President Kazee to Wear Polar Bear Suit Today at 1:30 as finale to Green Energy Awareness Week
|
|
This week, a team of UE students called Evolving Evansville Energy (E^3) hosted Green Energy Awareness Week with the goal of reducing overall campus energy consumption by at least 5 percent over the previous week. President Kazee agreed that if the goal was met, he would don a polar bear suit and address the campus community. The team surpassed the five percent energy savings in just three days.
Therefore, President Kazee will appear in the polar bear suit at 1:30 p.m. TODAY, Friday, November 13 on the East Terrace Lawn.
E^3 placed second in the recent Changemaker Challenge on campus hosted by the Institute for Global Enterprise. The team began the energy conservation initiative on UE’s campus and they have plans to focus efforts on the city of Evansville in the near future.
In addition to the campus-wide energy conservation challenge, students have provided information all week about green energy through presentations and events. Students were invited to try out equipment including the Kill-a-Watt meter and an energy-generating pedal charger.

Fire Prevention and Safety
|
|
Recent UE fire drills have highlighted some very important points to be aware of, for your safety and that of others:
• When you hear a fire alarm, always treat it seriously
• Evacuate the building promptly and stay out until directed to return
• Use the closest exit – seconds can make a difference in a fire
• It is OK to use emergency doors during a fire alarm
• If you are the last one out of a room, close the door behind you
For good information on fire prevention, see the NFPA's Fire Prevention website: http://www.nfpa.org/safety-information/safety-tip-sheets

UE Trustee Rose Mays Honored by Independent Colleges of Indiana
|
|
University of Evansville alumna and member of the board of trustees Rose Mays was recently inducted into the Indiana Academy at its 45th annual symposium. She was one of four honorees recognized by the Independent Colleges of Indiana for lifetimes of achievement and contribution to the state of Indiana.
Mays, an Indiana University School of Nursing professor emeritus, recently retired from IU after a 36-year career. During her time there, she worked to improve life for vulnerable adolescents by carrying out a research and professional service program focused on health promotion and disease prevention.
Mays is active in various education, health and social service organizations, including her alma mater, the University of Evansville.
Some of the many contributions that she, in partnership with her late husband William G. Mays, has made to UE include:
• A contributing founder of the Zerah Priestly Carter Endowed Scholarship (named after the first African American to graduate from UE in 1938).
• Dr. Rose M. Mays Endowed Scholarship, awarded to an African American student with financial need and academic merit with a 3.0 GPA, annually.

Besides serving on UE’s Board of Trustees, Mays is a founding and current member and past president of the University of Evansville African American Alumni Association (UEAAA) She also served as chair of UE’s Annual Fund Campaign (1995-1996)

UE Women's Basketball announces signees
|
|
University of Evansville head women’s basketball coach Oties Epps has announced the signing of a pair of student-athletes to National Letters of Intent to begin play for the Purple Aces next season.
Headed to UE are a pair of Indiana natives - Kaylan Coffman and Macie Lively. Coffman is currently attending Benton Central HS in Oxford while Lively is from Tipton where she plays for Tipton HS.
“We’re extremely excited to welcome Kaylan and her family to our program. Kaylan is a great student and she comes from a good family,” Epps said. “She will give us size in the front court. However, her ability to run the floor, shoot from mid-range and from the 3-point arc will separate her from other post players that she will compete against. In addition to this, Kaylan is long and rangy and she possesses the ability to change shots around the basket. She is an excellent fit for our transition and pressing system.”
Coffman has had a strong career in her time at Benton Central, averaging double figures over her last two seasons. As a junior, Coffman notched 13.7 points per game while grabbing 5.4 rebounds per contest.
A 2-time All-Hoosier Conference player, Coffman was also named to the Lafayette Journal & Courier All-Area First Team for the last two years. As a sophomore, she was named the Journal & Courier Big School Player of the Year. Hoosier Basketball Magazine named her a Second Team All-State player as a junior as she led her team to a 25-1 mark on their way to a sectional championship. Prior to that, Benton Central posted records of 16-4 and 22-4.
Tipton High School player Macie Lively also signed her NLI and is a decorated scorer in her high school career.
“We are pleased and excited to welcome Macie and her family to our program. Macie comes from a good family and has strong character and is an excellent student. Macie will play the point guard position for us and we are confident that she will strengthen our program at that position,” Epps explained. “She has a high basketball IQ and is a quick, tenacious defender. In addition to this, Macie is capable of scoring from 3-point range, mid-range and at the rim. She will be a welcomed addition to our back court.”
Lively is a 2-time All-Hoosier Conference player and has also been recognized by the IBCA in each of the last two seasons. In 2015, she was an IBCA Underclass Small School All-State student-athlete while in 2014, she was an IBCA Underclass All-State Honorable Mention. As a junior last season, Lively averaged 18.5 points per game, 3.2 assists, 4.6 rebounds and 2.2 steals per contest.
As a junior, she was named the Kokomo Kiwanis Co-Player of the Year while garnering Kokomo Tribune 1st Team All-Area accolades. Lively also earned AP All-State Honorable Mention honors as a junior as she scored her 1,000th career point that season.

