* Walayet Khan was an invited speaker at a global forum of Finance & Banking

Walayet A. Khan, professor of finance, was an invited speaker at the 2014 Global Forum for Finance & Banking held in Istanbul, Turkey. The theme of the forum was "Bridging the World of Islamic Finance - Expanding the boundaries of Islamic Finance: Complementing Domestic Growth with International Linkages.” Dr. Khan gave a presentation to delegates from nearly 20 countries on the topic of "Islamic Finance in U.S. in the Context of Global Growth - Fund Investing, Property Financing and Commercial Banking (from Past to Future)." Islamic finance, a subset of socially responsible investing similar to other faith based investing, is the fastest growing financial service sector (20% annually), reaching over $2 trillion in 2013. Islamic financial institutions have been well-received in most parts of the world since its inception nearly 40 years ago. Islamic finance attained an added momentum due to its relative superior performance during the 2008/2009 global financial crisis in which conventional financial institutions took a hit.

* University of Evansville's Study Abroad Program ranked #1 in America

The University of Evansville study abroad program at Harlaxton College, has been ranked number one in America by BestCollegeReviews.org. This ranking is particularly impressive because many of the other institutions listed are quite prestigious and well known. The list includes names like Sarah Lawrence, Dartmouth, Butler University, Boston University, Duke University, and more—and our program is in the number one spot!

Visit the UE Facebook page to read more about the award and to view positive comments from parents and alumni of Harlaxton about the program.

International studies is a hallmark at the University of Evansville, with over 60 percent of students studying abroad.  In addition to offering a study abroad curriculum that allows students to graduate in four years, the programs are open to all majors and backgrounds. Moreover, financial aid packages travel along with students – which is not the case at many other universities.

Harlaxton College is a 150-room manor house set in the picturesque English countryside that provides a distinctive backdrop for the top study abroad program in the country. This historic home – which some say is UE’s own “Hogwarts” -- is filled with energetic students and faculty that live together in a unique learning environment. Students can choose to spend an entire semester studying abroad, or may opt for one of the 5-10 week course offerings.

"Harlaxton’s physical location in Britain, paired with a Monday-through-Thursday class schedule, enables students to do extensive travel to nearby European landmarks," says UE President Tom Kazee. "Students often find themselves standing in the very spot they discussed in British Studies class a few days earlier. Many groups travel to London, Paris, Ireland, Spain, and Italy—locations that offer ample opportunities for students to gain a global world view through first-hand experience".

BestCollegeReviews.org chose the top study abroad institutions based on the following criteria:

• The program is open to a limited number of students, 500 or less, providing a more intimate experience while abroad.
• The program is at least a semester long.
• Faculty from the university are involved with the students internationally, either traveling with the students, teaching abroad, or overseeing the program in the country.
• The university has a specific location internationally, students are not simply enrolling at international universities.

* Aces Tape: Baseball Player Jonathan Ramon Talks about the beginning of the UE Baseball Season

Good morning everyone! Jonathan Ramon here, reporting live from the University of Evansville campus. I will be providing a weekly blog starting today, until the end of the season in order to keep you all up to date with our practices and the days leading up to our season!

Before I go in-depth about what we have been doing, I want to thank all our fans and the entire Evansville community who have supported us through the years and were behind us 100% last year in our quest for a Missouri Valley Conference Regular Season Championship! Now that we have a title to defend and also other goals, I’m here to give you an inside look on the 2015 Purple Aces baseball squad.

As we arrived back on campus on January 12th, we flipped the switch and are preparing for the 2015 campaign. We start our season at the University of Arkansas-Little Rock on February 13.

The fall season was a grind! We hit the weights hard and we continued to give 110% on the field everyday during practices and conditioning. We also were able to show the new guys how hungry we all are, as a unit, in order to go above and beyond in the upcoming season.

Once back on campus, we started to get back into the swing of things with individual workouts in the weight room, and team conditioning as well. We continue to prepare for our first official team practice on Friday, January 23.

Our offensive unit and pitching staff have both been putting in the work these past couple weeks in order to go full swing this upcoming weekend.

We are all very excited for the upcoming season! We have a large number of returners, and a lot of new transfers and freshmen that are going to play a huge role in helping us compete this year.

We know that we are going to be faced with adversity, and have ups and downs throughout the season. But we do realize that we have to believe in the process and know that it is not going to be easy. As a unit, we are prepared for the challenge and are looking forward to the first bus ride on February 12th down to Arkansas to begin our journey.

Tune in again next Friday!

The four through nine preseason rankings included Southern Illinois (74), Bradley (54), Drake (49), Missouri State (46), Loyola (29), and Indiana State (27).

* Museum Exhibition Celebrates 50th Anniversary of Undefeated UE Team

From January 25 - April 19 in the Evansville Museum’s Evansville Convention & Visitors Bureau Center of History and Science, Winning Them All: The Evansville Aces 1964-65 will recall the epic season when the Purple Aces went undefeated and claimed the school’s fourth College Division National Championship (today’s Division II). In addition to achieving the national championship (a feat they had also accomplished the prior year), they also defeated several major college teams—including Iowa, Northwestern, and Notre Dame—en route to their perfect season. In an era before ESPN, the Aces were not only an outstanding basketball team; they were one of the major social activities in the City. Over 12,000 fans packed Evansville’s Roberts Municipal Stadium on a regular basis to cheer for their hometown team.

Blessed with talented and dedicated players, the Aces were paced by All-Americans Jerry Sloan and Larry Humes. An NBA player and longtime coach, Sloan is a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Humes was Indiana’s High School Mr. Basketball before coming to the Purple Aces; is the Aces second all-time leading scorer; and is a member of the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame.

The team was led by legendary coach Arad McCutchan. McCutchan compiled a record of 515-313 during his 41 year career; won five national championship, and was elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1981.

The climax of the season was the national championship game against the Southern Illinois University Salukis at Roberts Stadium. In two earlier, contests during the regular season, the Aces defeated the Salukis - that included future hall of famer Walt Frazier - by one point on each occasion. The National Championship was also tightly contested, as Evansville defeated Southern Illinois in overtime by a score of 85-82 to complete the perfect season.

A Conversation with the 1964-1965 Aces

In conjunction with the exhibition at the Evansville Museum, on Saturday, January 24 the public will have the opportunity to hear from the starting five of the undefeated 1964-65 Evansville Aces.
