|
|
Player Name: Asia Petitte

Academic Year: Freshman
Hometown: Charleston, W.Va.
10 QUESTIONS WITH ASIA PETITTE
Favorite color: Purple
Favorite meal: TGI Friday’s barbeque chicken flatbread without red onions or peppers
Favorite class: Philosophy Bio-ethics and Biology. I love being challenged in the classroom and both of these classes are definitely challenging.
Most inspirational person in your life: My mother, father, and sister. Everything I do is for them. I hope one day I can provide half of the things for them that they have provided for me.
Favorite basketball figure: LeBron James
Major: Biology but planning to minor in theater also. I want to continue to medical school and proceed into dermatology then become a Moh’s surgeon
Reason you chose UE: Great academics which is a huge thing for me because I’m a nerd . Also, the first class basketball facilities were important to me. It’s hard to find a gym better than ours. Also, it’s only five hours from my family so I know I’ll definitely see them at every home game
Most memorable UE moment: The team’s inside joke that “Mal’s best isn’t Khristian’s best, and Khristian’s best isn’t Mal’s best”. Coach Epps still doesn’t understand why we all laugh when he says “Just do your best”
Most important goal as a student athlete: Win the MVC Championship and also make an NCAA tournament appearance. I am also getting prepared for medical school once I graduate from UE
What does being a Purple Ace mean to you? Being a Purple Ace means a lot to me. At UE, I have the opportunity to go to school for free and get an education so my parents don’t have to worry about paying for college. I also have the opportunity to be a part of an amazing team. I think it’s something special when I can wear a jersey that represents both of my families (Evansville and Petitte).

Dickey Scores Game-High 31 Points in Aces Exhibition Game Loss to USI
|
|
Sophomore guard Sara Dickey led the University of Evansville women’s basketball team with 31 points in a Purple Aces 76-72 exhibition game loss to Southern Indiana on Saturday afternoon.
Junior forward Mallory Ladd amassed another 16 points and gathered six rebounds in the cross-town matchup.
For the third straight season, USI and Evansville met in an exhibition at the Ford Center.
UE held an early 3-0 advantage when Southern Indiana committed a turnover and Dickey hit a three on the opposite end. Unfortunately for Evansville, that would be the last lead for the Purple Aces. USI responded by going on an 11-2 run including eight points from Screaming Eagles forward Anna Hackert, who also totaled 31 points on the afternoon.
USI continued to add on their lead and were ahead 23-11 at the 12:42 mark of the opening half. Down by double digits, Evansville was able to bring the deficit back down to five points on a Mallory Ladd three pointer with 9:01 remaining. USI surged back, however, with back to back layups from Cayla Herbst and Kaydie Grooms making the score 31-22.
UE brought the lead back down to six at halftime when USI held a 38-32 advantage.
Dickey, 16 points, and Ladd 10 points, both reached double figures in the first half.
Evansville stormed back again after halftime by scoring five of the next seven points. A Sara Dickey three with 16:41 on the clock moved Evansville back within three.
USI then went on a 12-0 run to regrow the edge back to 15 points.
The Screaming Eagles lead stayed double digits until UE got another three from Sara Dickey with 4:46 to go, making the score 69-60.
Evansville then proceeded to go on a 10-3 run where a Dickey layup with 1:41 left brought UE within two points.
Leading 72-70, Southern Indiana got a layup and a pair of free throws from Hackert to complete the Screaming Eagles road win.
Evansville shot 40% from the floor, compared to 57% by Southern Indiana.
Freshman guard Kenyia Johnson, senior guard Khristian Hart, sophomore forward Sasha Robinson each totaled six points each in the game for UE.
The Aces regular season opener will against Austin Peay on Sunday, November 16. The tip is set for 1:00 p.m at the Ford Center in Evansville, Indiana. Fans can purchase tickets over the phone at 812-488-ACES (2237), in person at either the Carson Center or Ford Center ticket office, or online via Ticketmaster.com.

MVC Regular Season Championship Evades Evansville with 1-0 OT Loss
|
|
A Missouri State goal in the 94th minute gave the Bears a Missouri Valley Conference Regular Season Championship and a 1-0 overtime win against the visiting University of Evansville men’s soccer team (6-10-1, 4-2-0) on Saturday night.
Following a 93rd minute shot that went high for Emmerich Hoegg, Missouri State was able to gain control of the UE goal kick and set up Hoegg on a pair of passes for the game-winning, conference championship clinching goal. The goal at 93:00 was the sixth for Hoegg this season and took place just 40 seconds after his last shot attempt went over the crossbar.
The loss for Evansville makes the Purple Aces a three seed in the upcoming Missouri Valley Conference Tournament. UE will play the sixth seeded and tournament host Bradley Braves in the quarterfinals on Wednesday, November 12 at 6:00 p.m.
The first half featured Missouri State outshooting Evansville 5-1 but neither team was able to score the go-ahead goal. The same can be said for the second half as the Bears also outshot the Aces 8-3.
Evansville’s best chances in regulation occurred late in the second half. Missouri State goalkeeper Addison Watson made back to back saves on a 76th minute shot from senior forward Charlie Macias and an 81st minute blast from junior midfielder Mark Anthony Gonzalez to preserve the tie.
The Aces almost won the match in the 90th minute but a shot from junior midfielder Faik Hajderovic sailed high over the crossbar, sending the match to overtime.
Exactly three minutes into the first overtime, teammates Brandon Barbero and Parker Maher gained control of a goal kick to feed Hoegg over the top and into the middle of the 18 yard box for the game winner.
The loss snaps the Aces streak of four consecutive wins in MVC play.
Hajderovic took a team-high two shots for UE. Senior goalkeeper Eric Teppen had one save on the night.
The Aces will now have Sunday, Monday and Tuesday to prepare for a rematch against Bradley on Wednesday evening. The Braves knocked the Aces out of the 2013 MVC Men’s Soccer Championship Quarterfinals with a 3-2 double overtime win last season. UE was victorious 2-1 on the Braves home field back on October 11 of this season. Gonzalez and freshman midfielder Ian McGrath scored in the last meeting as Teppen notched eight saves. Bradley leads the all-time series 14-9-1 against Evansville.

