Lot B (Oval) and Lot O (Armory) will be closed for painting of lines and curbs. Both are expected to re-open no later than the next day.
Lot C (Koch) will be closed for patching, sealing and striping and is anticipated to re-open Wednesday, August 19.

The University of Evansville Fall Conference is set for Tuesday, August 18. Everyone is invited to a cookie reception, held in the Matt Williams Lobby in Shanklin Theatre at 12:30 p.m. President Kazee will address the entire campus and welcome new employees at 1:30 p.m. in Shanklin Theatre. The Fall Conference will continue with the presentation of awards and the Keynote Address by Dr. Julia Williams. The Family Picnic completes the day starting at 4:30 p.m.

Concurrent sessions are scheduled for Wednesday, August 19, for faculty and administrators in the Schroeder Family School of Business Building. Please note that the starting time has been changed to 8:00 a.m. for the Concurrent Sessions.

The 2015-2016 parking permits are now available for purchase in the Office of Safety and Security. (Current permits expire on the 15th of August) They will be sold between 8 a.m.–4 p.m., Monday through Friday. The price remains $50 for the academic year. Employees will once more be able to use payroll deduction to pay for their permits.

The submission deadline for the next round of proposals has been extended to September 30. Application material can be found in AceLink by clicking “Areas” and then “Programs Task Force.”

Clark Kimberling, professor of mathematics, led a session at the Annual Conference of The Hymn Society in the United States and Canada, held in New Orleans, July 12-16. Entitled "Rediscovering American Hymns, Based on Research for the Canterbury Dictionary of Hymnology," the session focused on group-singing of lost hymn-tunes, including the earliest printed in America (in 1723), as well as hymns associated with New Orleans and a newly found tune by the composer of "America the Beautiful." The rediscovered hymns are among several mentioned in Dr. Kimberling's recent articles in the Canterbury Dictionary of Hymnology, http://www.hymnology.co.uk/.

Condolences are extended to Becky Ziliak, director of the Health and Wellness Center, on the recent death of her mother, Amelia "Dolly" Butler.  Ms. Butler of Wadesville, Indiana, passed away on Saturday, August 8.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m., Wednesday, August 12, at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Poseyville, Indiana, with burial in the church cemetery. Officiating will be Father Ed Schnur. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, August 11, at Werry Funeral Home in Poseyville, Indiana, with a Rosary/Memorial service at 3 p.m.

In the first exhibition match of the preseason, the University of Evansville (1-0-0) rallied from an early deficit to score twice in the final 15 minutes for a 2-1 victory against Eastern Illinois (0-1-0) on Tuesday night.

Trailing by a goal, UE scored in the 75th and 80th minutes to claim their first preseason win in as many chances.
The teams played three, 30 minute periods at Arad McCutchan Stadium.

EIU went ahead in the opening period. In the 11th minute, a redirected ball in the 18 yard box led to an own goal for Evansville.

Down 1-0, the Purple Aces evened up the score in the 75th minute when freshman midfielder Molly Lear sent a cross from the far corner into the near side of the net.

Tied at one, Evansville then took the lead three minutes later when senior defender Abby Springer scored from the near side of the 18 yard box.

Behind 2-1, EIU had one last chance in the 86th minute but Kaci Schonert’s direct free kick attempt from the far side of the 18 yard box was saved by a leaping Simone Busby, the senior goalkeeper for Evansville.

Evansville did not yield a goal over the final 79 minutes to secure the win.

The Aces outshot the Panthers 22-1 in the match. Lear led UE with a total of four shots.

Evansville is back in action on Saturday, August 15 at Austin Peay. The match is set to begin at 7:00 p.m. CDT in Clarksville, Tenn.

University of Evansville head swimming and diving coach Rickey Perkins has announced that 18 student-athletes have signed the appropriate NCAA documents to begin competition at UE in the fall of 2015.

“I am very thrilled about this group of incoming freshman and transfers. I believe very strongly they will have an immediate impact on our program,” Perkins said. “They are a young and talented group that will increase our depth, speed and training in the breaststroke, middle distance freestyle events along with our diving events. It is an exciting time in the history of UE swimming and diving.”

Below is a full list and information on each signee:

Kayla Aitken – San Antonio, Texas – Winston Churchill
Aitken swam for four years at Winston Churchill, swimming sectionals in each season. She also qualified for the Texas Finals. Her collegiate career began at North Texas following her high school graduation in 2013. Two of her top three performances have come with the breaststroke. In the 100, she swam a 1:07.46 while the 200 saw her finish with a time of 2:27.67.

Kelcie Davie – Columbus, Ind. – Columbus North
Davie swam at Columbus North for each of her four seasons. The 2014 Sectional Champion in the 500 Free helped her team to both the conference and sectional championships in 2014 and 2015. Her top performance in the 500 free was a 5:14.86 as a senior at the State meet.

Adrianne Gamester – Peru, Ind. – Northwestern
Gamester had a great career at Northwestern where she led her team to the MIC Conference Team Championship in 2012, 2013 and 2015. In her first two years of competition, she was the MIC Individual Champion in the 100 backstroke. She holds numerous school records including: 200 free relay, 200 medley relay and the 400 free relay. A top 8 finisher in the high school sectionals, Gamester was the team captain in her final season of high school.

