From the President

* Regarding the Acceptance of the QI by HLC

In 2012, the University of Evansville (UE) submitted to the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) our Quality Initiative Proposal (QIP) to further our strategic goals of increased internationalization and greater social responsibility.  As part of the Open Pathways accreditation process the HLC reviews the effort and progress toward the QIP goals.

The QIP had five main goals: to explore and expand partnerships in East Asia; to build reciprocal student exchanges in the Middle East and North Africa region; to increase the number and diversity of international students on campus and to improve the intercultural experience of both the international and domestic students; to expand the variety of short-term study abroad experiences and their social impact; and, to strengthen our global citizenship focus in coursework and co-curricular activities at Harlaxton College.

In August, UE submitted our Quality Initiative (QI) Report to the HLC, and we are proud to announce that the outstanding efforts of so many were recognized by a favorable review by the HLC.  The HLC reviewers noted that the implementation of the QI has been an institution-wide collaborative effort with an emphasis on continuous improvement and innovative approaches to produce an ongoing effort that supports our Strategic Plan.   The best summary of the HLC assessment is the final part of the last line of the HLC review that states “the QIP was significant in scope and impact and supports UE in its role as a leader in international education.”

The QI Report submitted to the HLC and the summary review report from the HLC are available for viewing at: https://acelink.evansville.edu/Areas/HLC/QualityInitiative.cfm.

My thanks go out to all those who have worked so diligently to design and implement the Quality Initiative, effecting real, lasting, and positive changes in how UE carries out its mission of developing responsible global citizens.

The campus community is invited to An Evening with Daymond John tonight at 7:00 p.m. at the Victory Theatre in downtown Evansville. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. for this free public event and seating is first-come, first-served.

The University of Evansville has partnered with Junior Achievement of Southwest Indiana to make this opportunity possible for our students and the community. The event will serve as both the culmination of JA’s 50th anniversary celebrations as well as this year’s special event for UE’s annual Patricia H. Snyder Concert and Lecture Series which brings renowned speakers to Evansville at no cost to the public.

About Daymond John
Over the last 20 years, John has evolved from one of the most successful fashion icons of his generation to a highly sought after branding expert, author, consultant, and speaker. John’s creative vision and strong knowledge of the marketplace created FUBU (For Us By Us), one of the most iconic fashion icons in recent years. In 2009, John joined the cast of the ABC entrepreneurial business show, Shark Tank, and has since become a household name. On the show, John and four other prominent executives listen to business pitches from everyday people hoping to launch their company or product to new heights.

About the Patricia Snyder Lecture Series
Made possible through an endowment from the late Patricia H. Snyder, trustee and longtime friend of the University of Evansville, the Patricia H. Snyder Concert & Lecture Series was created in 1997 to bring speakers or performers of national or international renown to Evansville at no cost to the public. The concerts and lectures in this series span a wide variety of topics, and are aimed at both the Evansville and campus communities. Events are free and open to the public.

* New Art Exhibit in the Melvin Peterson Gallery

These events are part of the Emerging Contemporary Artist Lecture Series sponsored by the Efroymson Family Fund and the UE Department of Art.

Baxter lives in London, England, where she is an illustrator for newspapers, magazines and book publishing companies including The Times, The Daily Telegraph, The Royal Mail, Vogue, Kingfisher Books, and Good Housekeeping Magazine. She has created private commissions for The Prince of Wales, many American schools, hospitals and universities, and the 2015 Wimbleton. Her interest in “looking at the world from above” began as a young child, and continued after studying at Bath Academy of Art. Her fascination with aerial views inspired her “jewel-like” pictorial maps of architectural vistas of cities, towns and villages all over the world.

“The challenge of creating maps still gives me a thrill and a joy,” says Baxter. “In some ways it fulfills a deep psychological need of knowing where I’m going. I like a beginning and I like a destination.”

The Melvin Peterson Gallery, located at the corner of Weinbach and Lincoln Avenues, is open Mondays, Tuesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from noon - 3 p.m., and Wednesdays and Thursdays from noon - 6 p.m.

For more information on Baxter’s work, go to http://www.katherinebaxter.com/about/

Info You Should Know

* Higher Learning Commission Campus Visit: February 29 – March 2

The University of Evansville will host a visit February 29 - March 2, 2016, with a team representing its regional accrediting agency, the Higher Learning Commission (HLC).

The team will review the institution’s ongoing ability to meet the commission’s Criteria for Accreditation, standards of quality that institutions are expected to address. The Criteria emerge out of a set of guiding values that are grounded in shared tenets of the academic community.

Because the standards against which UE will be evaluated are common expectations at colleges and universities, looking at our policies, practices and outcomes will be more than just an exercise in accountability. It will be an opportunity for us to respond to those things that matter both to us at UE and to the larger higher education community.
