This Weekend in Music: Opera Scenes and a Guest Jazz Concert
|
|
The Schmidt Opera Series returns to Wheeler Concert Hall tonight and Saturday with Death by Aria. The night will feature scenes and arias from a variety of well-known composers including Mozart, Puccini, and Korngold. From Bellini's tragic The Capulets and the Montagues to Offenbach's comic The Tales of Hoffmann, the evening highlights the role of the aria in opera. All scenes will be presented in their original language with English supertitles.
Performances begin at 7:30 p.m. Tickets will be available at the door or may be picked up in the Department of Music in Room 133, Fine Arts Building, between 8:00 am and 4:30 pm, Tuesday through Friday. Admission is $10 or free for students and employees with UE ID.
One of America’s most outstanding jazz pianists, Bobby Floyd, will appear on the Jazz Guest Artist Concert Series, co-sponsored by the University of Evansville and the Evansville Jazz Society. The concert will be presented in Wheeler Concert Hall on Sunday, November 8 at 4:00 p.m.
Bobby’s list of credits reads like a Who’s Who of contemporary jazz. For years, he performed with Ray Charles, has appeared with Sarah Vaughn, Dionne Warwick, Doc Severinson, and many others, and more recently is the featured piano soloist with the Count Basie Orchestra. Bobby's recordings and live performances demonstrate his ability to electrify audiences and have received the highest praise from critics and musicians alike. Whether collaborating with the most outstanding jazz performers in the world, leading his own groups, or performing with symphony orchestras, Bobby engages his listeners with his magnetic personality and outstanding performances.
In addition to Bobby Floyd on piano, the performers will be Derek DiCenzo, bass; and Reggie Jackson, drums.
Admission to the concert is $15.00 for adults, $10.00 for Evansville Jazz Society members and $5.00 for students with I.D. Tickets can be obtained at the door or by contacting the UE Department of Music at 488-2754.

Azarian Published an English Account of a Fifteenth Century Lost Mathematics Treatise
|
|
Mohammad K. Azarian, professor of mathematics, published an English account of the treatise Risala al-watar wa'l jaib ("The Treatise on the Chord and Sine") in Forum Geometricorum. The most essential part of this treatise is about the calculation of sine and chord of one-third of an angle with known sine and chord. This treatise is one of the most significant mathematical achievements of the Persian mathematician and astronomer Ghiyath al-Din Jamshid Mas'ud al-Kashi (known as Jamshid Kashani). The original Arabic manuscript which was completed between 1424 and 1427 is lost. However, several of Kashani's colleagues have written commentaries in Persian as well as Arabic regarding this treatise. Azarian's account is based on the commentaries by the Persian astronomer and mathematician Nizam al-Din `Abd al-`Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Husain al-Birjandi, who was Kashani's student and colleague. Mathematics historians believe that Kashani's algorithm was the most fascinating and creative method of approximation and it was the most significant achievement in medieval algebra.

Aces volleyball heads to Carbondale to face SIU
|
|
Prior to its final home stand of the season, the Aces head to Southern Illinois for a match on Saturday at 7 p.m. Evansville is looking to halt a streak that has seen the squad fall in 13 of its last 15 matches. Just five more matches remain in the season, including home matches next week versus Illinois State and Indiana State.
Genesis Miranda continued to rack up the kills with a total of 52 in three matches last week. She has notched 20 or more in five MVC matches this season while accomplishing the feat just once last season. She has also registered 15 or more in seven league outings.
Making a big impact in last Saturday’s 4-set match at Loyola was senior Gabriela Roman. In her first season with the Purple Aces, Roman set her career mark with 10 kills against the Ramblers. Those kills came in 27 attempts against just three errors as she hit .259.
While Kim Deprez continues to lead the Aces in digs, freshman Mildrelis Rodriguez has done a great job in racking up her fair share of digs. She stands with an average of 3.34 per set this season, just outside the top ten in the league. She has recorded 12 or more in each of the last six matches. Deprez has recorded 517 digs this season, 9th-most in a season for UE. Julie Walroth set the program’s all-time mark for a season with 656 in 2007.
With 41 attempts against Missouri State earlier in the week, Genesis Miranda set the UE program single-season record with 1,272. It breaks the record previous held by Julie Groves, who registered 1,256 attempts in 1998. Miranda is on the cusp of breaking another one of Groves’ marks - her season record for kills. Miranda sits with 444 on the season, just 10 behind Groves mark of 454 from ‘98.
Standing second in the Missouri Valley Conference is Southern Illinois as they have an impressive 10-3 league mark and are 19-7 overall. Andrea Estrada ranks fourth in the conference with 3.43 kills per set while Taylor Pippen ranks as one of the most accurate hitters in the league. Her .392 hitting has her in third place in the MVC. Pippen’s efforts have the Salukis sitting atop the conference, hitting .259 as a team. Defensively, SIU has also been stellar, notching 2.50 blocks per set, tops in the league.

Five UE Women's Soccer Players Receive MVC All-Conference Honors
|
|
Five University of Evansville women’s soccer players received postseason honors from the Missouri Valley Conference on Thursday evening.
Juniors Bronwyn Boswell and Emily Richardson were selected First Team All-Conference as senior midfielder Allie Arguello was recognized on the Second Team. Freshman forward Sara Osinski and senior defender Abby Springer both received honorable mention. Osinski was also named to the MVC All-Freshman team as well.
“It is always nice for the other coaches to recognize our players' hard work and talent,” said Evansville head women’s soccer coach Krista McKendree. “These young ladies have been instrumental to the team. At the end of the day, our whole team has to perform for individuals to get recognition, so these honors directly correlate to the work of the whole group as well as their individual performances.”
Boswell started all 17 matches this season for UE, leading the Purple Aces with three goals and eight points. The midfielder from Frisco, Texas scored two goals, including the game-winner, against IUPUI (Sept. 13) and also recorded two assists as well. This is her second consecutive season being recognized First Team All-MVC.
Richardson also made 17 starts on the back line for Evansville. The defender from Elizabethtown, Ky. played a pivotal role in UE posting four shutouts this season. She also guided the Aces in yielding one goal or less in 10 matches this fall.
Arguello appeared in 15 matches, making 14 starts, for UE. The Las Vegas, Nev. native led the team in assists (three), while also finishing second in goals (two) and points (seven). She also netted the lone penalty kick for UE, a game-winner, in the 1-0 victory over Missouri State (Oct. 29).
Osinski made an immediate impact for Evansville, scoring a goal in her first collegiate match against Xavier (Aug. 21). The Noblesville, Indiana byproduct also tallied goals against Miami (Ohio) (Aug. 30) and an equalizer at Illinois State (Oct. 25).
Springer started all 17 matches this season for UE and played all 1576 minutes this season on the back line. Like Richardson, the Indianapolis, Ind. native helped the Aces yield just one goal during the team’s current three game MVC winning streak, earning Evansville the #2 seed in the MVC Tournament. Springer was also recognized as the MVC Freshman of the Year, All-MVC First Team and All-Freshman team in 2012.
Evansville will host the MVC Tournament (Nov. 6-8) at Arad McCutchan Stadium. The Aces will play #6 UNI in the MVC Semifinals on Friday, Nov. 6 at 6:06 p.m.
“We still have more soccer to play,” added McKendree, “and we are looking forward to trying to reach our team potential this weekend.”
