Robin Sager to Speak at September Andiron Lecture
|
|
The University of Evansville’s annual Andiron Lecture Series begins September 3 with UE Assistant Professor of History Robin Sager speaking on “A Kind of Hell Upon Earth: Marital Cruelty in Antebellum America.” All the lectures are at 4 p.m. in Room 252 in Eykamp Hall in Ridgway University Center on UE’s campus. A social hour with beverages precedes each lecture at 3:45 p.m. All the lectures are all free and open to the public.
Sager earned a PhD in history, an MA in history, and a certification in women, gender, and sexuality studies from Rice University. She is currently revising a book manuscript for publication, tentatively titled Excesses and Outrages: Marital Cruelty in Antebellum America. Her research and teaching has been supported by the National Endowment for the
Humanities, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and the Wisconsin Historical Society, among others. In addition, her work has appeared within the Maryland Historical Magazine, The Southern Quarterly, and Teaching and Studying the Americas.
Despite reformist efforts, domestic violence retains its position as one of the world’s most stubborn and pervasive social ills. Looking for answers, various scholars have investigated numerous causes for domestic discord, including economic stressors, gender role imbalances, and the use of mind-altering substances. Continuing in this intellectual tradition, Sager's lecture will examine how communities across mid-nineteenth-century Virginia, Texas, and Wisconsin understood and defined possible situations of marital cruelty perpetrated by both husbands and wives. Divorce records from these three locations allow us to explore antebellum discourses regarding marriage and violence while also describing how cruelty actually occurred in homes across the United States.
