* Greek Life Information Panel Tonight at 8 p.m.!

Correction from Flush Flash: This event will be held at 8 p.m. tonight in Room 170 (Smythe Lecture Hall), Schroeder Family School of Business Administration Building.  Ever wondered what all this talk of fraternities and sororities is really about? Members of the Greek Community want to share their experiences with you! Please come and ask any questions you may have (don't hold back, there's no such thing as a stupid question!) and they will do their best to answer as completely and honestly as possible. There will be a raffle for individuals who sign up and pay for Greek Recruitment. The top prize is a flat screen TV, so be sure to come to the info panel, learn about Greek Life, and register for recruitment! This is open to any interested students - male or female!

 

What's Happening Today

* First I-House of the Semester: Iraq

Take part in the very first I-House presentation of the 2011-2012 year - it will feature Iraq! Four Iraqi students will share information about their country with us TODAY at 7 p.m., Aug. 31 on the second floor of Ridgway University Center in the Class of 1959 Gallery. Come learn about the customs, food, languages, and quirks of this diverse country!

 
* Catholic Mass in Neu Chapel Tonight

Mass will be held at 9:30 tonight in Neu Chapel, with Fr. Brendan Moss, O.S.B., presiding as celebrant. This Wednesday night Mass is a shorter version of Sunday Mass that lasts about a half-hour, with a quiet, candle-lit atmosphere - a great mid-week break for prayer. Confession will be available and the Rosary will be prayed beginning shortly after 9 p.m. Father Brendan is a monk of St. Meinrad Archabbey, and teaches homiletics and serves as director of enrollment at the seminary there. There will be prizes! This event is sponsored by the Office of Counseling Services, Student Activities Board and the Hughes Hall Staff.

 
* Student Organization Fair

Want to get involved?  Come to the Center for Student Engagement’s Student Organization Fair.  The Organization Fair will be held on Sept. 5 from 4-7 p.m. There will be a wide variety of student groups showcasing their organizations.  Stop by during the Labor Day Picnic which is being held on the Ridgway University Center’s East Terrace and Lawn.

 

 
* UE Bookstore Labor Day Weekend Sale

The UE Bookstore will have a Labor Day Weekend sale starting Friday, Sept. 2 and running through the Labor Day holiday, Sept. 5.  All UE clothing items will be 15% off the original price.  Items already on clearance or discounted are excluded from this discount.  The store will have regular store hours during this weekend and Monday. The store will be closed on Sunday as always.  You can view the store on Facebook for additional information if needed.

* TIAA-CREF Counseling Sessions Dates

The TIAA CREF representative will be on the UE campus on Wednesday, Sept. 7 and Friday, Sept. 9 for individual counseling sessions. * Last Day to Change Meal Plan

Today is the last day students are able to change their meal plan for the fall semester.  Meal plan changes can be entered by selecting the “Change Your Fall Meal Plan” link on the right side of the Residence Life website at http://residencelife.evansville.edu. Meal Plan change requests are due by 5 p.m., Aug. 31.

Attention UE juniors and seniors! Get connected to a professional in your field –  register to participate in the 2011-2012 Student-Alumni Mentoring Program TODAY! As a junior or senior of the University of Evansville, you have the opportunity to participate in the Student-Alumni Mentoring Program.  The goal is to directly connect current juniors and seniors with alumni and friends of UE, in order to establish a variety of professional support.  Mentors will work with students on developing their professional network, job shadowing, resume development and much more!

* Writing Center to Open Thursday, September 1

The Writing Center will open this Thursday, Sept.1, to assist students with writing assignments. If you would like help with a paper or other assigned writing, please bring your draft plus the prompt (writing assignment) from your professor with you to the Writing Center for your session with a writing tutor. If you have yet to begin your first draft, you're still welcome! A tutor will review the assignment with you and help you get started. 

To make an appointment for a 50-minute session with a tutor, just call 488-2391. Or, you may simply come to the Writing Center without an appointment and, if a tutor is available, he or she will work with you.

Hours of operation are as follows:

Monday: noon to 5 p.m.
Tuesday through Thursday: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Friday: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Evenings: Sunday through Thursday 7 to 10 p.m.

The Writing Center is located in Room 253 of Clifford Memorial Library, which is on the southernmost end of the Bower Suhrheinrich Library. The entrance faces Koch Center.
 

