCAA RPI, will be the first contest for the Purple Aces on November 11.  It will mark the first time the Aces and Cardinals have met on the hardwood since December 2, 1957, a game that saw the Aces take a 92-90 decision in Evansville.

The non-conference home slate is also shaping up to be a memorable one.  Teams set to make the trip to the Ford Center in November and December include: Murray State, Boise State, Bowling Green, and Norfolk State.

“Our staff has worked very hard to add some great games to our schedule next year.  Louisville is always a great team and will be a good road test for our team,” Aces head coach Marty Simmons said.  “Having home non-conference games that include Murray State, Boise State, Bowling Green and Norfolk State will be some great games that will get our fans excited for the season.”

Murray State comes to the Ford Center on Saturday, Nov. 19.  The afternoon game begins a huge day of basketball action that will see USI host three games of the Hall of Fame Classic later in the day.  The MVC/Mountain West Challenge makes its way back to Evansville on December 3 as the Aces welcome Boise State.  UE opened the renewed series in 2015-16 with a bigtime 85-77 win at Fresno State.  The Broncos were 20-12 last year.

Evansville is set to take on Bowling Green in a December 6 home game.  The Aces and Falcons have not met since 2001.  Another home game set for later in December will be Norfolk State.  The Spartans are a strong team out of the MEAC who have finished at .500 or above in each of the last five seasons while making the postseason in each of those years.

“We are really excited about how our schedule is shaping up for next season,” director of athletics Mark Spencer said.  “Our coaching staff and administration have been working together to develop a non-conference schedule with a regional and national focus.  We will continue to add to our schedule in the coming weeks, and we hope to announce some exciting opponents in the near future.”

During Thanksgiving weekend, UE will be playing their in-season tournament in Nashville, making for a convenient holiday trip for Aces fans.  The second “Challenge in Music City” will feature three games against mid-major opponents at Nashville Municipal Auditorium.

New season ticket deposits will be accepted beginning on June 6 while renewals for existing season ticket holders will be sent out on June 13.  On September 1, season tickets go on sale to the general public without a deposit.
