Isabella Fine passed away June 3, at home. She was 96 years old. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she was the eighth of 11 children and often said that wisdom and appreciation of life "comes from our families." Isabella's passion for life and sense of humor were widely acknowledged, and her desire to laugh and learn was unmatched.

She contributed to and received greatly from her engagement in the Evansville community.  She served as director of Special Projects under UE President Wallace Graves and was active in the Harlaxton Society.  She was food editor at the Evansville Courier and Press for many years.  Isabella had been president of Washington Elementary School PTA, and board member of Bosse and Harrison High School’s PTAs. She was chair of the board of directors of the Raintree Council Girl Scouts of America. A member of Temple Adath B'Nai Israel, she served as president of the Sisterhood and was the principal of the Temple Religious School. Most recently she had been involved in the EVSC Foundation, serving on the Emeritus Board of Directors, the Public Education Foundation, the New Harmony Project, as well as lending support to the EVSC Signature School.  She served on the boards of the Evansville Philharmonic Guild, Evansville Museum, Channel 9 WNIN, and the YWCA, where she was recently named one of the outstanding women of the last 100 years.

Isabella received her bachelor's degree in home economics and dietetics from the University of Kentucky.

She is survived by her son, Philip E. Fine and wife Genevieve of Kinnelon, N.J.; daughters, Rosalind Brawer and husband James of Montreal, Canada, and Amy Fine and husband Chester Hartman of Washington D.C.; grandchildren, Jennifer Fine, Tristan Fine, Jeremy Fine Hartman and Benjamin Fine Hartman, Naftali Brawer, Dovid Brawer, Devorah Karp, Nechama New, Chana Ehrentreu, Shana Bazelmans, and Tara Bazelmans-Potter and 23 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be today from 10 to 11 a.m. at Neu Chapel.  A commemoration of her life will begin at 11 a.m. at the chapel. A private burial will be held at Rose Hill Cemetery. Parking for the visitation and commemoration service at Neu Chapel will be in Parking Lot N on the corner of Rotherwood and Walnut.

Emeritus Professor Helen Smith passed away on October 16, 2010.  Dr. Smith was the Dean of the School of Nursing until her retirement in 1984.  A memorial service is scheduled to celebrate Dr. Smith’s life on Saturday, June 18, at 10:30 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 609 SE Second Street in Evansville, with Pastor Kevin Flemming officiating.  President Emeritus Wallace B. The Office of Admission is having its annual summer Open House on Saturday, July 16. Carol Dallinger, Oramay Cluthe Eades Distinguished Professor of Music, recently returned from participating in the Suzuki Association of the Americas Leadership Conference in Dallas, Texas. This conference focuses on the work of leaders in the Suzuki Association, including teacher trainers. The University of Evansville is one of only 17 colleges and universities in the nation to offer Suzuki training to music students. Professor Dallinger is a registered teacher trainer with the Suzuki Association.
