Office Staff Association to Host Old North Fair Trade Market
|
|
The University of Evansville Office Staff Association will again host the Old North Fair Trade Market on campus this year. The Fair Trade Market is a global mission of Old North United Methodist Church, and they celebrate Fair Trade Month in October each year. Part of the celebration is giving back to the community by donating 25% of pre-tax sales to organizations in the Evansville area who support Fair Trade by shopping at the Fair Trade Market. Because the Office Staff Association fundraising goes to student scholarships at UE, all campus sales that day will qualify for the 25% donation to the UE OSA.
The Fair Trade Market will be set up in the ground floor atrium of the Schroeder School of Business Building from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 14.
Be sure to encourage all your co-workers to stop by to look at the large selection of wonderful and unique items from all over the world. Purchases made that day not only further the cause of Fair Trade around the world, but helps our own UE students through OSA scholarships. Please note that the Old North Fair Trade Market accepts cash or personal checks only.

Salukis top UE volleyball in exciting finish
|
|
In her return to the lineup, Mildrelis Rodriguez posted 14 kills, but Southern Illinois had five players with double digit kills to down the Purple Aces volleyball team by a 3-1 final on Saturday evening at the Carson Center.
Genesis Miranda led the University of Evansville (7-13, 1-5 MVC) with 20 kills while Rodriguez had 14 and Stephanie Ceirno notched 12. The Aces finished the night hitting .248 while Southern Illinois (13-6, 4-2 MVC) hit .344 in the win. Leading SIU was Andrea Estrada, who notched 15 kills. Abby Barrow finished with 13.
Lorena Marquez tallied 45 assists for UE, a game-high while Kim Deprez led everyone with 19 digs.
Southern Illinois hit .359 in the first set on their way to a 25-19 win. After taking a 3-0 lead, the Salukis went up by as many as five points at 19-14 before the Aces rallied, getting within three at 21-18. An Abby Barrow kill clinched the frame. Stephanie Cerino was the leader in the set for the Aces, registering five kills.
In the second game, Evansville rebounded, hitting .519 on its way to a 25-15 win. SIU hit just .250. Mildrelis Rodriguez was UE’s top scorer with six kills as Genesis Miranda notched five. The Aces took a 3-1 lead before SIU rallied back to take a 9-8 edge on an Andrea Estrada tally. From there, Lorena Marquez served as the Aces scored the next six and would pull away for the win.
The Salukis scooted out to a quick 6-1 lead in the third set and were able to pull away for the 25-13 win. Two SIU players registered five kills in the set as the Salukis hit .429 to take the win.
Evansville got off to the quick start in the fourth game. With the score tied at 3-3, UE reeled off three in a row as Miranda posted a pair of kills. That lead would later extend to 10-5 on another Miranda kill. After SIU got within three, the Aces were able to re-extend the lead to six at 18-12 on a Miranda ace. That is when Southern Illinois roared back. Down 20-16, SIU reeled off the next five to take a 21-20 lead.
Rodriguez put an end to that with a kill and Miranda notched another point on the ensuing possession to put the lead back in UE’s hands at 22-21. Evansville would go on to take a 24-23 lead, but in an exciting finish, the Salukis were able to rally back to clinch the match with a 29-27 win.
Next weekend, UE is on the road for conference contests at Illinois State and Indiana State.

UE Women's Soccer Drops Senior Night Match to Drake
|
|
The University of Evansville women's soccer team (2-9-2, 0-2-1 Missouri Valley Conference) was defeated 2-1 at home by Drake University (6-8, 3-0 MVC) on Saturday evening.
"Frustrating result tonight," said Evansville head women's soccer coach Krista McKendree. “Credit to Drake as I thought they were good tonight but I also feel we created enough in the second half to have an opportunity to get a result."
The match stayed scoreless until Bulldogs junior midfielder Rebecca Rodgers netted the go-ahead goal in the 37th minute.
Just 18 seconds later, UE was able to tie the match on an own goal from Drake.
Even at one, Evansville nearly went ahead in the 59th minute but a 25 yard blast from junior midfielder Bronwyn Boswell clanged off the crossbar.
The Bulldogs then took the advantage eight minutes later. After Evansville committed a handball, Rodgers took a 67th minute free kick from 20 yards out, bent it around the wall and into the far corner of the net.
Trailing 2-1, Evansville amassed six shots during the remainder of regulation but each attempt was saved by Drake junior goalkeeper Brooke Dennis.
The loss brings UE’s winless stretch to five consecutive matches.
Before the match began, Evansville honored their six seniors (midfielder Allie Arguello, goalkeeper Simone Busby, midfielder Caitie Dierkes, forward Holyn Marshall, forward Kayla Smith and defender Abby Springer) in a pregame ceremony.
Boswell, sophomore defender Olivia Shafer and Smith each had a team-high three shots.
The Aces are on the road for their next three matches at Indiana State (Oct. 14), at Cincinnati (Oct. 18) and at Illinois State (Oct. 25). UE returns home to host Missouri State on Oct. 29.

Sciarra Nets First Goal of the Season In Aces' Loss
|
|
The University of Evansville men’s soccer team (2-9, 0-3 Missouri Valley Conference) was defeated 5-1 at home by Bradley University (5-7, 2-0 MVC) on Saturday afternoon. Junior forward Tyrus Sciarra scored his first goal of the season in the contest.
“Today’s performance was not up to the standard expected of this program,” said Evansville head men’s soccer coach Marshall Ray, “and every member of our team, including our staff, has to be honest with themselves when accessing the match today. We were second best on the day to a Bradley team who were efficient with their attack and deliberate in their game plan. They were fully committed and got their just reward.”
Bradley went ahead early with goals in the fourth and sixth minutes from senior forward Grant Bell.
Down 2-0, UE answered back with Sciarra’s goal in the 32nd minute. Senior forward Mark Anthony Gonzalez made a centering pass to Sciarra who scored on a blast from 15 yards out.
Ahead by one, Bradley extended the deficit with three, second half goals, including two from sophomore forward Richard Olson.
The loss was the sixth straight defeat for UE.
Sciarra’s score was just his second career goal. Gonzalez’ assist was his second helper this season. Sophomore midfielder Ian McGrath led UE with a match-high six shots.
“We have a week to evaluate ourselves and prepare to go on the road and get a needed result at SIUE,” added Ray.
The Aces are on the road for their next two matches at SIUE (Oct. 17) and at Lipscomb (Oct. 20). Evansville returns home to host Missouri State and Indiana Youth Soccer Night on Oct. 24.