 
* New Safe Ride Number and Program

The Student Government Association will now be hosting their SAFE RIDE program through Unity Taxi. From now on the SAFE RIDE number will be 812-421-9999. Students should begin using the new number and company immediately, as River City - Yellow Cab will stop providing services Aug. 30.
 

 
* Volunteers Needed for Angel Mounds Native American Days

Angel Mounds will be hosting its annual Native American Days on Friday, Sept. 23 through Sunday, Sept. 25. UE volunteers are needed to assist with event activities. There are various shifts available for volunteers over all 3 days. Please feel free to stop by the Office of Community Service Initiatives (previously Volunteer Services Office) or email cd141@evansville.edu for more information.

Please view your Financial Aid for 2011-12 on WebAdvisor under the link “Financial Aid by Year.”  Your WebAdvisor record will indicate the status of each type of aid you have received and indicate if further action is required on your part to finalize the aid. Please return all required documents and/or take the necessary action steps indicated as soon as possible, so that your aid will be applied to your UE Student Account. Please contact the Office of Financial Aid at
(812) 488-2364 or come see us in Olmsted Hall, room 116 if you have questions about finalizing your financial aid.

When viewing your Student Account information on WebAdvisor, remember that the “View Bills” link is a snapshot of your account on the first of each month. To view your current account balance, which reflects activity between billing statements (such as payments you have made or new aid that has been deducted), you should view the link called “My Account Summary by Term.” Please contact the UE Office of Student Accounts at (812) 488-2565 or come see us in Olmsted Hall, room 105 if you have questions about your Student Account.

Sympathy to...

* Family and Friends of Virginia Grabill

University of Evansville Professor Emerita Virginia Lowell Grabill passed away Monday, Aug. 29, at her home in Evansville. She was 92.

Dr. Grabill is best remembered for her 32 year teaching career at the University of Evansville. At some point she taught Grammar and Linguistics, History of the English Language and Advanced Composition. She oversaw the production of the yearbook and newspaper, served as University Ombudsman, Dean of Women, Chairman of the University Senate and started and directed the Creative Writing Program. She wrote so many comments on student papers that they remarked that their papers bled.

She graduated Summa Cum Laude from Wheaton College where she took Latin with Ruth Bell Graham. She previously taught at the University of Illinois, Western Illinois University, Taylor University and Bethel College. Many of her students became Christians because she crossed their paths. 

She was married to Dr. Paul Grabill, another UE English Department favorite, who preceded her in death in 1980. Surviving are her daughter, Cindy, of Evansville; four sisters-in-law; nieces and nephews; and three grand-cats.

Services will be 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 3, at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, 2300 Washington Avenue, with burial in Oak Hill Cemetery. Friends may visit Friday from 2 to 8 p.m. at Alexander East Chapel, 2115 Lincoln Avenue, and Saturday from 10 a.m. until service time at the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to Paul and Virginia Grabill Memorial Scholarship Fund at the University of Evansville or to a favorite charity. Condolences may be made online at www.AlexanderEastChapel.com

 

 
* Family and Friends of Thelma Brittingham

University of Evansville Professor Emerita Thelma Brittingham, 91, of Evansville, passed away Friday, Aug. 26, at Holiday Village

In 1944 she received a B.S. in Nursing Science from Evansville College and a diploma from Protestant Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing. She earned a B.S. in Education in 1947 and an M.S. in Nursing Education from Indiana University in 1955.

She was Director of the School of Nursing and Nursing Service at Deaconess Hospital from 1947-1951. After two years as Lt. JG in the Navy Nurse Corps, she was Clinical Coordinator for the Evansville College-Baptist Hospital School of Nursing and Acting Director of Nursing Service for Baptist Hospital. She was Supervisor of Pediatrics and developed and taught the Nursing of Children Course at Deaconess.After rejoining the UE faculty in 1967, she taught Nursing of Children and was active in developing Continuing Education in Nursing on the regional, state, and national level. She was also Project Director and Teacher of the School Nurse Practitioner Program for the University of Evansville. She retired from UE in 1985.

She is survived by a niece, Mary Ann Rudenborg of Martinsville; and nephews, Mark Hanley, John Kent, and Joel David of Evansville; Charles Paul of Jasper; and James David of Plainfield.

Private services will be held for family only.

* Women's Soccer Looks For Second Straight Victory At Xavier Wednesday

With a busy week ahead, the University of Evansville women’s soccer team starts the three-match week on the road at Xavier University Wednesday. The contest is set to begin at 6 p.m. at XU Soccer Complex in Cincinnati, Ohio.
