* Dianne Oliver Chosen to Participate in Teaching Interfaith Understanding Seminar

Dianne Oliver, associate dean in the College of Arts and Sciences, director of the Ethics Program and professor of religion, has been selected to participate in a Teaching Interfaith Understanding seminar for faculty. Oliver was chosen from a nationwide pool of nominees to take part in the seminar, set for Aug 3-7 at DePaul University in Chicago, Illinois.

The event is designed to broaden faculty members’ knowledge and strengthen their teaching of interfaith understanding, with the development of new courses and resources. It is being offered by the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) and Interfaith Youth Core (IFYC), with support from the Henry Luce Foundation.

The seminar will be led by two leading scholars, Eboo Patel, founder and president of IFYC, a Chicago-based organization building the interfaith movement on college campuses, and Laurie Patton, dean of Trinity College of Arts and Sciences and the Robert F. Durden Professor of Religion at Duke University.

“Strengthening the teaching of interfaith understanding at colleges and universities is a high priority at a time when college enrollment is becoming more diverse - by religion, as well as socioeconomic factor - just as American society is becoming more diverse,” said CIC President Richard Ekman. “Strengthening participation in American life with greater understanding of the distinctive contributions of different faiths is key to America’s future success. The number of institutions that nominated faculty members to participate in the new interfaith understanding seminar is most impressive.”

Athletics

* UE Women's Basketball Adds Johnson

University of Evansville head women’s basketball coach Oties Epps announced the addition of Kenyia Johnson to the Purple Aces program Thursday afternoon.  Johnson, a guard from Fleming Island High School in Orange Park, Fla., will join the squad for the 2014-15 campaign.

“We are extremely excited to welcome Kenyia to our women’s basketball program,” Epps said.  “Kenyia is a well-rounded player and is an explosive athlete on both sides of the ball.  She excels in the open court and she has the unique ability to get to the rim and finish.  We anticipate Kenyia having an immediate impact within our program both on and off the court.”

A three-year starter for the Golden Eagles, Johnson led Fleming Island to three District 7A championships and was named Florida Athletic Coaches Association (FACA) 7A Player of the Year as a senior.  She was named to the All-Florida Times Union First Coast Third Team in 2014 and was an All-Florida Times Union First Coast Second Team selection on both 2012 and 2013.  In her three years at Fleming Island, Johnson established school records for points (1,206), assists (242), steals (274), blocked shots (140) and rebounds (407).

Johnson is the sixth addition to Aces’ roster this offseason, joining Aalyiah Gaines (Fort Wayne, Ind./Eastern Illinois), Ashley Hawkins (Sacramento, Calif./Vincennes Univ.), Peyton Langston (Santa Ana, Calif./Mater Dei), Asia Petitte (Charleston, W. Va./St. Joseph Central Catholic) and Taloni Reese (South Bend, Ind./South Bend Adams).

* Freeland Named to 18-Man Pitcher of the Year Award Watch List

University of Evansville junior Kyle Freeland was one of just 18 pitchers named to the watch list for the Pitcher of the Year Award, sponsored by Diamond, in a release issued by the College Baseball Hall of Fame Wednesday afternoon.

Freeland, who is 10-2 with a 1.90 ERA, is one of just five pitchers on the list with over 100 strikeouts this season, as the Denver, Colo., native has fanned 128 opposing hitters and walked just 13 in his 99.2 innings this season.  In addition, Freeland has surrendered just 13 extra-base hits during his junior campaign and is limiting opponents to a .214 batting average.

The Pitcher of the Year Award will be presented during the National College Baseball Hall of Fame’s annual Night of Champions on June 28 in Lubbock, Texas.
