* Robb Waltner named new University of Evansville librarian

The University of Evansville has named Robb Waltner as the new university librarian. He will begin his new duties on June 1.

Waltner has 22 years of experience in academic libraries. He comes to UE from the University of North Florida, where he was head of acquisitions and collection development for that university’s Thomas G. Carpenter Library. Following the completion of his MA degree he spent four years as UE’s Periodicals Librarian.

He earned both his Master of Arts degree in library, media, and information science, and his Bachelor of Arts degree in English from the University of South Florida.

“We are very happy that Robb has accepted the position of university librarian,” said UE president Thomas A. Kazee. “Robb has an impressive and extensive record of experience in academic libraries, and will foster a culture of innovation and collaborative interaction with faculty, staff, and students.”

At UE, Waltner will be providing leadership and working with five professional librarians and seven paraprofessionals to meet the information needs of the University community. The University’s newly renovated library serves the University faculty, nearly 2,500 students from 43 states and 51 countries, and the general public.

“The library at UE is an important campus intellectual and informational resource center,” said Michael Cullen, UE senior vice president for academic affairs. “Robb’s expertise, vision and leadership will be invaluable as we continue that tradition.”

* UE Theatre Presents Shadow Hour in May Studio Theatre

The University of Evansville Department of Theatre proudly presents Ralph Tropf’s Shadow Hour, opening tonight at 7:30 p.m., in the May Studio Theatre. Additional performances are at 7:30 p.m. on March 19, 21, 23, and 24, and at 2:00 p.m. on March 20.

Shadow Hour is Tropf’s gripping drama surrounding the trial and conviction of a United States senator, Adam Martin. After a moment of passion, what was intended to be a platonic date between two colleagues soon becomes the center of a nationally disputed court case. The country watches as the trial attempts to discover the truth from both a defendant and plaintiff who aren’t certain of it themselves. Through intricately woven scenes of juror deliberation and suspenseful cross-examination, Tropf’s tale becomes a provocative discussion of agency, responsibility, and guilt.

Brogan Lozano, a senior from San Antonio, Texas, directs the student-led production of Shadow Hour. Tucker Steinlage, a junior from Buford, Georgia, serves as the scenic designer; Eva Porras from Kingwood, Texas, is the costume designer; Avery Reagan, a junior from Conyers, Georgia, is the lighting designer; Matt McDonald, a freshman from Indianapolis, Indiana, serves the sound designer; and Peter Orkiszewski, a senior from Cincinnati, Ohio, is the dramaturg.

Junior Chris Brumley from Louisville, Kentucky, portrays the defendant Senator Martin, while junior Hannah Connally from Arlington, Texas, plays the plaintiff Christy Connelly. Rounding out the ensemble are freshmen Kristopher Adams from Houston, Texas, Jennifer Baker from Vernon Hills, Illinois, Alexandra Curren from McKinney, Texas, Kathleen Finch from College Station, Texas, and Luke Kelly from Dubuque, Iowa; juniors Robbie Love from St. Louis, Missouri, and Kendall Reasons from Spring Hill, Tennessee; and seniors Amelya Hensley from Lexington, Kentucky, Glyne Pease from Las Vegas, Nevada, Tara Sorg from Haubstadt, Indiana, and Grace Theobald from Louisville, Kentucky.

Ticket prices are $11 for adults and $9 for senior adults, students, and UE faculty and staff. UE students may obtain one free student rush ticket beginning at noon on the day of the performance they wish to attend. Tickets may be purchased by calling 812-488-2031, Monday through Friday, noon to 5:00 p.m.

* Scam alert – copiers and printers

Individuals on campus are again randomly receiving scam calls from individuals requesting departmental printer and/or copier information (model or serial numbers, cartridge numbers, etc.). Keep in mind, UE current printer/copier vendors already have access to UE equipment and supply information and will never call departments requesting it. In some cases, scammers are calling and asking for individuals by name, saying that they need copier/printer information for repair purposes. A scammer's intent is to obtain information and to bill the University. Please do not give them any information. Simply tell the caller that you are not authorized to provide information and refer them to the Office of Administrative Services. Usually this quickly ends the conversation.

If you receive a scam call, please report it to Kim Winsett, Office of Administrative Services, at ext. 2940.

* Purple Aces Club Golf Classic set for May 16

Oak Meadow Country Club will serve as host to the 2016 Purple Aces Club Golf Classic on Monday, May 16. One of the most important and entertaining fundraisers of the year, the golf classic is open to all. Individuals can sign up to play for $150 while foursomes are available for $600. The entry fee includes your golf, a boxed lunch, drinks, a polo shirt, and post-golf hors d’oeuvres.

On-site registration and lunch begin at 11:00 a.m. with a shotgun start commencing the action at noon. A post-golf reception will begin at approximately 5:00 p.m. with the awards ceremony taking place 30 minutes later.

A registration link will be posted very soon, but to reserve your spot immediately, contact Amy Davidson at 812-488-2199 or ad204@evansville.edu.

The format is a four person scramble where everyone hits off the tee. Teams start on the regular tee and move back after a birdie, up for a bogie and up after two consecutive pars. All players putt and there is a maximum of two putts on each green. Mulligans will not be available. In their place, a length of string will be provided to make a putt without an additional stroke being added. Once a length is used, it cannot be reused. Additional lengths may be purchased.

This format should allow for normal pace of play as it adds no additional strokes and actually eliminates strokes as a team from the fairway.

Sponsorship opportunities are also available and include a hole sponsor, longest drive, closest to the pin, carts, reception, and event title.

* Aces fall short in finale against Drake

Another hard-fought game saw the University of Evansville softball team come up just one run short as they fell to Drake by a final of 3-2 on Sunday afternoon in the series finale.

Evansville (11-12, 0-3 MVC) fell behind by a 2-0 score in the third inning, but tied it up behind a Morgan Florey double in the bottom half of the frame. The Bulldogs (12-10, 3-0 MVC) came right back with what would be the winning run in the top of the fourth inning, taking the 3-2 win.

Florey and Danielle Freeman notched the Aces two hits on the day. Amanda Blankenship made the start, throwing the first two innings, giving up just two hits. Florey went the rest of the way, allowing three runs in five innings of work. She took the loss. Nicole Newman picked up her third win of the weekend for DU. She went the distance, giving up two runs on two hits.

Drake pushed the first two runs of the game across the plate in the top of the third inning before Evansville had its first chance in the bottom of the frame. Chandra Parr was hit by a pitch and advanced to third as Danielle Freeman hit one through the left side. The duo advanced to second and third on the throw.

With two outs, Courtney Land drew a walk to bring Morgan Florey up to the plate. Florey hit a high pop to left field that was dropped, allowing the tying runs to score. The Bulldogs had a response of their own, posting a single run in the top of the next frame to retake the lead at 3-2.

Newman took care of business from there as she threw all seven innings on her way to her third victory of the weekend.

A trip to Lawrence, Kansas, is up next for UE as they will play Kansas in a doubleheader on Tuesday. Game one is set for 11:00 a.m. with the second to follow.
