The University of Evansville Fall Conference is set for Tuesday, August 18. Everyone is invited to a cookie reception, held in the Matt Williams Lobby in Shanklin Theatre at 12:30 p.m. President Kazee will address the entire campus and welcome new employees at 1:30 p.m. in Shanklin Theatre. The Fall Conference will continue with the presentation of awards and the Keynote Address by Dr. Julia Williams. The Family Picnic completes the day starting at 4:30 p.m.

Concurrent sessions are scheduled for Wednesday, August 19, for faculty and administrators in the Schroeder Family School of Business Building. Please note that the starting time has been changed to 8:00 a.m. for the Concurrent Sessions.

The 2015-2016 parking permits are now available for purchase in the Office of Safety and Security. (Current permits expire on the 15th of August) They will be sold between 8 a.m.–4 p.m., Monday through Friday. The price remains $50 for the academic year. Employees will once more be able to use payroll deduction to pay for their permits.

Artwork that was formerly displayed at the Old Stone House in Newburgh, Indiana, will be available for viewing and selection by University faculty, staff and administrators on Tuesday, August 11 from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. in Ridgway University Center, Eykamp 254-255. The framed artwork will be available for selection by employees to be displayed within their work area on campus as the artwork is the property of the University. The selection process will be on a “first come, first served” basis. Items chosen for display in a work area will be coordinated by Administrative Services staff and selected pieces will be delivered at some point after this event. No artwork displayed during this event will be available for personal purchase.

Students, faculty, administrators, and staff who sport the UE State of Indiana license plate in 2015 (new and renewal plates) will receive a $25 discount off the UE parking permit fee for 2015-16. The registration process for the plates is now handled through the state. If you want to purchase or renew a UE plate, visit www.in.gov/bmv/2744.htm. If you already have your 2015 UE plate, bring your State of Indiana vehicle registration to the Office of Safety and Security when you purchase your parking permit for the new academic year. If you have not registered your vehicle yet, you will need to pay the full parking permit fee and then bring your registration to the Office of Safety and Security to get a credit for $25. Please join the Center for Adult Education in welcoming Lindsay Roberts as the new associate director. Lindsay is a Purdue graduate with a B.A. in communications. She has experience in distance learning, adult student recruitment, advising, faculty development, marketing, and event planning. She most recently served as assistant director of the Weekend MBA program for the Krannert Graduate School of Management at Purdue University. Funeral services will be 10 a.m., Wednesday, August 12, at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Poseyville, Indiana, with burial in the church cemetery. Officiating will be Father Ed Schnur. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, August 11, at Werry Funeral Home in Poseyville, Indiana, with a Rosary/Memorial service at 3 p.m.

 The University of Evansville women’s soccer team begins the 2015 preseason schedule when the Purple Aces host the Eastern Illinois Panthers on Tuesday, Aug. 11. The match will begin at 6:00 p.m. CDT at Arad McCutchan Stadium in Evansville, Ind.

There are high hopes this season for Evansville. The program returns 19 letterwinners (nine starters) from last year’s team that finished second in the Missouri Valley Conference and runner-ups in the MVC Tournament.

Some of UE’s key returners include senior goalkeeper Simone Busby (two time MVC Goalkeeper of the Year), and junior midfielder Bronwyn Boswell (team leader in goals, MVC First Team).

Other returning starters include senior midfielder Allie Arguello, junior midfielder Colleen Dierkes, junior defender Emily Richardson, sophomore defender Olivia Schafer, senior forward Kayla Smith and senior defender/midfielder Abby Springer.

Evansville also has seven freshmen additions including defender Morgan Langhammer, midfielder Molly Lear, forward/midfielder Tess Lombard, midfield Paige Niemeier, midfield/forward Jess O’Shaughnessy, forward Sara Osinski and defender/forward Sierra Pagan.

Eastern Illinois finished last season 2-15-2. The Panthers roster has 14 newcomers as EIU looks to contend against in the Ohio Valley Conference.

Jason Cherry (8-29-2) is the second year head coach of the Panthers. Krista McKendree (53-62-17) begins her eighth season leading the Purple Aces.