Kaylee Gubricky – Hobart, Ind. – Hobart
Gubricky had a stellar high school career that saw her swim while running in track and cross country. She was a great competitor in the pool and in the classroom. Finishing with a 4.31 GPA, Gubricky was an NISCA Academic All-American from 2012 through 2014. She was also her team MVP in each of her four seasons. One of her top meets was at 2015 sectionals as she was an All-NCC Honorable Mention while being a finalist in the 100 breaststroke and 50 free.

Madison Jones – Pittsboro, Ind. – Tri-West
Jones comes to UE after a 4-year swimming career at Tri-West where she holds the school records in the 100 fly, the 100, 200 and 500 free races and the 200 IM. A 4-time All-Conference selection, she stepped up her efforts in conference action, earning Female Swimmer of the Meet on three occasions. Jones’ top events are the 100 fly and 200 free.

Sylvia McFadden – Lafayette, Ind. – William Henry Harrison
The 2015 MVP of her high school team, McFadden had the best season of her career in 2014-15, scoring the most points of her career. Her top efforts came in the CW Indiana Divisional Championship and the Indiana Senior Short Course Championship, both of which came in 2015. A 4-time letterwinner, McFadden earned the 2013 Sportsmanship Award.

Kristen Myers – Chattanooga, Tenn. – Girls Preparatory School
Myers comes to UE after a high school career that saw her named an All-American in 2014 and 2015. She was also the recipient of the Sarah Burns Award, which is given out for earning the most points at the state championship. She holds several records at her school and her top event is the 100 fly.

Megan Schremp - Rockford, Mich. – Rockford
Schremp had a stellar high school career that saw her qualify for the Michigan High School Division I State Championship in all four of her years. She was a 4-year letterwinner while garnering All-Conference, All-Area and All-State honors each season. A 2-sport athlete, Schremp also participated in water polo for two years, earning Rockford Sports Boosters “Athlete of the Month” in October of 2012.

Bridget Sheridan – St. Louis, Mo. – Kirkwood
Sheridan was a great swimmer for the duration of her career at Kirkwood, participating and earning a medal at the MHSAA State Championship in all four seasons. Her top performances included a 59.77 in the 100 back and a 2:15.75 in the 200 IM. Her team took fourth at states while going undefeated in the regular season.

Amy Smith – Scarborough, Ontario, Canada – Dunbarton
A native of Canada, Smith has performed well at several levels in her native country, including performances at the national level in her age group. She has recorded multiple top 10 finishes at Provincial Level meets and Eastern Level meets. Her performances have resulted in her receiving the Co-Education Physical Education Award.

Cory Barnes – Canton, Ill. – Canton
Barnes comes to Evansville after spending two years at Lincoln College where he was an NJCAA All-American in both of his collegiate seasons. At the NJCAA National Diving Competition, he took third and fourth in the 1-meter event and was fourth in both years at the 3-meter event. He was also a 2-time Midwest Cup Champion.

Matthew Duke – Kokomo, Ind. – Western
A career that began with three sports in high school saw Duke put his emphasis into swimming in his final high school years to finish with a great career. He put his marks on the Mid-Indiana Conference record book, resetting marks in the 100 fly, 50 free and the 200 and 400 free relays. Duke was the MVP for his swim team as a senior while earning Academic All-Conference and Academic All-American honors in addition to being named Athlete of the Week for Howard County.

Luke Hoffman – Jasper, Ind. – Jasper
Making the short trip from Jasper to Evansville is Luke Hoffman. A 4-year letterwinner as a diver, Hoffman won sectionals as a junior and set the school record, which was held by one of his coaches. His team owns back-to-back conference and sectional championships in his junior and senior campaigns.

Miguel Marcano – Hobart, Ind. – Hobart
Marcano was one of the top divers in school history at Hobart, breaking the pool’s 6 dive record. That record-breaking performance came in December of 2014. A 2-time MVP, Marcano was a regional qualifier in 2014 while taking third place at the IHSAA Laport Sectionals and the NCC Tournament. He was the sectional champion in 2015 while receiving several other accolades in his career.

Keystone Marcy – San Antonio, Texas – Boerne Champion
Marcy was a great swimmer in high school, qualifying for sectionals in each of his four years while also being a regional finalist all four years. His performances were also strong at the state level as he was a 3-time state qualifier and was a finalist all three times. A stellar freestyle swimmer, he swam a 49.22 in the 100 free and a 1:49.57 in the 200. He will be joining his twin brother, Prescott, who is already on the UE squad.

Derek Stauder – Carmel, Ind. – Carmel
The co-captain of his team as a senior, Stauder took 11th place at the IHSAA meet in his sophomore and senior campaigns. His emphasis is on the breaststroke event with his top times being a 57.10 in the 100 and a 2:05.20 in the 200. In 2011, he set the Indiana age group meet record in the 200 breaststroke. He was just 14 years old at the time.