Aces Men's Basketball signs Dru Smith
|
|
One of the top players in the Evansville area is staying home as Dru Smith has signed his National Letter of Intent to play for the University of Evansville men’s basketball team next season.
Head coach Marty Simmons is excited about adding Smith to his squad.
“We love everything about Dru. He is a great student, comes from a great family and is the total package as a basketball player,” Simmons said. “He is a versatile player who has great court vision.”
Smith attends Reitz High School and had a stellar year as a junior, posting 10.5 points, 5.4 rebounds and 4.5 assists. His efforts led the Panthers to a 29-2 overall record as they were the runners-up in the Class 4A State Tournament.
A 6-3 guard, Smith brings great length, which saw him register an abundance of deflections in his high school career.
“He causes a lot of deflections and does a great job of making the guys around him better,” Simmons added. “Dru is very long and athletic and we think he will be a great fit for us.”

Women's Soccer set for NCAA Tournament
|
|
For the 5th time in program history, the Purple Aces are on their way to the NCAA Tournament thanks to a victory over Loyola in the MVC Championship on Sunday. Evansville will play the top seed in the country – defending National Champion Florida State.
It marks the first visit to the Big Dance since 2008 when the Aces defeated Indiana State in the MVC Championship match before traveling to Missouri in a first-round match-up. UE is 0-4 in its previous four NCAA matches.
“It has been a good trip so far, we had a good day of training today and are looking forward to playing tomorrow,” head coach Krista McKendree said. “We got on the field today and really worked on the tactics that we think will give us the best chance tomorrow night.”
“We had a long travel day yesterday, so when we got down here, we got the girls off of their feet and tried to get them caught up on their rest,” McKendree added. “Today we got down to business, but tonight, we really want the girls to enjoy this experience and clear their minds before tomorrow’s match.”
Sunday’s MVC Championship match provided plenty of intensity. Evansville out shot Loyola by a 22-11 tally with each squad getting three shots on goal. The 90 minutes of regulation coupled with two 10-minute overtime periods was not enough as the match went into penalty kicks. After Allie Arguello and Kayla Smith made the first two PK’s, Evansville held a 2-1 advantage. The game changer came next when Whitney Biggs made the save on Vichich Luc. From there, Abby Springer, Bronwyn Boswell and Emily Richardson each made their attempts to clinch the championship.
Whitney Biggs was named the Most Valuable Player of the 2015 Missouri Valley Conference Championship as she shut out the competition in 200 minutes of action in the tournament. She made four saves in the tournament, but had her biggest moment in penalty kicks as her save was the clincher in the triumph over Loyola. On Tuesday, the honors continued to roll in for Biggs as she was named the MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week thanks in part to a 4.0 GPA. Biggs was also named the MVC Goalkeeper of the Week (Nov. 4). Filling in for an injured Simone Busby, Biggs recorded four saves versus Missouri State to earn her first career shutout.
Aside from Biggs being named the MVP, Evansville had three other players named to the All-Tournament Team. Allie Arguello, Colleen Dierkes and Emily Richardson were the other representatives on the squad. Another accolade the team received came as Bronwyn Boswell was the recipient of the Elite 18 Award.
On Friday, the Aces will match up against the top seed in the nation - Florida State. The Seminoles earned the seed as they rolled through the season with a 14-2-4 record and earned the ACC Championship with a win over Virginia. The Seminoles took down the Cavaliers by a 7-6 margin in PK’s. Interestingly enough, FSU defeated UVA in the last two ACC Championship matches as well as last year’s National Championship Match. Cheyna Williams was the top scorer this season for Florida State, notching eight goals. Megan Connolly led the way with 10 assists and a total of 22 points. As a team, FSU gave up just 13 goals in 2015, outscoring the opposition by a 49-13 tally.

