Info You Should Know

* Health Tip: Heat and Ozone

The current heat wave is certainly a dangerous event.  Please respect not only the heat, but the presence of harmful chemical in the air such as ozone.

People with lung disease, children, older adults, and anyone who is active outdoors can be affected when ozone levels are unhealthy. Numerous scientific studies have linked ground-level ozone exposure to a variety of problems, including:
• airway irritation, coughing, and pain when taking a deep breath;
• wheezing and breathing difficulties during exercise or outdoor activities;
• inflammation, which is much like a sunburn on the skin;
• aggravation of asthma and increased susceptibility to respiratory illnesses like pneumonia and bronchitis; and,
• permanent lung damage with repeated exposures.

The nurse will be in Ridgway lobby this Thursday, Aug. 4, 9 a.m.–11 a.m.  If you have health care questions or just want to check your blood pressure or blood sugar, please stop by.

* President's Club Parking Decals

Thank you to all of our faculty and staff that are current President’s Club members. We would like to let you know that the parking decals were mailed to you late last week.   If you are not currently a member, and would like to learn more about UE’s premier leadership giving club,  please contact Scott Gilreath at ext. 2429 or sg157@evansville.edu.  President’s Club benefits include the annual unrestricted parking pass, invitation to our annual dinner banquet, and recognition.  Pledges to the annual fund, or to another account of your choosing may be set up on payroll deduction.

* Discounted Parking Vouchers for those with UE Plates

Students, faculty and staff who sport the UE State of Indiana license plate in 2011(new and renewal plates) will receive a $25 discount off of the parking permit fee for 2011-2012.  The registration process for the plates is now handled through the state.  So if you haven’t gotten your UE plate or need to renew, visit http://www.in.gov/bmv/2744.htm.  If you have already gotten your 2011 UE plate, simply bring your State of Indiana vehicle registration with you when you purchase your parking permit in August.  If you haven’t registered your vehicle yet, you will need to pay the full parking permit fee and then bring your registration in to Security to get a credit back for $25.  Questions?  Contact alumni@evansville.edu

Congratulations

* Joseph Tipton

Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering Joseph Tipton gave a seminar to the Fusion Energy Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) titled “Computational Fluid Dynamics for modeling cooling in high heat flux components – W7X and FNSF”. Wendelstein 7-X (W7X) is an experimental fusion reactor (stellorator design) currently under construction at the Max Planck Institute in Germany, and the Fusion Nuclear Science Facility (FNSF) is a proposed fusion test reactor (spherical tokamak design) to be built at ORNL.

"Fusion energy reactors offer an extremely alluring solution to our global energy needs," explains Tipton.  "Before they can be commercially realized, however, many challenges remain for scientists and engineers to overcome.  This summer, I have been using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software to help design and model ways to keep certain reactor structures cool under very high heat loads.  You could think of it as your car radiator on steroids!  This work has been performed through the ORNL Higher Education Research Experiences (HERE) program for faculty."
