First Friday Forum @ 4: Faith and Faculty Presents Judaism
|
|
The Office of Academic Affairs and the Department of Religious Life are pleased to welcome Rabbi Gary Mazo, adjunct professor, Department of Philosophy and Religion, to the Faith and Faculty Forum series today - Friday, November 1 - at 4:00 p.m., Room 172, Schroeder Family School of Business Building.
Mazo is an ordained rabbi with more than 20 years of experience in the American Jewish community. He received his BA in Anthropology from Brandeis, then went to Hebrew Union College for his graduate and rabbinic studies. He was born in Massachusetts, raised in Connecticut, and spent the last 12 years on Cape Cod. The path leading him to Evansville and Temple Adath B’nai Israel has been a diverse one. After attending Brandeis University he went to the Hebrew Union College to become an ordained rabbi. He spent the first year of graduate school in Jerusalem and spent four additional years at the campus in Cincinnati, Ohio.
After his third year of graduate school, Mazo received a Masters in Hebrew Letters and after the fifth year of graduate school, he received his ordination degree. He spent the next 15 years serving congregations in New Jersey and Massachusetts. He wrote many articles for journals and for local papers and decided it was time to write a book. In 2000, Rising Star Press published his book “And the Flames Did Not Consume Us.”
Mazo left the pulpit in 2003 and started a small, non-profit Jewish educational center on Cape Cod. He also began, at that time, to write for three high-tech websites, reviewing the latest in technological gadgets and editing content on the site. He also became the executive director of a Jewish Day School near Boston, as well as an instructor for the University of Phoenix. He started a technical “how to” startup called Made Simple Learning. He published over 20 books and did lots of teaching about technology. That led to him becoming the senior editor of Mobile Nations, the number one network of sites for all things mobile.
Last year, as his youngest daughter was preparing to go off to college, he began the search for a new spiritual home – a congregation where he and his wife, Gloria, could renew their connection to organized Jewish life and which had the potential to feel like “home.” He and Gloria found Temple Adath B’nai Israel and never looked back. The couple has six children and one grandchild located from coast to coast. When Mazo has free time, he is an avid bike rider and piano and guitar player.
The monthly Faith and Faculty forum series provides an informal venue where UE faculty can present and offer reflections about their own faith traditions/religious practices and engage the University community in informal dialogue. Each forum lasts 50 minutes, 4:00 pm - 4:50 pm including time for Q & A.
By highlighting the religious diversity of our faculty, we aim to demonstrate the variety and richness of traditions represented on our campus. The forums will also encourage students and the campus community to widen their understanding of and respect for traditions different from their own.
As an institution affiliated with The United Methodist Church, we want to continually affirm our call to initiate and promote better relationships between Christians and people of other faiths based on informed understanding, critical appreciation, and balanced perspective. Interfaith discussions can make religion a bridge and not a barrier toward a peaceful world. The University of Evansville is committed to religious diversity and interfaith dialogue as we continue to serve an interconnected, global society.

Buddhist Monk and Teacher to Speak at UE
|
|
Arjia Rinpoche will be the featured Buddhist speaker on Tuesday, November 5 at 6:00 p.m., Eykamp 251, Ridgway University Center.
Rinpoche, a Mongolian High Lama (a highly respected Buddhist monk and teacher) established the charitable organization Tibetan Center for Compassion & Wisdom after immigrating to the United States in the late 1990s. In 2005, he was appointed by the 14th Dalai Lama to be director of the Tibetan Mongolian Buddhist Cultural Center in Bloomington, Indiana, and he continues to direct both programs today. He also authored, Surviving the Dragon, his personal account of 40 years of living under Chinese rule. All proceeds of his book are donated to support his charitable foundations.
In 2010, Rinpoche established the Center for Compassion & Wisdom in Mongolia. He also initiated a project to build the Cancer Center Treatment Center for Mongolian Children (CCTC) in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. Arjia Rinpoche began this project with his own funds, and the help of charitable people. Inspired by the teaching of the Buddha of Compassion, the CCTC aims to help children who are ravaged by cancer. All patients, no matter what their belief, will receive identical care and love.
Rinpoche says that it is important to realize that the children who now need to receive love and compassion from us will soon become our future and will be caring for us. Any generous deeds we do for our children today will bring incredible happiness, support, and comfort to them. All that matters is our pure intention to help those who cannot help themselves.

