The annual employee Health Screening is set for June 13, 12:30–6 p.m., and June 14, 7 a.m.–5 p.m., in Eykamp 252, Ridgway University Center.  A second screening will be offered in September.  This is the first opportunity for HRA participants to earn credits this insurance-plan year.

A new Healthy Lifestyle Challenge will begin June 20.  You may register at the Health Screening or see the wellness nurse.  Cash prizes and HRA credits will be awarded for participation.

University of Evansville baseball players Jared Baehl and Trentt Copeland earned Missouri Valley Conference First-Team Scholar Athlete honors as voted on by the league's baseball sports information directors and announced by the Missouri Valley Conference office today.

Baehl, who was named to the 2011 Capitol One Academic All-District Team last month, hit .300 in his senior season and ranked ninth in the country, averaging 0.16 triples per game with six on the year. He recorded nine multi-RBI and 18 multi-hit games this season, including three hits in UE’s first game of the State Farm MVC Tournament versus Wichita State and led UE to wins over Indiana State (5/7) and Creighton (5/15) with two hits and three RBI in each contest. Baehl hit a home run versus Arkansas State (2/25) and finished a home run shy of the cycle at St. Louis (3/30). In the classroom, the senior carried a 3.32 cumulative grade-point average in management and was named the Prairie Farms MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week on April 6.

Copeland was a two-time pick for the Prairie Farms MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week this season. He hit .365 in MVC games and .308 on the season, leading the team with a .453 on-base percentage in Valley games. The Copeland recorded 18 multi-hit games and 17 doubles and reached base in every MVC game on the schedule. At second base, Copeland had a hand in 36 double plays, leading UE to a 17th national rank in double plays per game (1.09) and recorded a Valley-high nine assists versus Michigan State (3/19). The junior also made four starts on the mound and earned the win in his collegiate pitching debut, throwing five scoreless innings, giving up two hits, and striking out three at UT-Martin (3/1). Copeland owns a 3,69 cumulative GPA in management.

The criteria for the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete Team voting parallels the CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) standards for Academic All-America voting.  Nominees must be starters or important reserves, with at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average.  Student-athletes must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at their institution and must have completed at least one full academic year at their institution.

 

Senior Cody Fick of the University of Evansville baseball team has been named a second-team Louisville Slugger All-American, as announced by the Collegiate Baseball newspaper.

“What a great honor for Cody to receive this recognition,” said Head Coach Wes Carroll. “He had a great year and wonderful career here at UE.  It’s great for our program to produce an All-American.”

Fick proved to be one of the top two-way players in the country, as he led Evansville in the majority of offensive and defensive categories. At the plate, Fick piloted UE with a .406 batting average, .641 slugging percentage, 86 hits, 71 RBI, nine home runs, 21 doubles, and 136 total bases in 2011. He finished the season ranked third nationally, averaging 1.39 RBI per game and is in the top 50 in eight offensive categories. Fick recorded 29 mult-hit games and 19 multi-RBI games this season and finished his career on a 14-game hitting streak.

Against Jacksonville (3/8), Fick had a hand in all seven of UE’s runs at the plate, while also throwing a complete-game shutout on the mound. Fick led the Aces to their first Missouri Valley Conference victory of the season when he belted a two-out grand slam to give UE the lead for good over Wichita State on April 15. Again versus the Shockers, Fick tossed a four-hit complete game with a career-high 11 strikeouts in the opening contest of the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tournament.

Fick finished 7-4 on the mound with five complete games, two shutouts, a 2.36 ERA, and limited his opposition to a .223 batting average.

In UE’s career record books, he ranks second in RBI (182) and in home runs (37), and third in career batting average (.353).
“It is an honor to be named an All-American,” said Fick. “I think it reflects the type of program and coaching staff that the University of Evansville has.  I enjoyed my student-athlete experience very much while at Evansville, and I am sure that this program will continue to stay on the map with not only individual recognition but great team successes in the future.”
Fick marks the UE baseball program’s seventh All-American and first since 2000 to earn Collegiate Baseball All-America honors. Most recently, pitcher Steve Obenchain was chosen to the ABCA/Rawlings third-team in 2002, while pitcher Ryan Miller was named Collegiate Baseball third-team in 2000. Both of those players went on to play professionally.

Fick hopes to get picked in next week’s 2011 Major League Baseball Draft, running from June 6-8.