Shorthanded UE Volleyball Loses to UNI
|
|
Despite being down several players, the University of Evansville volleyball team put up a valiant effort in a 3-0 loss against one of the top teams in the Missouri Valley Conference on Saturday night.
The University of Evansville (8-19, 3-11 MVC) played Saturday’s match down five player, almost 1/3 of the team, but was able to remain in the hunt versus the Panthers, who improved to 17-9 overall and 11-3 in the league.
Ashley Ring led all players with 12 kills in her 47 attempts. Next up for the Aces was Stephanie Cerino, who tallied six. In her first action as the primary setter for UE due to injury, Genesis Miranda had 20 assists. Defensively, Ring and Tathianna Cordero had eight digs. With so many players being forced into new positions, it was a night of adjustment for UE.
Leading UNI were Kayla Haneline and Eryca Hingtgen, who registered nine kills each. The Panthers hit a stellar .367 as Kinsey Caldwell checked in at .571.
UNI scooted out to a 5-1 edge in the opening set and never looked back, earning a 25-12 win. The shorthanded Aces did their best to hang in as Ashley Ring had three kills and Stephanie Cerino had two. Even more impressive was the performance of Genesis Miranda. Playing as the setter due to injuries, she had six assists in the game.
Evansville played better in the second frame, taking an early 2-0 lead as Tathianna Cordero posted a service ace. The Panthers came back with six of the next seven to take their first edge at 6-4. With UNI up 12-7, they reeled off the next five to put the set out of reach at 17-7. They finished with a 25-14 triumph.
UE played its best set in the third, taking another early 1-0 lead. The Panthers scored three in a row to retake the lead before UE fought back. A Ring kill helped the Aces tie it up. Two more ties led to a 6-6 score as UNI would record the next five en route to an 11-6 lead.
Down five, the Aces were able to keep the deficit in that vicinity until the final tallies. With UNI up 20-14, they were able to post the final five of the night to seal the match.
The Aces make their final road trip of the season next weekend. They trek to Wichita State for a 5 p.m. match on Friday before heading to Springfield, Mo. to face Missouri State on Saturday at 7. On Nov. 21, UE plays its final home contest of the season against Southern Illinois. Seniors Ashley Ring and Meaghan Holmes will be honored prior to the game.

Balentine Powers Aces Past Wabash, 95-50
|
|
Four players registered double figures as the University of Evansville men’s basketball team capped off exhibition play with a 95-50 victory over Wabash on Saturday afternoon at the Ford Center.
D.J. Balentine led the way with a 7-of-11 performance that netted him a game-high 22 points. Next up was Adam Wing. The junior also had a stellar outing, knocking all three long-range attempts en route to 16 points. Rounding out UE’s top scorers were sophomores Blake Simmons and Mislav Brzoja. They posted 12 and 11, respectively.
Daniel Purvlicis paced the Little Giants with 13 points to go along with eight caroms. Local product Kyle Aiton took a team-high 15 shots on his way to 11 points.
Wabash held strong over the first several minutes, taking a 13-12 lead, but from there, it was all UE. Evansville took an early 6-2 lead as Duane Gibson scored the opening four tallies of the game. The Little Giants made their way back as Newburgh, Ind. native Kyle Aiton scored seven in a row as they took a 13-12 advantage just over seven minutes in.
At that point, UE regrouped and scored the next seven before going up by as many as 22 in the period. Four Aces scored in the run before Adam Wing found his groove. The junior led everyone with 11 in the opening frame, including his second trey, which gave Evansville a 31-20 advantage.
Wing's three was part of a 13-0 stretch that saw the Aces go up 39-20. With 2:07 left, Egidijus Mockevicius hit his first bucket of the contest as the lead reached 22 before UE went to the locker room with a 45-26 advantage. Offensively, the teams were equally matched in the half, but the difference came from the free throw line. Evansville took 22 trips to the stripe, hitting 18 while Wabash made four trips and connected on each one.
In the second half, Evansville took full control of the game. With 13:04 left, the advantage reached 30 for the first time on a Balentine trey before the edge got as high as 45 with the final 95-50.
For the game, UE shot 56.6%, including 18-of-26 in the latter period (69.2%). The Little Giants finished the day at 33.3%.
Mockevicius and Brzoja led the Aces with seven boards apiece, but it was Wabash finishing with the 33-32 advantage. It was another unselfish performance for UE as they posted 19 assists on 30 attempts. Eleven out of the 12 Aces who played recorded an assist.
The regular season commences next weekend as the Purple Aces take on Earlham at the Ford Center. The squads will square off at 2:05 p.m. inside the Ford Center. From there, UE takes to the road for its next four games.
