* Women's HER-Story Month Event

March 18

"You Can’t Be What You Can’t See: Contributing to Stereotypes of Women in the Media"
This panel discussion will be loosely based on the film Miss Representation, a 2011 American documentary film written, directed, and produced by Jennifer Siebel Newsom. Thisdocumentary explores how mainstream media contributes to the under-representation of women in influential positions by circulating limited and often disparaging portrayals of women. The film’s motto, “You can’t be what you can’t see,” underscores an implicit message that young women need and want positive role models, and that the media has thus far neglected its unique opportunity to provide them

 
* This Week in Music: Piano Recital on Tuesday, March 18

Associate Professor of Piano Garnet Ungar will present this week’s Faculty Recital in Wheeler Concert Hall on Tuesday evening at 7:30 p.m. The recital will feature works by Domenico Scarlatti and Sergei Rachmaninoff, as well as Beethoven’s Sonata in D Major, Op. 10, No. 3. The concert is free and open to the public

* Meeting to Discuss Formation of Philosophy Club

There will be a meeting on Wednesday, March 19 from 4-5 p.m. in Room 71, Schroeder Family School of Business Building  to discuss creating a Philosophy Club that will meet next Fall.

Socrates famously said the unexamined life is not worth living. So come and examine your life and reap the existential rewards by coming to this philosophy group meeting. * $1000 in Cash Prizes for World Changing Ideas – IGE's Social Enterprise Week & Changemaker Challenge

Join us for food and refreshments as we give details of the Institute for Global Enterprise's "CHANGEMAKER CHALLENGE," a conceptual design competition open to all UE students. Students from all majors are encouraged to participate.

The Institute for Global Enterprise Executive Director will be on hand to discuss the role of the Institute on campus, outline the events of Social Enterprise Week (April 7 -11), and provide details to students interested in participating in the Changemaker Challenge.

The session will take place in the Class of ’59 Gallery (2nd floor open space) in the Ridgway University Center on Friday, March 21 from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m.

* Physical Therapy Club Meeting on Wednesday

The physical therapy club will be holding its March meeting on Wednesday, March 19 at 12 pm. The meeting will take place in Graves Hall, room 104. New members and returning members are welcome to attend.

 
* I-House: Thailand | Wednesday at 5:30pm

Be sure to attend I-House: Thailand at an earlier time this week. We will meet at 5:30 pm in order to watch "The Muslims Are Coming" documentary at 7 pm.

Bhuree Dardarananda will discuss what his life is like in Thailand. Attendees will learn about culture, lifestyle, food, and so much more.

Bring your friends to enjoy the presentation this Wednesday at 5:30pm on the 2nd floor of Ridgway University Center in the Class of 1959 Gallery.
 

 
* Buy a Meal for the War on Hunger Today!

The Salvation Army is hosting their annual War on Hunger and this year, the University of Evansville has pledged to raise $500 to provide a full skid of food for those in need. We have an opportunity for you to contribute to the WAR on HUNGER.

First, you can purchase a meal ticket voucher for Cafe Court. The. meal vouchers are $5 and 100% of the money will be donated to the Salvation Army WAR on HUNGER. There are only nine tickets left - to purchase one, please go to Amy Clutter's desk in the Center for Student Engagement.

Second, you can make a monetary donation by going to https://donate.salvationarmyusa.org/sslpage.aspx?pid=206. Be sure to put the University of Evansville as the company name so that we can track our donations.

Locally, the food banks in Evansville and the surrounding area have received cuts in funding and food distribution centers, soup kitchens and food banks have been unable to financially keep up with the demand to offer food for those in need. Please consider making a donation to help fight hunger in the Tri-State area.

 

Info You Should Know

* May Graduates

May graduates are reminded to please contact the UE Bookstore as soon as possible if you are in need of a cap and gown and/or announcements for graduation. Masters and Doctoral graduates regalia is custom made and requires additional time to make so it is critical that MASTERS and DOCTORAL graduates place cap, gown, and hood orders immediately. If you have any questions please contact the Bookstore. Please allow 3-5 days for the production of graduation announcements if you so choose to purchase them.

 
* Faculty Regalia Rentals

Faculty needing to rent regalia for May's Graduation should contact the UE Bookstore so that rental orders can be placed by March 21 to insure the proper colors of garments.

 
* Reminder to Female May Graduates

This is a reminder to all FEMALE May graduates that if you didn't receive an optional white collar in your cap and gown bachelor package those are available in the UE Bookstore now. The white collars are an optional item. If you have any questions please contact the UE Bookstore.

* Margery Florence Kahn Scholarship for 2014-15 -- Applications now available

All University of Evansville full-time undergraduate students who will be juniors or seniors in 2014-15 may apply. An essay of about 300 words must accompany the application, along with two to five faculty recommendation letters.

