* UE Emeriti Professor of Engineering William Hartsaw Has Died

Dr. William O. Hartsaw, emeriti professor of mechanical engineering, died Tuesday, November 18, at his home in Evansville. He was 93.

He was preceded in death by his wife Delma. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Elizabeth Hartsaw, and grandsons William David and Nicholas Hartsaw.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Friday, November 21, at Methodist Temple, with burial at Bethel UMC Cemetery south campus in Washington, Indiana. Visitation will be today from 4-7 p.m. at Alexander East Chapel in Evansville, and Thursday from 10 a.m. until service time at the church.

Memorial contributions may be made the Dr. William O. and Delma Hartsaw Engineering Scholarship at the University of Evansville.

Hartsaw joined the faculty of the University of Evansville (then Evansville College) in 1946 as an instructor. In a 2006 interview for UE Magazine, he recalled that he thought he would only stay a few years before going to work in the private sector. But then, he said, something unforeseen happened – he discovered that he loved teaching.

He stayed at UE for 46 years until his retirement in 1992, progressing to professor of engineering and becoming the school’s first dean of engineering. During his tenure at UE, he helped build the department into a four-year program with a co-op option. His success in obtaining the first accreditation of the school’s engineering department by the Engineers’ Council for Professional Development was just one of his many recognized services to the University. In 1985, the University named him “Distinguished Professor” – a tribute bestowed on longtime faculty members who have made outstanding contributions to their professions.

Several of Hartsaw's students, including Dick Blandford, David Mitchell, Paul Funk, Jim Giles and Doug Stamps, went on to become professors at UE. Others went to work in local industries, or in such internationally known companies as Boeing. Several have worked for NASA. His son Mark is also a graduate of UE's mechanical engineering program and took classes with his father.

Hartsaw's own pursuit of higher education was interrupted by World War II, when he joined the U.S. Army Air Corps, After the war, he went back to school, earning his engineering degrees from Purdue University. Later he received his Ph.D. in theoretical and applied mechanics from the University of Illinois.

* University of Evansville Theatre Opens Macbeth, the Scottish Play

The University of Evansville Department of Theatre proudly presents William Shakespeare’s Macbeth, opening Friday, Nov. 14, at 7:30 p.m., in Shanklin Theatre. Additional performances are at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 15, 20, 21, 22, and at 2:00 p.m. on Nov. 16 and 23.

Shakespeare’s darkest tragedy combines supernatural elements with barbaric ambition, in this keen examination of evil. Against the backdrop of the 11th century, the power-hungry Macbeth is tempted by the prophecies of three witches, spurring his overwhelming desire to be the King of Scotland. Along with his frighteningly manipulative wife, this mad desire leads them both into a nightmarish world of evil, deceit, and murder. Monstrous actions run rampant, as he and Lady Macbeth lose themselves to unstoppable urges of savagery and political atrocity.

John David Lutz, professor of theatre and department chair, directs Macbeth. Associate professor Eric Renschler serves as the scenic designer; professor Patti McCrory is the costume designer; assistant professor Stephen Boulmetis is the lighting designer; professor Diane Brewer is the dramaturg; professor Chuck Meacham is the sound designer; guest artist and UE alumnus Diego Villada is the fight choreographer; and Alexis Richards, a senior from Denver, Colo., serves as the associate lighting designer.

The cast features Ben Anderson, a senior from Los Angeles, Calif., in the title role, and Emily Daly, a senior from Milwaukee, Wis., as his conniving wife. The 35-person cast also features Anders Neirheim, a senior from Minnetrista, Minn., as Duncan, and Christopher Hailey, a senior from Friendswood, Texas, as Macduff. The three witches will be played by Olivia Hebert, a senior from Arlington, Texas, Devin Fluker, a junior from Las Vegas, Nev., and Jasmine Maletta, a sophomore from Chesterton, Ind.

Ticket prices are $15 for adults and $13 for senior adults, students and UE faculty and staff. UE students may obtain one free student rush ticket beginning at noon on the day of the performance they wish to attend.

Including Shakespeare’s Macbeth, the rest of the season features Dancing at Lughnasa, by Brian Friel, Feb. 20 through Mar. 1; and A Streetcar Named Desire, by Tennessee Williams, April 17-26. Tickets may be purchased by calling (812) 488–2031, Monday through Friday, noon-5 p.m.

Info You Should Know

* Lane Closures Entering U.S. 41 & Lloyd Work Zone

Lloyd Expressway traffic should watch for temporary lane closures upon entering the U.S. 41 interchange work zone as contractors perform temporary paving.

With the early arrival of winter temperatures, contractor Ragle Inc. is aggressively preparing for an upcoming traffic shift before the deep freeze sets in. Drivers should continue to expect delays and consider alternate routes as occasional lane closures are expected to last through next week.

Temporary traffic pattern
In early December, crews anticipate shifting Lloyd Expressway (S.R. 62/66) traffic south such that two lanes in each direction will share the existing eastbound lanes. Westbound traffic will cross the median using the temporary pavement being installed at each end of the work zone.