David Stoddard – Pittsburgh, Pa. – Mt. Lebanon
A 4-time high school letterwinner, Stoddard spent the first three years of his high school career at Stoneman Douglas HS (Fla.) before moving to Pittsburgh and swimming at Mt. Lebanon as a senior. Stoddard qualified for the Broward County Championship in each of his three years in Florida. His top effort came as a junior as one of his top finishes came in the 500 free event at the 2014 Broward County Championship. He brought home a top five in the event and also came home in the top 8 of the 100 free race. This year, he finished in 14th in the 200 free at the Western Pa. Interscholastic League Championship.

Jared Sutphin – Huntsville, Ala. – Huntsville
Sutphin was a 4-time letterwinner for his high school squad while spending two seasons as the team captain. He was chosen to participate on the North Alabama High School Championship Team from 2012-14 while earning All-Tennessee Valley honors in 2013 and 2014. His performances helped the Panthers to consecutive state championship in 2012 and 2013 and a fourth place finish last year.

 The women’s tennis team will be holding walk-on tryout for any female student interested in join our Division I varsity tennis team. Any student who wishes to tryout must have a physical PRIOR to trying out. A free physical can be obtained on August 25, at 6:30 pm, at the Carson Center, otherwise physicals may also be performed by your individual health provider at your own cost.

Former University of Evansville great Mick Lyon will be the first-ever women’s soccer coach inducted into the Missouri Valley Conference Athletics Hall of Fame, the league announced on Friday.

Lyon, a native of Lincolnshire, England, coached the Purple Aces women from the inception of the program in 1993 until 2001. He becomes the second women’s soccer selection to be inducted into the MVC Athletics Hall of Fame, joining his former player – Krissy Meek-Engelbrecht.

“I am flabbergasted, it is such an honor to be voted into the Missouri Valley Conference Hall of Fame,” Lyon said. “It was great to see Krissy (Meek-Engelbrecht) get inducted a few years ago and cannot believe that this has happened to me.”

He became the first women’s soccer coach in Evansville history in 1993 and had unprecedented success after the Valley started women’s soccer in 1996. Between 1996 and 2001, he won nine Missouri Valley Conference championships, including four regular-season and five tournament titles. Lyon won at least one regular-season or conference championship in every season he was a part of the Valley.

“When we moved into the Valley, we stormed our way in and established ourselves as the premier program,” Lyon explained. “In our first year, we worked out a few kinks and did great against Creighton in our first conference championship game. I was so proud to be at the University of Evansville and to work with those girls. To do it in the MVC - a top notch conference - was really special.”

In six seasons in the Valley, he led his squads to an overall mark of 82-37-10. In MVC play, his teams went an unbelievable 28-3-3 and never lost more than one conference match in a season. Lyon earned MVC Coach of the Year honors in 1996, 1997 and 2000, and his players earned nine postseason conference awards including four Player of the Year selections.

“Part of coaching is recruiting, my assistants and I worked really hard to get great players and they gelled so well,” he said. “We did a really good job of bringing in those girls and to get them to believe just how special they were. They believed that and took off. We had a total belief that we were special and that is how we marched out every time.”

After his success coaching at Evansville, he went on to become the head coach at Indiana University for 11 seasons (2002-2012). Lyon’s top season with the Hoosiers came in 2007 when they advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament. In his 20 years as a collegiate head coach, Lyon amassed 202 wins, before announcing his retirement in November 2012.

He and his wife, Elizabeth, who both have multiple sclerosis, remain active in raising awareness and support for individual with the disease. Before Lyon’s coaching career at Evansville, he was a Purple Aces’ men’s soccer player from 1985-87, leading UE to the Final Four in 1985. He was a three-time team MVP as a player and being named the 1987 Midwestern Collegiate Conference Player of the Year and a Second Team All-American. Lyon was also an assistant men’s soccer coach under Fred Schmalz before accepting the women’s position.

“I was working for Coach Schmalz as his assistant and enjoyed that tremendously. When the women’s position was announced, my wife said to apply. I did and that first year (1993) was rough, but we survived and we kept it moving. The University of Evansville really supported the program and it enabled me to quickly gain ground on other teams and march our way forward.”

Lyon’s legacy at UE and in the city of Evansville continues to live on in a big way today. Two of his pupils – Krista McKendree and Meek-Engelbrecht – coach the top collegiate soccer programs in the area. McKendree has led a turnaround with the Aces since becoming head coach in 2008. Meek-Engelbrecht has been the head coach at USI for over a decade.

“I am so proud of Krista. She is my All-American and I could not be more proud to have someone like her run the program. I talk with her frequently and support her as much as I can; it is really special to have someone like her in that position,” Lyon said. “The same is the case for Krissy at USI – she is a rock solid coach. It is really rewarding to know that I was instrumental in helping them learn the game and be even better at teaching the game. It puts a smile on my face watching them coach and have success.”

Other representatives of the University of Evansville in the MVC Athletics Hall of Fame include: Meek-Engelbrecht, Fred Schmalz, Jim Byers and Arad McCutchan.
