What's Happening Today

* University of Evansville Theatre Opens Macbeth, the Scottish Play

The University of Evansville Department of Theatre proudly presents William Shakespeare’s Macbeth, opening Friday, Nov. 14, at 7:30 p.m., in Shanklin Theatre. Additional performances are at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 15, 20, 21, 22, and at 2:00 p.m. on Nov. 16 and 23.

Shakespeare’s darkest tragedy combines supernatural elements with barbaric ambition, in this keen examination of evil. Against the backdrop of the 11th century, the power-hungry Macbeth is tempted by the prophecies of three witches, spurring his overwhelming desire to be the King of Scotland. Along with his frighteningly manipulative wife, this mad desire leads them both into a nightmarish world of evil, deceit, and murder. Monstrous actions run rampant, as he and Lady Macbeth lose themselves to unstoppable urges of savagery and political atrocity.

John David Lutz, professor of theatre and department chair, directs Macbeth. Associate professor Eric Renschler serves as the scenic designer; professor Patti McCrory is the costume designer; assistant professor Stephen Boulmetis is the lighting designer; professor Diane Brewer is the dramaturg; professor Chuck Meacham is the sound designer; guest artist and UE alumnus Diego Villada is the fight choreographer; and Alexis Richards, a senior from Denver, Colo., serves as the associate lighting designer.

The cast features Ben Anderson, a senior from Los Angeles, Calif., in the title role, and Emily Daly, a senior from Milwaukee, Wis., as his conniving wife. The 35-person cast also features Anders Neirheim, a senior from Minnetrista, Minn., as Duncan, and Christopher Hailey, a senior from Friendswood, Texas, as Macduff. The three witches will be played by Olivia Hebert, a senior from Arlington, Texas, Devin Fluker, a junior from Las Vegas, Nev., and Jasmine Maletta, a sophomore from Chesterton, Ind.

Ticket prices are $15 for adults and $13 for senior adults, students and UE faculty and staff. UE students may obtain one free student rush ticket beginning at noon on the day of the performance they wish to attend.

* Six Men's Soccer Players Receive MVC Honors; UE earns MVC Fair Play Award

Six University of Evansville men’s soccer players received honors at the Missouri Valley Conference awards banquet in Peoria, Illinois on Thursday night.

Junior midfielder Mark Anthony Gonzalez, junior midfielder Faik Hajderovic and senior defender Patrick Hodges were all named First Team All-Conference. Senior forward Charlie Macias and senior midfielder Luis Romero were both selected to the All-Conference Second Team. Senior forward Dylan Terry was an honorable mention and forward Ian McGrath was recognized on the All-Freshman Team. Evansville also received the MVC Fair Play Award as well.

Gonzalez led UE with six goals and 15 points this season. He also had three assists on his way to being named to the All-MVC First Team in back to back years.

“"Mark Anthony was the leading goal scorer in the MVC in conference play,” said UE head coach Mike Jacobs. “He came up big for us against conference rivals this season."

Hajderovic had two goals, five assists and a team-best 43 shots this year. He was named to the all-MVC First team in 2013 and was an honorable mention in 2012.

"Faik is as creative a playmaker as there is in the Valley,” said the UE head coach. "He proved it as the season went on."

Hodges was a four year starter for the Aces defense, advancing from the Missouri Valley Conference All-Freshman Team in 2011 to Honorable Mention in 2012, and to the Second Team in 2013.

"Patrick was our defensive stopper and leader of our backline,” added Jacobs. “He consistently handled the other team's top attacking players."

Macias, like Gonzalez, also had six goals this season for UE. He was named Honorable Mention in 2012.

"Charlie was one of the most threatening attacking players in the MVC this season,” said the Aces head coach. “His pace made him someone opposing teams always had to worry about."

Romero had three assists this year for Evansville. He was named honorable mention in 2013 and second team in 2012.

"Luis was a steady presence in our midfield during MVC play,” added Jacobs. “He imposed himself on both sides of the ball."

Terry contributed two goals and four assists this season for UE. He was a Scholar Athlete First Team honoree last year.

"Dylan is a dynamic attacking player,” said Jacobs. “He creates chances for himself and others, and has played a critical role in our attack all season."

McGrath had one goal this season and it was a game winner at Bradley on October 11 in a 2-1 victory.

"Ian's game grew and grew as the season went on,” Jacobs said. “He proved to be an extremely valuable player in a number of roles all over the field."

Evansville also received the MVC Fair Play Award, which is structured after the FIFA Fair Play honor. The award goes to the Valley team that has accumulated the fewest penalty cards during all MVC matches. The Aces had just three penalty card during regular season play this season.

* Volleyball Set for Final Road Trip of 2014

A trip west will wrap up the road slate for the University of Evansville volleyball team as they head to Wichita State and Missouri State.

Friday’s tilt at Wichita State at 5 p.m. begins the trip before UE heads to Springfield, Mo. to take on the Bears at 7 p.m. on Saturday.

As senior Ashley Ring rounds the stretch of her illustrious career at UE, she continues to rack up the kills in what has been the best of her four years in Evansville. She has gone only four matches this season without racking up double figures in kills. She sits at 394 for the season.