During future traffic phases, existing looping ramps from Lloyd Expressway to U.S. 41 also will be closed temporarily for reconstruction. Exiting traffic familiar with merging right will temporarily merge and turn left at a traffic signal.

While temperatures do limit the types of work that can be performed, construction will continue this winter as weather permits. Indiana Department of Transportation contractors will remove old pavement and move dirt for new ramps so they are ready for paving in the spring.

Follow INDOT on social media at http://facebook.com/INDOTVincennesDistrict or http://twitter.com/INDOTSouthwest for construction updates and traffic alerts, or access INDOT’s TrafficWise Traveler Information Service at http://indot.carsprogram.org.

About the U.S. 41 & Lloyd Cloverleaf
Over about one year, Ragle Inc. of Newburgh will reconfigure the U.S. 41 and Lloyd Expressway interchange into a full-cloverleaf design, which will remove two stoplights from the Lloyd Expressway. INDOT and Evansville Mayor Lloyd Winnecke broke ground on the $19.1 million project in October.

Traffic on U.S. 41, Lloyd Expressway and the ramps connecting the two will be maintained with traffic shifts and lane closures. To minimize hazards for workers that are digging and moving dirt, electrical service to overhead lighting has also been deactivated during construction.

In addition, Weinbach Avenue remains closed at Division Street for installation of a storm sewer. Lloyd Expressway entrance and exit ramps at Weinbach Avenue remain open, but traffic is limited on where they can turn.

Athletics

* Aces Lead Wire-to-Wire in Win at Miami

D.J. Balentine posted a game-high 19 points to lead the University of Evansville men’s basketball team to a 69-50 road win over Miami Ohio in the first road game of the season at Millett Hall.

Balentine shot 6-of-17 for UE (2-0) to lead all players. He was followed by Egidijus Mockevicius, who hit 7 of his 8 attempts en route to 17 tallies. He also led all players with 12 rebounds. Rounding out the double figure scorers was Blake Simmons, who knocked down six out of seven shots en route to 12 points.

“Overall, there are a lot of good statistics to take from tonight. We kept them off the foul line and were able to do well in many other parts,” head coach Marty Simmons said. “Egidijus did a great job for us tonight. He had the flu bug earlier in the week, but was able to come in and do so many good things for us tonight.”

Miami (1-1) was led by LJ Livingston, who scored 12 points on a perfect 6-6 day from the field. Geovonie McKnight was just behind him with 11 tallies.

Behind four Egidijus Mockevicius tallies, the Purple Aces hit four of their first five shots on their way to an 8-2 lead. He capped off the rally with a dunk on a great feed from Blake Simmons. Miami began 1-5 from the floor.

The run for Evansville continued as Adam Wing and Mockevicius hit the next two shots, giving the Aces a 6-for-7 start to the game and a 12-5 lead. Miami was solid over the remainder of the half, closing to within a pair at 22-20. Evansville went scoreless over the span of five minutes, missing five shots and turning it over three times.

Despite the rally by the RedHawks, the Aces calmly finished the half on a run to take a 26-20 lead into halftime. Jaylon Moore ended the scoreless stretch with a slam dunk on an assist from Jaylon Brown. Brown was at it again in the closing ticks of the period as he blocked a Will Sullivan 3-point attempt and tossed it up the floor to D.J. Balentine, who found Mockevicius for a layup at the buzzer.

Mockevicius wrapped up the half with a game-high 12 points and 7 rebounds while hitting all six of his shots.

Out of the break, it was Mockevicius doing it once again, scoring on the old-fashioned 3-point play to give the Aces their first double figure lead at 33-22 just over two minutes into the period. Will Sullivan responded with his second trey of the evening on the ensuing possession. His bucket spearheaded a 7-2 run forcing Coach Simmons to call a timeout as the RedHawks cut the lead to 35-29 with 15:45 left in the game.

From that point on, it was all Aces. The lead hit double figures once again as Balentine knocked down his first triple of the night with 12:48 left. The daggers came later as Adam Wing, Brzoja and Balentine hit three treys in a row as UE took a 54-39 lead with under eight minutes remaining.

The Aces were able to hold the lead from there as they cruised to the 69-50 triumph. As a team, UE shot 57.1% on the night while the defense was strong, holding Miami to 39.6%.

Adam Wing kept up his solid start to the season, scoring nine on a 4-5 day. Evansville had 17 assists on 28 makes as Duane Gibson finished with four helpers. Rebounding also went the Aces way by a 33-24 final.

A trip to Florida awaits the Purple Aces next week as they will play in the Gulf Coast Showcase. The action begins on Monday at 2:30 p.m. ET as the Aces take on Fresno State. All three games of the tournament will be played at Germain Arena in Estero, Fla.

* Hart Scores Game-high 26 Points as Aces Lose 76-70 at Ball State

Senior Khristian Hart scored a game-high 26 points off the bench as the University of Evansville women’s basketball team (1-1) lost 76-70 at Ball State on Wednesday night.

