The University will be conducting forums on September 8 and September 9 to provide enrollment and fiscal updates to the campus community.  The forums will be conducted by Jeff Wolf, Vice President for Fiscal Affairs and Administration, and Shane Davidson, Vice President for Enrollment Management.  The sessions will be held in Eykamp Hall, Room 251 of the Ridgway University Center.  The first session will be from 10:00-11:15 a.m. on September 8.  For those unable to attend that session, a second session will be held from 3:00-4:15 p.m. on September 9.  We encourage all faculty, staff and administrators to attend if possible.

One Book One Community of Southwestern Indiana invites the UE community (students, faculty, and staff) to attend the panel discussion entitled “Prison and Beyond: On Women's Incarceration and Rehabilitation” on Wednesday, September 9 at 7:00 p.m. in the Vectren Auditorium at Ivy Tech Community College. Attendance is free and refreshments will be served.

This panel discussion is inspired by this year’s One Book One Community book selection, Orange is the New Black by Piper Kerman.

Students, please consider participating in the UExplore undergraduate research program this semester. The deadline for the Fall Semester student-generated proposals is Thursday, September 10, 2015. Ten copies of your proposal are due in the Office of Academic Affairs before the end of the business day of the proposal deadline. Information about the UExplore program and the proposal template can be found from the UExplore website (http://undergraduateresearch.evansville.edu). You can request up to $1000 for hardware and services to support your proposed research project. Proposals from nearly every department on campus have been funded. 

First year students will be receiving the Interfaith Diversity Experiences & Attitudes Longitudinal Survey (IDEALS) in a few shorts days! Thank you for being willing to participate in this important research! Students who take the survey will be provided $5.00 in cash!!

IDEALS is a national survey that will be used to identify high-impact practices associated with positive interaction across religious and spiritual diversity. According to Interfaith Youth Core, UE will be able to leverage these high-impact practices to create a healthy campus environment, introduce effective programming/experiences, and learn more about the religious climate on campus. This study is the first of its kind. Previous studies have provided a foundational understanding of interfaith interaction, but few tools fully explore the ways in which we can leverage campus experiences to promote effective interfaith work. IDEALS is designed as a longitudinal study that explores the way in which the UE campus can better understand what programmatic experiences are effective and helpful for students.

Students who receive financial aid from the state of Indiana must earn a minimum number of credit-hours each year to renew grants from the state of Indiana. Students who don’t earn these hours become INELIGIBLE for the 21st Century Scholar Award at all Indiana colleges. 

21st Century Scholars Award and maximum value of Freedom of Choice Award (FOC):
• 30 credit hours at the end of first year
• 60 credit hours by the end of second year
• 90 credit hours by the end of their third year

Students who don’t earn the hours above might be eligible for the Frank O’Bannon Freedom of Choice Award of a lower value. Students must also meet the state’s EFC eligibility criteria and file the FAFSA by March 10. The minimum credits required to receive any funds from the program are:
• 24 credit hours by the end of first year of college
• 48 credit hours by the end of second year
• 72 credit hours by the end of their third year

CORRECTING DEFICIENCIES: Students may take courses during Winter Intersession or the summer (at their own expense) to make up credit hour deficiencies to regain or increase state aid eligibility before fall. Dual credits from high school may also be counted.

Becky Ziliak, director of the Health Center, proudly announces the birth of her grandchild. Riley Elizabeth was born on August 31 in Naperville, Illinois. Her parents are UE alumni Joshua and Ellen (Miles) Ziliak. Riley is welcomed home by her siblings, Austin and Claire. 

For the second time in just four matches, sophomore Genesis Miranda reset her career kills mark as the University of Evansville volleyball team earned a 3-2 victory at Austin Peay on Tuesday night.

Miranda led all players with 25 kills while freshmen Mildrelis Rodriguez and Rocio Fortuny checked in with 12 and 11, respectively. With the victory, the Purple Aces improve to 3-1 and are off to their best start since 2011. Leading the Governors was Ashley Slay, who posted 18 kills. Samantha Strother was just behind her with 15.

“This was an outstanding effort by the girls and most of all – composure under pressure,” head coach Manolo Concepcion said. “We were able to take away the momentum from our opponent in key moments of the game. Our mission is to continue to improve out habits, both offensively and defensively.”

The Aces got off to a nice start in the first set, taking a 25-21 win. Austin Peay played well in the early-going, leading by two on several occasions, including 13-11. That is when Evansville made its run, scoring six of the next seven points to open up a 17-14 lead. Freshman Rocio Fortuny notched two kills in the rally.

A service ace by Genesis Miranda helped UE take its largest lead at 22-17, but the Governors had one more run left in them as a Kelly Ferguson kill got APSU within a pair at 23-21. Fortunately, the Aces were able to regroup and score the final two and grab the win. Miranda had a stellar game in the second set, totaling seven kills, but Austin Peay was able to knot the match up at 1-1 thanks to a 25-17 win.

The competitive evening of action continued as Evansville saw the lead go back in its favor with a 25-23 win in the third frame. It was Evansville’s most dominant set of the night as a Miranda tally gave UE its largest lead at 15-8. At that point, Austin Peay fought back with four points and
continued to fight, getting within one at 24-23. Senior Gabriela Roman put an end to that, sending home a kill to clinch the set.

Austin Peay knotted the match up at 2-2 thanks to a 25-18 win in the fourth, leading to a decisive fifth game. A quick 4-1 start by the Governors led to a 12-9 score. With the match in the balance, UE called a time out. It proved to be the difference maker as the Aces went on a 7-2 run to earn their third win of the season. Fortuny notched two kills in the last run while Miranda hammered home the winner with her 25th kill of the evening.

With an exciting mid-week victory in the books, UE now sets its sights on the DePaul Invitational. The Aces open up versus Eastern Illinois on Friday before facing DePaul and Toledo on Saturday.