Ring’s average of 4.06 per set has moved to the top of the MVC. She has a slight lead of Missouri State’s Lily Johnson (4.02) and Morgan Reardon of Loyola, who checked in with a 4.01 average.

The injury bug has hit the Purple Aces hard this season as five players are currently having to watch from the sidelines as the season winds down. In Saturday’s match versus UNI, freshman hitter Genesis Miranda subbed in at setter for the first time this season. Miranda did a solid job in the new position versus UNI as she tallied 20 assists.

Stephanie Cerino played well in Saturday’s match versus the Panthers. She posted six kills while hitting a team-best .312.

Both of the weekend’s opponents enter play with a 10-4 league mark. The Shockers come in at 16-8 overall after a 3-2 home triumph over MSU last weekend. Despite not having any of the top ten players in kills in the league, the Shockers have spread the wealth, ranking third as a team with 13.40 per set. Abbie Lehman ranks second in the Valley in overall hitting at .374.

Missouri State comes into the weekend with a 17-9 mark after falling at WSU last weekend. Lily Johnson is the top threat for MSU as she ranks second in the league behind Ring with 4.02 kills per set while leading the way in the Valley with 33 service aces. They also have one of the top setters in the conference as Kinsey McCarter ranks second with 11.02 assists per set.

Evansville wraps up the 2014 slate on Friday, November 21 versus Southern Illinois. Set for 7 p.m. in the Carson Center, the match will be the final one at the Carson Center for seniors Meaghan Holmes and Ashley Ring.

* NCAA Great Lakes Regional on Tap for Cross Country

One of the top runners in program history – Josh Genet – will run his final race as the University of Evansville cross country teams travel to Madison, Wisc. on Friday for the NCAA Great Lakes Regional.

Set to take place at the Zimmer Championship Course, the women will run a 6-kilometer race at noon before the men take their turn on the course for a 10-k event at 1 p.m.

The last action for the Purple Aces came on Nov. 1 as the teams ran in the Missouri Valley Conference Championships in Carbondale, Ill. UE's men were led by senior Josh Genet. He finished in 56th out of 69 participants, running a 26:29.25. It was his third-best 8K run of the year. Sophomore Ross Frondorf was close behind, recording a 27:23.08. It was by far his fastest time of 2014. His previous best in 2014 was a 28:03.18 at the Greater Louisville Classic.

Third for the men was Matt Hamilton. His 27:42.55 was his no. 2 time of the year. Rounding out the top five for the Aces were Jon Ashby and Ben Woolems. Ashby finished the 8K race in 29:20.48 while Woolems checked in at 28:47.73. Ben Johnson ran a 30:51.49 and Isaiah Frey came in at 30:59.46 for his top collegiate time.

Evansville's women took ninth in the event with 288 points. Pacing the Purple Aces was junior Laurel Wolfe. She ran an 18:44.09, which was just nine seconds off of her PR. Her time put her in 50th place out of 79 runners.

Next across the stripe was senior Kirsten Perrey. Her effort of 19:02.03 was the second-best time of her career. That followed her top time, which came at the UE Invitational (18:36.5) where she took third. Elizabeth Kingshott continued to improve in her junior campaign. She has improved every race and this one was no different as she posted her best time of the season – a 19:03.06.

Fourth for the women was Alyssa Moran with a 19:34.76. It was her second-best time of 2014. Rounding out the top five for UE was Loren Oboikovitz. She set another PR with a 19:34.89. Five of the top 5K times in her career have come this season. Sophie Etienne was another runner who posted her top career time. She finished the race with a 20:12.30, eclipsing her previous best of 20:27.97, which came earlier this season at Louisville.

* Seven UE Women's Soccer Players Receive MVC All-Conference Honors

Senior Taylor Brand (Defensive Player of the Year) and junior Simone Busby (Goalkeeper of the Year) received two of the top honors at the 2014 Missouri Valley Conference Awards Reception.

The University of Evansville women’s soccer team (11-6-3, 4-3-1) had a total of seven players receive postseason honors, which was very meaningful for head coach Krista McKendree and the Aces.

“As great as I think both Simone and Taylor are, they would not have received those awards without the performances of their teammates,” McKendree said. “It is great to have that many players honored because it means we have had a season worth honoring.”

Evansville had three players named First Team All-Conference including Brand, Busby and sophomore midfielder Bronwyn Boswell. Senior defender Tatiana Pagan was selected to the All-Conference Second Team. Additionally, Evansville forward Nicki Baham, forward Montana Portenier, and defender Olivia Shafer were each honored on the All-Freshman Team.

“I’m happy that seven of our players were recognized for their performance this season,” said McKendree. “It is a testament not only to their ability but also the hard work, ability and execution from the whole team. I think that is one of the best thing about team sports; it truly does take the whole team performing as one unit for individuals to be recognized.”

Brand, Pagan and Shafer piloted Evansville’s defense to a program-record tying 12 shutouts this season, yielding just 10 total goals the entire season.

Busby guided the Aces to a program-best six consecutive shutouts and a streak of over 631 minutes without allowing a goal. Her 0.58 goals against average is 18th best in the nation.

Boswell has a team-high eight goals this season including six game-winners, 7th most in the country. Baham recorded four goals, second most of any Ace this year. Portenier also netted two goals and contributed two assists for UE this year.
