The people in the Center for Student Engagement have been cleaning out cabinets and now have lots of things to give away. Go over to their area today through Friday and see if they have anything that you might want or need!

The office of Safety & Security will hold its annual Lost and Found Auction on Wednesday March 26. You will be able to view the items in Eykamp 252, Ridgway University Center, from 10 a.m.-3 p. m., on the 26th. This is a silent auction - all bids are confidential.

UE Director of Orchestras Brian St. John has composed a new ballet based on the Hans Christian Andersen classic story, "The Little Mermaid." The ballet's world premiere will take place in Evansville at the Victory Theater on Saturday, March 15, at 7:00 PM. Dr. St. John will be conducting the Evansville Philharmonic Youth Orchestra for the premiere. The ballet is choreographed by Mark Bush and will be danced by Evansville Ballet Theater. UE student Sarah Stolnack is the lighting designer. Tickets are available through the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra, 812-425-5050. This is the eighth ballet that St. John has written and premiered.

Bronda Simmons, a member of the Development team, lost her 25th anniversary ring last week. Senior Groundskeeper David Sellers found it in the parking lot and returned it to her. THANK YOU DAVID!

Freshman Maggie Camp posted the low score of the day for her squad as the University of Evansville women’s golf team finished in ninth place in the spring-opening Don Benbow Invitational at Jacksonville Beach Golf Club.

Camp carded an 84 in the second and final round on her way to a tie for 34th place overall. She posted a 175, improving her efforts by seven strokes in the final round.

Leading the team overall was another frosh and area native, Kayla Katterhenry. She tied for 23rd with her score of 169. Katterhenry posted an 82 on Monday before carding an 87. Paige Crafton was next in line for the Purple Aces. The sophomore tied for 31st with a 173 with rounds of 87 and 86, respectively.

Tying for 58th was Dana Hayden. She followed up Monday’s 98 with a round of 97 on Tuesday. Sydney Skiles played as an individual as she tied Camp for 34th with a 175. Her rounds finished at 87 and 88.

Newberry College overcame a deficit of seven strokes en route to the victory. Newberry trailed Cleveland State, 326-333, following Monday’s round but came out firing on Tuesday, posting a tournament-low 316. Four Newberry players finished in the top 17.

Cleveland State took second-place honors. Despite shooting two strokes lower on Tuesday (324), the Vikings fell one shot short of Newberry, who posted a 2-round total of 649. Alabama State took third with a 655. Evansville finished in ninth with a 712.Medalist for the tournament was Ana Fernandez de Mes of IUPUI. She shot an event-low 73 on Tuesday to finish with a 149. She finished the event two strokes ahead of Dismary Marquez from Alabama State, who posted rounds of 76 and 75 to finish with a 151.

Next up for the Aces is a trip to Sevierville, Tenn. for the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate. Sevierville Golf Club will play host to the event on March 17 and 18.
 

Senior Quinn Vilneff carded a team-low 70 as the Purple Aces men's golf team was victorious in the Don Benbow Invitational at Jacksonville Beach Golf Club on Tuesday afternoon.

Evansville improved on its tournament-leading score in day two. After shooting a 293 on Monday, the Aces came back with a 288 on Tuesday, tying for the lowest round of the event.

Sophomore Alex Turner finished in third place overall to lead UE. Following a 72 in the first round, Turner posted an even 71 to finish with a 143. One stroke behind him was Quinn Vilneff, who finished with a 144. Tuesday's round saw Vilneff finish with a 1-under 70 to finish in fourth place.

Another sophomore, Will Knights, also finished in the top ten. He posted a 72 on Tuesday en route to a 146 for the tournament. Parker Hensely completed the event with a 148 and was followed by Rick Voyvodic, who totaled a 161. Jon Pick played on his own, posting a solid 155 in his two rounds of play.

The Aces held off Florida Atlantic by three strokes to take the team championship. Evansville held a 3-shot lead over the Owls after Monday before each finished with a 288 on Tuesday as UE took a 581-584 decision. Cleveland State took third place with a 591.

Caleb Sibley of FAU was the top individual, carding a 2-round score of 141. He defeated Jose Pa Sequrola of IUPUI by a stroke.

Next up for the Aces is a trip to Sevierville, Tenn. for the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate. Sevierville Golf Club will play host to the event on March 17 and 18.

Evansville’s second matchup on their trek to Florida saw the Purple Aces fall by a 4-1 final on the road to Florida Gulf Coast on Tuesday afternoon.

