UE Departments of Theatre and Music Present Tony-Award Winning Musical, "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street"
|
|
UE Departments of Theatre and Music present Tony-Award winning musical, “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.”
Explore the dark side of the 10th-century English social system in this masterful musical thriller, which was a smashing success in its 1979 Broadway debut, garnering eight Tony Awards. Mad with revenge and angry at the world, Sweeney Todd teams up with his creepily resourceful neighbor, Mrs. Lovett, a widow whose pie shop flounders from lack of meat.
Roger McBain of the Evansville Courier & Press writes, “Austin Lauer ’14 anchors the show with his smoldering stage presence and clear, powerful vocals. Kelsey Miller ’14 provides an earthy, comic counterpoint as Mrs. Lovett, driven by both avarice and her longing for more than a business relationship with Todd.” Together the dark duo finds a way to meet both their needs, as they hauntingly plot to slice through London’s upper crust.
Sweeney Todd continues its run at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, November 21 through Saturday November 23, and at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 24, in Shanklin Theatre. Ticket prices are $17 for adults and $15 for senior adults, students and UE faculty. UE students may obtain one free student rush ticket beginning at noon on the day of the performance they wish to attend. Tickets may be purchased by calling (812) 488–2031, Monday through Friday, noon to 5 p.m.

UE Students to Perform in Professional Opera Production
|
|
This Saturday, University of Evansville students will share the stage with some of the nation’s leading opera singers in the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra’s production of Puccini’s Madame Butterfly.
The performance will take place at 7 p.m. Saturday, November 23 at the Victory Theatre in Downtown Evansville. Tickets start at $23 and may be purchased on the EPO’s website, www.evansvillephilharmonic.org.
Sung in Italian, with an English translation projected above the stage, Madame Butterfly features a full set from Asheville Lyric Opera in North Carolina and costumes from Union Avenue Opera in St. Louis. Four professional opera singers will perform the lead roles, with approximately 20 UE students and additional members of the Evansville Philharmonic Chorus rounding out the chorus.
“Performing in a professional production of Madame Butterfly, one of the world’s most beloved operas, is an incredibly meaningful opportunity for our students,” said Jon Truitt, associate professor of music and director of UE’s opera program, who staged the production of Madame Butterfly and will also perform a lead role.
“I’m so proud of the dedication and professionalism that students have displayed throughout the rehearsal process: working all semester to master the challenging music, then adding the elements of staging, guest artists, and a full orchestra,” Truitt added. “Saturday’s performance is sure to be unforgettable for both the performers and the audience.”
This weekend’s production of Madame Butterfly marks the first time in 10 years that the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra has brought a fully staged opera to the Victory Theatre. Madame Butterfly was the orchestra’s first fully staged operatic production, performed to sold-out houses in 1999, and returns this year in celebration of Maestro Alfred Savia’s 25th season with the EPO.
Madame Butterfly tells the story of a Japanese geisha who gives up everything she knows to marry an American naval officer. What results is a compelling clash of cultures, forcing the young bride to make an excruciating decision.
The University of Evansville wishes to thank the Alcoa Foundation, Friends of UE Music, and the William E. Schmidt Foundation for their support of this production.

Volleyball Set For Final Weekend Of Season
|
|
Five University of Evansville seniors will be honored this weekend as the Purple Aces volleyball will complete the 2013 season at the Carson Center with matches against Indiana State and Illinois State.
The Sycamores come to town for a 7 p.m. match on Friday before the Redbirds wrap up the season at 6 p.m. Saturday.
Katie Klages, Rachel TenHoor, Jenn Murphy, Lauren Seyller and Caitlin Wickes will be honored as part of the Senior Night festivities on Saturday.
As we enter the final week of the season, UE senior Rachel TenHoor is on the cusp of the most efficient offensive season in school history. For the year, TenHoor has hit .320 and is tied with Mary Greaney’s single season mark. She has posted 208 kills against just 46 errors in 506 attempts this year.
Earlier this month, Aces senior Katie Klages set the all-time UE mark for career digs, passing Julie Walroth’s mark of 2,095. For the season, she has 537 digs, which is the No. 7 tally in school history. Junior Ashley Ring has posted 1,128 attempts as she continues to rank amongst the top offensive forces in the league. Her total is tops in her career and is fifth in the UE single season record book. Next ahead of her is Julie Groves, who made 1,189 attempts in 2000. Last time out, she passed Brooke Maher’s total of 1,116, which was set in 2011.
Entering the weekend at 12-16 and 5-11 in the MVC is Indiana State. The battle for the final berth in the 2013 Missouri Valley Conference Tournament comes down to the final weekend and the Sycamores have not been eliminated from the chase although their quest was hindered by a loss to Northern Iowa Saturday. All three teams in the chase (Bradley,
Loyola and Indiana State) are on the road this weekend. The Sycamores need two wins, two Bradley losses and a split by Loyola to pick up the berth.
Illinois State has its spot in the tournament locked up at 17-11 and 10-6 in league play. Brooklyn Hlafka and LeighAnn Hranka were exceptional in their final home matches of their volleyball playing careers. Hranka knocked 19 kills on a .375 clip while also adding nine digs and six total blocks against UNI and Drake. Hlafka had 13 kills, seven digs and nine total blocks against the Panthers and Bulldogs.
