Evansville Back In Win Column With 78-65 Victory
|
|
Sophomore Egidijus Mockevicius posted the first double-double of his career as the Purple Aces men’s basketball team picked up a 78-65 win over Miami University on Saturday afternoon at the Ford Center.
Mockevicius has hit double digits in the last three games for the Aces (6-3) and finished Saturday with 17 points on a 7-11 performance from the floor while tallying a game-high 13 rebounds. D.J. Balentine led all scorers with 22 points. He hit 9 of his 12 free throws to hit the 20-point mark for the seventh time in nine games.
Duane Gibson totaled 12 points, knocking down 8-of-10 free throws while dishing out a team-best seven assists. Fellow freshman Blake Simmons posted ten points and six rebounds.
It was Balentine getting the Aces on the board with a 3-pointer in the opening two minutes. The Aces defense held Miami to 0-4 to begin the game, including 0-for-3 from outside. Reggie Johnson notched a putback to get the RedHawks (1-5) on the board before Blake Simmons hit a trey to make it a 6-2 game.
Miami closed back in, but the Aces continued to shoot well at Tyler Ptack drained a three as UE made it a 23-11 score inside of 11 minutes remaining in the stanza. Evansville hit three of its first four from outside while holding MU to 0-7. Joshua Oswald changed that as his trey helped the RedHawks cut the deficit to seven points at 24-17.
After MU cut it to six points at 32-26 at the four minute mark, Evansville completed the period on an 8-2 stretch to take a 38-28 lead at halftime. The lead reached as many as 12 points before a late Johnson bucket completed the half.
Mockevicius had the hot hand to begin the second half as he posted two early layups to put the Aces up 14 points at 42-28. He also grabbed three more rebounds in the opening moments of the period to register the first double-double of his career. A 7-of-13 beginning to the second frame saw the Aces go up by a 52-36 score just over eight minutes in forcing the RedHawks to call a time out.
The break helped out as they were able to chop six points off of it as Will Sullivan downed his second trey of the day to make it 56-46 inside of ten minutes remaining. Their rally continued as they got within eight points, but Blake Simmons made it a perfect 2-for-2 from long range as his trey gave UE a 61-51 advantage with five minutes left.
Evansville’s lead remained in double figures for the remainder of the game, reaching as many as 15 points (69-54) before finishing at a final of 78-65.
Johnson was the leading scorer for Miami, tallying 21 points and a game-high eight assists. Will Felder and Geovonie McKnight finished the day with 13 points apiece.
Being back home helped the Aces shoot their way to a 52.3% final on Saturday while the defense held the RedHawks to 39% overall and 18.8% (3-16) beyond the arc. UE also finished with its top rebounding advantage of the season at 42-25.
Next up for the Aces is a trip to former conference foe Xavier. The Musketeers and Aces meet for the first time since being in the MCC on Feb. 26, 1994. The schools have met 39 times overall and will face off on Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. ET.