Hart’s 26 points are the most for the guard since January 2013 when she tallied a career-high 28 points against Missouri State.

Evansville also received a 19 point game from sophomore guard Sara Dickey and a 13 point, 9 rebound effort from senior forward Mallory Ladd.

UE never led in the contest, falling behind 9-2 in the opening few minutes. The Purple Aces rallied back with a 9-3 run, including seven points from Hart.

Ball State then surged back, increasing the lead back to six points on a Shelbie Justice layup with 8:54 remaining in the first half. Evansville had an answer, though, as the Purple Aces evened the score at 20 with a Peyton Langston jumper at the 6:03 point of the opening half. It was the lone basket for Langston who was 1-for-10 in the contest.

Shortly after UE tied the game, Ladd incurred her second foul and was relegated to the bench with teammate Sasha Robinson, who also had two fouls. Ball State took advantage of the two forwards on the bench by finishing the half on a 17-7 run, building a double digit 37-27 advantage.

Out of the break, Evansville lowered the deficit to four with a 7-0 run over a one minute 44 second stretch. Ladd scored eight points in the first five minutes of the half, bringing UE within a 43-39 measure.

Ball State responded by immediately going on another 7-0 run for a 52-41 lead at the 12:03 mark of the second half.

UE brought the difference back to two points when Dickey made a pair of free throws with 6:42 left in regulation.

Ball State carried the advantage back to six points with 5:02 to go, only to watch as Evansville pulled within two on a Dickey three at the 2:15 point. UE would be unable to get closer than two the rest of the way as the Cardinals finished the game on a 9-5 run.

Evansville will continue their five game road trip on Friday, November 21 at IPFW. The tip is set for 6:00 p.m. at the Hilliard Gates Sports Center.

UE’s next home game will be on Saturday, December 6 against Miami (Ohio) for a 4:00 p.m. tip at the Ford Center. Fans can purchase tickets over the phone at 812-488-ACES (2237), in person at either the Carson Center or Ford Center ticket office, or online via Ticketmaster.com.

* Volleyball Signs Three for Next Season

University of Evansville volleyball coach Manolo Concepcion announced the addition of three players to his roster for next season. Two freshmen along with a transfer will join the squad.

Freshmen Midrelis Rodriguez and Lizzie Giller along with transfer Gabriela Roman.

Rodriguez comes to UE after playing on the U-20 Puerto Rico Volleyball National Team. In high school, she posted four consecutive LAEC Championships and was the MVP of the league in 2014. She was a candidate for the 2014 High School Player of the Year award in Puerto Rico and played in the all-star game.

She also brings experience with current UE player Genesis Miranda as the duo played together on the Junior National Team in very competitive situations.

"We are very excited to have signed Mildrelis, an experienced all-around student-athlete who has the ability to impact the game in multiple areas,” Concepcion said. “She is an extremely athletic outside hitter with the passing range of a Libero. For the second year in a row, we have been able to recruit the #1 senior outside in Puerto Rico. Her outstanding club's background has helped her develop pure fundamentals that will be significant to our ball control immediately."

Lizzie Giller is a 6-1 middle hitter from Indianapolis. She started all four years for Beech Grove High School and for the last three years she has led her team in kills and blocks. She was named to the all Indiana Crossroads Conference team in 2013 and again in 2014.

Additionally she earned team MVP honors and in 2014 named to the Cowan Blackhawk Invitational All-Tournament team. Giller played club volleyball for Team Indiana and plans on majoring in Visual Communication.

“Lizzie provides depth that we need in the Middle position. She is a speedy, aggressive player with a high ceiling,” Concepcion said. “Her raw talent, along with her explosiveness to get out of the ground, are our favorite traits about her. We wanted to find someone in that position that would be able to add quickness, and her athleticism will be developed into that, long term.”

Also joining the team as a senior is Gabriela Roman, who comes to UE from Jacksonville University in Florida. Roman led Jacksonville to win the 2013 A-Sun Conference Championship (first since 2004) with a 30-4 record (best in program’s history). In 2013, she also led the team to their first NCAA appearance. Roman was named the 2012 A-Sun Sand Volleyball Freshman of the Year while making the All-Freshman team in both sand and indoor volleyball.

As a member of the Puerto Rico Volleyball National Team, she traveled to Czech Republic in 2013 to compete in the Indoor Volleyball World U -21 Championship. She also represented Puerto Rico in 2014 at the Beach Volleyball World U -23 Championship taking place in Poland as well as the Beach Volleyball World U-21 Championship at Cyprus.

“Gaby brings winning tradition to our program. She has already been a program-changer at this level. Knows what it takes to achieve the ultimate goal, and look forward to see her inject that process-oriented mentality into our locker room,” Concepcion added. “Her energy and dynamism are characteristics that are contagious. That, combined with her international experience indoor and outdoor, makes her an immediate impact in our future aspirations.”