Men's soccer earns MVC postseason recognition
|
|
Five University of Evansville men’s soccer players earned postseason Missouri Valley Conference accolades on Thursday evening as the league held its postseason tournament banquet.
Mark Anthony Gonzalez was named to the All-Conference First Team as a midfielder while forward Nate Opperman was a member of the Second Team. Another middle – Ian McGrath – earned an Honorable Mention.
Gonzalez established himself as one of the top offensive players in the MVC. He tied for second in the conference with seven goals on the season while finishing third with 16 points in his 16 matches this season. He was also one of the most aggressive shooters in the league, taking 38 shots, 4th-most in the league.
This marks the third MVC First Team honor for the senior, who also earned All-Freshman honors in 2012. He has been one of the top scorers in the league since the beginning of the 2013 season.
Opperman earned a second-team honor as he recorded seven points in 2015. That came via three goals and an assist. Of his 23 total shots, 12 were on goal. His .522 SOG% was one of the best on the UE squad. The senior played in all 16 contests and notched a pair of game-winning goals for the Aces. This is his second conference accolade as he was named to the MVC All-Freshman Team in 2012.
Sophomore Ian McGrath was also honored by the league, earning an Honorable Mention. McGrath finished in a tie for second on the squad with seven total points. He also wrapped up the season all alone in second with 37 shots. A member of the MVC All-Freshman Team last season, McGrath recorded two goals and three assists in his second season at UE and played in 15 matches.
Two Aces grabbed a spot on the All-Freshman Team as middle Zac Blaydes and defender Trevor Baum were named to the squad. Blaydes tied for second on the Evansville team with seven points. He recorded a goal and five assists. His five assists was the team’s top total. He played in all 16 games in his first collegiate season and took 12 shots.
Baum had the distinction of being the only defender named to the team. Despite playing in only nine matches, Baum’s play on the field saw him earn the recognition.

Volleyball set for final home weekend
|
|
This weekend, the Purple Aces volleyball team will complete its home slate with a pair of conference matches against Indiana State and Illinois State.
Friday evening’s match against the Sycamores is set for a 7 p.m. start while Senior Day on Saturday will begin at 6 p.m. with the festivities beginning shortly before. Prior to the match, the five seniors on the UE squad will be honored – Kim Deprez, Stephanie Cerino, Lorena Marquez, Tathianna Cordero and Gabriela Roman.
The two weekend matches will also mark the first in-house telecasts for “The Valley on ESPN3” as each will be televised live.
With Genesis Miranda out due to injury, Mildrelis Rodriguez paced the offense to the tune of 12 kills against Southern Illinois. It was the first time in her last eight matches that she recorded double figure kills. The last time she did came in the home match against SIU when she notched 14 kills.
With 41 attempts against Missouri State last week, Genesis Miranda set the UE program single-season record with 1,272. It broke the record previous held by Julie Groves, who registered 1,256 attempts in 1998. Miranda is on the cusp of breaking another one of Groves’ marks - her season record for kills. Miranda sits with 444 on the season, just 10 behind Groves mark of 454 from ‘98.
Indiana State comes into the weekend with a 16-15 overall record and are 5-10 in the MVC. They are tied for 7th place in the league with Drake. Bree Spengler has notched 0.33 service aces per frame and ranks third in the conference. She also paces the Sycamore offense with 2.66 kills per set. Carly Winslow ranks tenth in the league, hitting .295 on the year.
Coming into the weekend, Illinois State is solidly in the MVC Tournament with a 10-5 record and stand at 20-8 overall. They are in third place in the conference. Jaelyn Keene is the top hitter in the Valley, standing at .433. Her tally is 0.23 ahead of her nearest competition. With 3.79 kills per set, Ashley Rosch ranks third in the conference. She has posted a total of 398 on the season.