Roger Pieroni to be Featured Speaker at November Andiron Lecture
|
|
Roger Pieroni, associate professor of French and chair of the Department of Foreign Languages, will be the speaker at the Andiron Lecture on November 6. The event will be in Eykamp 252, Ridgway University Center. The lecture begins at 4 p.m. with a social gathering with beverages at 3:45 p.m.
Pieroni’s topic will be “Literary and Cultural Identities in the Vietnamese Francophone Novel.” In the fast developing field of francophone literature, the Vietnamese francophone novel, a corpus of texts written in French between the 1920s and the 1950s by Vietnamese writers in what was then called Indochina, has been the focus of much research in recent years. This lecture will examine literary heritages that these novelists explored to create an original Vietnamese literary genre. It will also examine the cultural/identity issues raised by colonial domination that was imposed upon the Vietnamese society. This presentation will focus on two novels: Nguyen Duc Giang’s Vingt ans, and Bà-Dâm by Albert de Teneuille and Truong Dinh Tri.
Pieroni completed his undergraduate degree at the Université Clermont II in France, and earned his master’s degree and PhD in French literature from Indiana University. He served as associate professor of French at Central College in Pella, Iowa, and as instructor of French at the University of Puerto Rico in Mayagüez. He holds certification with the American Translators Association as an English-French translator and does work for a number of translation companies and providers. Additionally, he has published a number of articles on francophone literature.

Cross Country Travels To MVC Championships
|
|
With the momentum gained from the Evansville Invitational two weeks ago, the Purple Aces have their sights set on a bigger prize – the Missouri Valley Conference Championship – this weekend.
Blank Park Golf Course on the south side of Des Moines will play host to the races on Saturday morning. The men take to the course at 10:30 a.m. for their 8K event before the women run their 5K race at 11:30 a.m. It will be a frigid morning as the low in the area on Saturday morning will be 35 with partly cloudy skies.
Kelby Jenkins is amongst the favorites on the women’s side. She is coming off of the best race of her senior career at the Evansville Invitational where she set the program 5K record. Jenkins ran a time of 17:27.27, topping Andrea Sonnenschein's mark that was set in 2007. Her old record was a 17:30. Jenkins was in front for the majority of the race, winning by a margin of 11 seconds over Lindsey Hinken of Western Kentucky.
In last year’s championship, Jenkins had a solid run, taking fourth place while setting a PR at the time with a 17:38.
Coming home in seventh place two weeks ago was Laurel Wolfe, who ran the first sub-19 minute 5K event of her collegiate career as she ran a time of 18:45.23. Just behind her was junior Nicole Kreuzman, who ran a PR of her own, conquering the course in a time of 19:13.64 to take 13th.
Josh Genet paced the men’s team last season, taking 12th place while running the top 8K time of his career. He finished the race in 24:58 for his best time at UE, a mark that is still the best of his career. In the home race two weeks ago, Genet took second place with a time of 25:39.09. He finished behind winner David Mokone of WKU, who paced the 70 runners with a time of 25:20.86. Genet has been the top male runner for UE in every event this season while recording a top 12 finish in five out of six outings thus far.
Freshman Ross Frondorf set a PR at the Evansville Invitational, finishing in 14th with a time of 26:48.55, topping his previous best by ten seconds. He was followed by Jon Ashby, Ben Woolems and Kyle Wilson. Wilson set a PR with a 27:56.62.