For the fifth time in six matches, the Aces were victorious in doubles as Kelsey Costales and Natasha James hung on for an 8-7 win over sisters Elizabeth and Sarah Means. Marina Moreno and Marketa Trousilova were also victorious for the second day in a row. The pair got past Johanna Sterkel and Bettina Botha, 8-6.

In flight three, Breana Stampfli and Candela Munoz Giron finished with an 8-2 victory over Mina Milovic and Angjela Brguljan.

The Eagles swept singles play as they completed the 4-1 victory with two matches going unfinished. Stampfli earned the win over James in the second spot, 6-4, 7-6 while Sterkel defeated Costales, 6-3, 6-1, in their matchup in the third slot.

E. Means defeated Moreno in the fourth flight, 6-3, 6-3 while Munoz Giron was victorious over Brguljan in group five, 6-0, 6-0. Flights one and six were unfinished. At the top spot, Trousilova held the lead over S. Means, winning the first set 6-3. Following a 6-4 defeat in the second, she held a 2-1 edge in the third. Milovic held the advantage in the sixth flight, 3-6, 6-2 and 4-5.

On Thursday, Evansville will look for a winning record on the trip as they take on James Madison. Set for a noon ET start, the match will be held at Hillsborough Community College in Tampa.
 

The University of Evansville softball team couldn’t get its offense clicking this afternoon in a mid-week doubleheader against nationally ranked Missouri, leading to two loses on the day.

The Purple Aces (9-8) fell in both games against Missouri (15-5). The final score of game one was 7-3 and game two was 6-2.

And although Head Coach Mark Reburn’s team lost, he saw a ton of positives from the Aces:

“I think the big thing that we took away from today was that we were able to square up on a lot of balls, hitting a lot of line drives and we were able to make some good defensive plays. Megan (Gurski) and Kayla (Fortner) both went yard on the day and that was great for our offense. Our girls competed really well and that’s all we can ask.”

“In game two, we were able to compete despite trailing in the sixth. Our team didn’t quit and they still battled and we were able to put two runs on the board in the bottom of the seventh. These games are definitely going to help us down the road, as we showed strong heart throughout the losses.”

Game One
In game one of the doubleheader, Evansville would bring in freshman Briana Combs to the circle and the right-hander held Missouri’s offense in check through the first two innings.

The Purple Aces would strike first in the bottom of the second as a sacrifice-fly from Kirsten O’Conner would drive in Michal Luckett, giving UE the early 1-0 lead.

Mizzou would strike back in the top of the third on an RBI single by Emily Crane.

Combs would keep the Tigers scoreless in the top of the fourth and Evansville would take advantage.

The Purple Aces got back to back home runs from juniors Megan Gurski and Kayla Fortner to begin the bottom of the fourth, putting Evansville up 3-1 going into the top of the fifth.

Annie Moore (2-1) would enter the game for Combs and pitch a scoreless fifth inning. But during the top of the sixth is where Missouri would take over.

Mizzou would score four runs in the top of the sixth, as Moore would give up 4 RBI and two homers, giving Missouri the 5-3 lead. The sophomore pitcher would receive the loss pitching 1.2 innings, giving up four runs. The Aces brought Combs back in the game and she would close out the inning.

Evansville wouldn’t be able to match the Tigers offensive power in the bottom of the sixth and Missouri would take advantage in the top of the seventh.

Missouri would add two more runs off of a homerun in the top of the seventh and Evansville wouldn’t be able to come back in the bottom of the inning, giving Mizzou the 7-3 victory.

Game Two
Game two started out as a pitching battle between junior Megan Gurski (4-4) and Casey Stangel (7-2) as both pitchers would hold the opposing offenses scoreless through the first three innings.

The top of the fourth was where the Tigers would take over. Missouri would score six runs in the top of the inning, and that would be all the action Gurski would see on the day. The Saskatchewan native, who would receive the loss, finished with six runs on six hits, striking out one in 4.0 innings.

Evansville would bring in Emily Morris for the rest of the contest and Morris would hold the Tigers offense in check. Morris would finish the contest allowing only one hit in 3.0 innings of work.

The Purple Aces would add two runs in the bottom of the seventh on a single homerun by Megan Gurski and an RBI single by Luckett, but the runs would come too late as Evansville would fall, 6-2.

UE will host in-state and Missouri Valley Conference rival Indiana State this weekend in its first conference play of the 2014 season. The games will take place on Mar.15-16 starting at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday.