Evansville is 8-4-2 all-time in regular season matches against Eastern Illinois. UE has lost back to back meetings against the Panthers. The Purple Aces last win over EIU was a 2-0 victory on September 30, 2009.

Former University of Evansville great Mick Lyon will be the first-ever women’s soccer coach inducted into the Missouri Valley Conference Athletics Hall of Fame, the league announced on Friday.

Lyon, a native of Lincolnshire, England, coached the Purple Aces women from the inception of the program in 1993 until 2001. He becomes the second women’s soccer selection to be inducted into the MVC Athletics Hall of Fame, joining his former player – Krissy Meek-Engelbrecht.

“I am flabbergasted, it is such an honor to be voted into the Missouri Valley Conference Hall of Fame,” Lyon said. “It was great to see Krissy (Meek-Engelbrecht) get inducted a few years ago and cannot believe that this has happened to me.”

He became the first women’s soccer coach in Evansville history in 1993 and had unprecedented success after the Valley started women’s soccer in 1996. Between 1996 and 2001, he won nine Missouri Valley Conference championships, including four regular-season and five tournament titles. Lyon won at least one regular-season or conference championship in every season he was a part of the Valley.

“When we moved into the Valley, we stormed our way in and established ourselves as the premier program,” Lyon explained. “In our first year, we worked out a few kinks and did great against Creighton in our first conference championship game. I was so proud to be at the University of Evansville and to work with those girls. To do it in the MVC - a top notch conference - was really special.”

In six seasons in the Valley, he led his squads to an overall mark of 82-37-10. In MVC play, his teams went an unbelievable 28-3-3 and never lost more than one conference match in a season. Lyon earned MVC Coach of the Year honors in 1996, 1997 and 2000, and his players earned nine postseason conference awards including four Player of the Year selections.

“Part of coaching is recruiting, my assistants and I worked really hard to get great players and they gelled so well,” he said. “We did a really good job of bringing in those girls and to get them to believe just how special they were. They believed that and took off. We had a total belief that we were special and that is how we marched out every time.”

After his success coaching at Evansville, he went on to become the head coach at Indiana University for 11 seasons (2002-2012). Lyon’s top season with the Hoosiers came in 2007 when they advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament. In his 20 years as a collegiate head coach, Lyon amassed 202 wins, before announcing his retirement in November 2012.

He and his wife, Elizabeth, who both have multiple sclerosis, remain active in raising awareness and support for individual with the disease. Before Lyon’s coaching career at Evansville, he was a Purple Aces’ men’s soccer player from 1985-87, leading UE to the Final Four in 1985. He was a three-time team MVP as a player and being named the 1987 Midwestern Collegiate Conference Player of the Year and a Second Team All-American. Lyon was also an assistant men’s soccer coach under Fred Schmalz before accepting the women’s position.

“I was working for Coach Schmalz as his assistant and enjoyed that tremendously. When the women’s position was announced, my wife said to apply. I did and that first year (1993) was rough, but we survived and we kept it moving. The University of Evansville really supported the program and it enabled me to quickly gain ground on other teams and march our way forward.”

Lyon’s legacy at UE and in the city of Evansville continues to live on in a big way today. Two of his pupils – Krista McKendree and Meek-Engelbrecht – coach the top collegiate soccer programs in the area. McKendree has led a turnaround with the Aces since becoming head coach in 2008. Meek-Engelbrecht has been the head coach at USI for over a decade.

“I am so proud of Krista. She is my All-American and I could not be more proud to have someone like her run the program. I talk with her frequently and support her as much as I can; it is really special to have someone like her in that position,” Lyon said. “The same is the case for Krissy at USI – she is a rock solid coach. It is really rewarding to know that I was instrumental in helping them learn the game and be even better at teaching the game. It puts a smile on my face watching them coach and have success.”

Other representatives of the University of Evansville in the MVC Athletics Hall of Fame include: Meek-Engelbrecht, Fred Schmalz, Jim Byers and Arad McCutchan.
