Emeritus Professor Helen Smith passed away on October 16, 2010.  Dr. Smith was the Dean of the School of Nursing until her retirement in 1984.  A memorial service is scheduled to celebrate Dr. Smith’s life on Saturday, June 18, at 10:30 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 609 SE Second Street in Evansville, with Pastor Kevin Flemming officiating.  President Emeritus Wallace B. UE baseball player Cody Fick has been selected in the 23rd round of the 2011 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft by the Philadelphia Phillies. Fick was taken with the 30th pick in the 23rd round by the Phillies, pick number 721 overall, marking the 29th UE player to be selected in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft since Evansville entered the Missouri Valley Conference in 1995. Fick will mark the 51st Purple Ace since 1984 to play professionally and the 45th UE player to play affiliated professional baseball.

Playing three seasons for the Aces after transferring from Jefferson College, Fick was honored with a number of accolades throughout his career, including national recognition as a second team Louisville Slugger All-American, UE’s seventh All-American in program history. Fick was also named a semifinalist for the Dick Howser Trophy, the National Player of the Year Award conferred by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association’s (NCBW), and was named to the John Olerud Two-Way Player Watch List. Fick was a standout in the Missouri Valley Conference as a three-time All-MVC selection, two-time preseason All-MVC pick, MVC All-Tournament Team selection, and MVC Player of the Week.

In his senior season, Fick piloted UE with a .406 batting average, .641 slugging percentage, 86 hits, 71 RBI, nine home runs, 21 doubles, and 136 total bases. He finished 2011 ranked third nationally, averaging 1.39 RBI per game and was in the top 50 in eight offensive categories. Fick recorded 29 multi-hit games, 19 multi-RBI games and ended his career on a 14-game hitting streak. On the mound, Fick went 7-4 with five complete games, two shutouts, a 2.36 ERA, and limited his opposition to a .223 batting average.

Fick’s 2011 season was highlighted by a complete-game shutout over Jacksonville, an NCAA Regional squad, while also having a hand in all seven of UE’s runs at the plate on March 8. Fick also led the Aces to their first Missouri Valley Conference victory of the season when he belted a two-out grand slam to give UE the lead for good over Wichita State on April 15, and also tossed a four-hit complete-game with a career-high 11 strikeouts in the opening contest of the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tournament versus the Shockers on May 24.

In UE’s career record books, Fick ranks second in RBI (182) and in home runs (37), and third in career batting average (.353).