It was the desire of the donor, Margery Florence Kahn, that her scholarship be awarded to "dedicated and conscientious students who exhibit a true passion for their chosen fields of study, and who, in the opinion of the members of the University of Evansville faculty, are likely to bring the same enthusiasm into the performance of their jobs or the practice of the professions which they will pursue following graduation."

Applications are available from the Office of Financial Aid (Olmsted Hall 116). Completed applications and recommendation letters should be returned to the Office of Financial Aid by April 1.

* Nominations being accepted-Dean of Students Leadership Awards

Nominations are now being accepted for consideration of The Howard S. Rosenblatt “Dean of Students Leadership Awards”.  These awards will be presented at the 21st Annual Leadership Awards Reception scheduled for April 24. 

Awards are presented in the following categories:

  • Student Organization Advisor of the Year
  • Student Organization of the Year
  • Student Leader of the Year

Over 80% of UE students participate in at least one student organization or program.  These organizations are successful because of the commitment of the student leaders and the advisors who give freely of their time and support.  The recipients of these awards are selected based on their commitment to the University of Evansville as well as the development and success of their efforts within their chosen student organization.

Congratulations

* Margaret McMullan's 7th book of fiction to be published in 2015

UE Professor of Creative Writing Margaret McMullan’s collection of stories Aftermath Lounge will be published in 2015 by Calypso Editions. Professor McMullan received a fiction fellowship from the National Endowment of the Arts to complete this cycle of stories about the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

Stories in the collection have been published in Ploughshares, TriQuarterly, Michigan Quarterly Review, StorySouth, The Arkansas Review, The Montréal Review, The Southern California Anthology, Louisiana Literature, Fiction at Work, Freight Stories, and The Sun among other journals and anthologies including Christmas Stories from the South’s Best Writers. One story, “The Swing,” was highlighted in Southern Living magazine and performed by WordTheatre in Los Angeles, California.

Aftermath Lounge is Professor McMullan’s first short story collection and her seventh book of fiction. She is the Melvin M. Peterson Endowed Chair in Literature and Writing.

 
* Bass Fishing Club Finishes 21st in National Championships

Nick Uebelhor and Eric Kieffner represented the UE Bass Fishing Club over Spring Break at the National Championships in South Carolina. Nick and Eric qualified for the National Championships in 2013 and were 1 of 50 teams in the nation invited to compete in the two-day tournament. The tandem finished 21st out of 50 teams with a total of 13lbs. 10oz. for the two-day tournament!

Nick also competed this past weekend with Lee Knies in the BoatUS Collegiate Open in Tennessee. They finished 21st out of 83 teams with a catch totaling 27.58 pounds for the two-day tournament!

Nick and Eric will be on the water again this weekend in Missouri on Table Rock Lake to begin their bid for the 2015 FLW National Championships.

 
* Jennie Ebeling presents two lectures in Tucson

Jennie Ebeling, associate professor of archaeology and Chair of the Department of Archaeology and Art History, gave two presentations in Tucson, AZ over spring break. On March 11 she presented on the Jezreel Expedition as part of The Arizona Center for Judaic Studies' Sally and Ralph Duchin Campus Lecture Series at the University of Ariziona and on March 14 she screened the film "Bread Culture in Jordan" at the Arabian Oasis cultural center. Ebeling is associate producer of this documentary film, which was made as part of her NEH-funded research in Jordan in fall 2012.

 
* UE's IEEE Robot Team Places Second!!

University of Evansville’s electrical engineering seniors Jake Schwartz and Austin Deuerling had a successful weekend at the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) SoutheastCon Regional Competition in Lexington, Kentucky on Saturday March 15th. Their robot placed second out of 42 teams. Austin and Jake designed a robot to shoot darts in a simulated basketball goal from various distances to emulate the playing and shooting dynamics of basketball on a simulated basketball court. The winners were decided by the number of points earned by completing goals and completion time. The highest scoring robots were both fast and precise. UE earned 2nd place above teams such as Duke, Virginia Tech, and the University of Florida. Congratulations Austin, Jake, and the University of Evansville!

 
* Cris Hochwender Gives Seminar for Southwestern Indiana Master Gardeners Association

Professor of Biology Cris Hochwender was the invited speaker at March meeting of the Southwestern Indiana Master Gardeners Association (*SWIMGA). The March meeting was well attended, with over 150 members present for the event. Dr. Hochwender's presentation, entitled, ‘Enhancing Native Plant Diversity at Vectren Conservation Park: How It Can Apply to Your Backyard,' discussed the efforts being invested in restoration ecology at the University of Evansville. Specifically, Dr. Hochwender discussed restoration efforts at Vectren Conservation Park (the Environmental Studies Program's 1100 acre research property). The native plant diversity that resides in the Koch Courtyard’s Native Plant Garden was also used as a forum to discuss the native plants master gardeners might choose for their own backyards—which plants would be attractive, recruit pollinators, and/or recruit interesting herbivores.

*SWIMGA members are trained volunteers that participate in community outreach to teach the public more about growing plants; SWIMGA is also well known for its May plant sale.
 

 
* English Honors Society Presents Papers

Congratulations to members of Sigma Tau Delta, the English Honor Society who presented their work at the annual conference in Savannah, Georgia. Chris Norris, Anna Scheffer, and Emily Kreible represented UE's Sigma Tau Delta chapter and read from their scholarly and creative work. * Campus Community Helped Make Honors Program Nerd Wars a Success!

Thank you for making the Honors Program Nerd Wars a success! Attendees and spectators enjoyed the fun and food sponsored in part by funds from the Student Government Association. Prizes were awarded to the winning student team, Sexy and Friends (Neil Brookhouse, Anjelica Allen, Cameron Roberts and Caroline Kopff) and the winning faculty/administrator/staff team, Consilience (Dr. Ann Powell, Dr. John Stamm, Dr. Joyce Stamm, Dr. Daniel Byrne, Dr. Kristie Hochwender). The Nerd Wars trophy grand prize went to Consilience, the team with the most total points. $593.00 was generated from the event and given to Honors Ace Mentors (HAM). HAM is a UE student volunteer outreach program administered by the Honors Program/HPSAC to provide tutoring, cultural enrichment, and mentoring for grade school through high school students in the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation.

 

Athletics

* Men's Golf tied for fifth at Nichols Intercollegiate

Through 36 holes of play, senior Quinn Vilneff paced the University of Evansville men’s golf team as the Purple Aces stand in a tie for fifth place at the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate at Sevierville Golf Club.

Vilneff posted rounds of 73 and 72 on his way to a 145 in Monday’s opening two rounds of action. He wrapped up the day in a tie for ninth place and is eight strokes off the lead.

Reigning Missouri Valley Conference Men’s Golfer of the Week Alex Turner was next on the UE list. Standing just three shots behind Vilneff, Turner toured the course with rounds of 75 and 73 to card a 148 on the day.

Senior Parker Hensley totaled 150 strokes on Monday as he sits in a tie for 29th on the leaderboard. Following a first round of 77, Hensley improved by four strokes in his second trip around the course, finishing with a 73.

Rick Voyvodic registered rounds of 78 and 75 on his way to a 153 (T-38) while Will Knights completed the Aces contingent with a 172 (T-73). Back in action as an individual, Jon Pick recorded rounds of 80 and 78 to finish the day in a tie for 61st with a 158.

 

The University of Tennessee holds a commanding lead of 20 strokes after Monday’s two rounds posting a 565. The Volunteers placed all five of their team members in the top 16 while holding the top two scores. Sitting in second place is Eastern Kentucky with a 585 while West Georgia is in third place with a 593.

UT Martin finished the opening day in fourth place with a 595 while Evansville and Detroit are tied for fifth with identical scores of 596. The pair is three shots ahead of 7th-place Longwood.

Oliver Goss of the Vols has a 5-stroke lead on the individual side. Goss posted rounds of 71 before a 6-under 66 to tally a 137. Danny Keddie (UT) and Taylor Riggs (EKU) are tied for second with scores of 142.

Tomorrow, the squads take to the course for the final round of 18 at Sevierville Golf Club.
 

 
* UE Women tied for Sixth at Nichols Intercollegiate

Freshman Kayla Katterhenry finished round one in the top five as the University of Evansville women’s golf team is tied for sixth place at the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate.

Katterhenry led the Purple Aces contingent at Sevierville Golf Club with a 4-over 75 in the opening round of play on Monday. She posted a 38 on the front nine before finishing the final nine holes with a 37. She enters the final round five shots off the lead.

Fellow freshman Maggie Camp continued her strong start to the spring, finishing Monday’s action in a tie for 21st with an 81. She finished just ahead of Cathy Doyle, who is tied for 25th with an 82.

Paige Crafton carded an 85 on Monday while Dana Hayden finished the day with a 103. In her round as an individual, Sydney Skiles recorded an 83 to tie for 30th place. She was the second-highest individual on the day.

Murray State sits atop the leaderboard with a 315 as the top five teams are separated by just five shots. The Racers sit two strokes ahead of Marshall University while Eastern Kentucky (318), West Georgia (319) and Indiana State (320) round out the top five.

Evansville and Belmont sit in a sixth place tie with a 323.

Delaney Howson of Murray State leads the way for the individuals as she finished the first round with a 1-under 70. It was the lone sub-par round of the day. Rachel Thompson (Marshall) and Marissa Uradomo (Indiana State) are tied for second with rounds of 74. Katterhenry is tied for fourth with her round of 75.

Tomorrow, the squads take to the course for the final round of 18 at Sevierville Golf Club.
