Notice to UE Community Artists and Crafters
|
|
Exciting news! Attention UE community artists and crafters; This year the Department of Art is planning a Handcrafted Wreath Exhibition to run in conjunction with the Annual UE Art and Craft Christmas Sale. Both events will be held in the Melvin Peterson Gallery, on the corner of Lincoln and Weinbach Avenues. Participation is open to both the UE community and all area artists and crafters. Please invite your creative family and friends to participate.
The Wreath Exhibition, will open on December 2 and run through December 13. All categories of art are eligible. A wreath is defined as a circular band of flowers, foliage or any decorative work created for decorative, celebratory or memorial purposes. Your handcrafted wreath only needs to be circular. It does not need to be holiday themed. It could be painted, hammered, or glued, large or small, traditional or non-traditional. You may offer your wreath for sale, but are not required to do so. We are looking forward to seeing a variety of creative responses to the Wreath theme!
Entries for the Wreath Exhibition will be accepted on Thursday and Friday, November 21stand 22nd in either the Peterson Gallery during normal hours of 12:00 PM to 6PM on Thursday and 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM on Friday or in the Art Office, Krannert Hall of Fine Arts, Room 212, from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM.
The Annual Art and Craft Sale will take place in the Melvin Peterson Gallery on Thursday December 5 from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. You do not need to be present in order to sell your work. All artists and crafters wanting to participate can deliver their items for sale to the Peterson Gallery during the regularly scheduled hours of 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 4.
Again, anyone in the UE community who creates art & crafts is invited to participate in these events. This includes spouses, children, relatives and friends.
Members of the UE Friends of Art and other volunteers will be manning the sale so it is not necessary for sale participants to stay in the Peterson Gallery with their work.
To enter work in the Christmas Exhibition, to register as a participant for the Art and Craft Sale or for more information, please stop the Department of Art Office or phone at 488-2043. (A sample of work may be requested prior to inclusion as a participant in either event.)

New Risk Management Initiative for use of Motor Coach Transportation
|
|
It is important that you be provided information regarding a new risk management initiative being used by UE this academic year involving motor coach (bus) transportation.
Several departments are currently using or transitioning to the use of motor coach transportation that is approved by TSX (Transportation Safety Exchange). This company takes the necessary steps to identify and recognize the “safe” motor coach service providers. TSX has been endorsed by our insurance consortium, EIIA (Educational and Institutional Insurance Administrators) which provides services to approximately 125 institutions across the United States. By being a member of EIIA, UE can utilize this service at no cost to your department or the University.
It is in UE’s best interest for the safety of our students, employees, alumni, donors and volunteers that UE begin using TSX approved motor coach carriers. For trip transportation originating from Evansville, New Image Travel is already a local TSX approved provider. If a UE group participating in a program from your area would be flying to an out of town destination and engaging a motor coach provider, we want to utilize a TSX approved provider as well.
Thus, if you are planning a trip or have questions, please contact Anne Dale (ad58 or ext. 2011) and she will be able to assist you.

Spring Semester Housing Cancellation Deadline is Approaching
|
|
Students may cancel their UE housing contract without penalty for the Spring Semester if you will be:
- Attending Harlaxton or Studying Abroad
- Having an internship, co-op, or clinical outside of the Evansville area
- Moving into a fraternity house
- Transferring, withdrawing, or graduating
The deadline to cancel UE housing contracts for the spring semester, for reasons listed above, 5:00 pm, November 1.
Requests not falling in the above categories are typically not granted. Requests to move off campus to live with friends or move into an apartment are not sufficient reasons to cancel a UE housing contract. Entering into any other housing agreement or lease with a private landlord will have no effect upon the conditions of your contract with the University of Evansville.
Cancellation requests can be made in the Office of Residence Life.

Native Dakota Hymn Tunes
|
|
Clark Kimberling, professor of mathematics, has a research article, "Four Dakota Hymn Tunes," in The Hymn, published by The Hymn Society in the United States and Canada. Based on a session Kimberling led at the 2012 convention of the Hymn Society at the University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Canada, the article describes the historical significance of four Native-composed melodies set to Dakota-language poems, as printed by missionaries who helped create written Dakota language beginning in the 1830s. One of the four tunes, named "Lacquiparle," is well known. You can find it at no. 148 in the United Methodist Hymnal in Neu Chapel.

Paul Parkison Publishes Manuscript
|
|
Associate Professor and Chair of the School of Education Paul Parkison, published a manuscript in the journal Curriculum and Teaching Dialogue. The manuscript titled "Teacher Identity and Curriculum: Space for Dissent" investigates the potential for authentic identify formation in the current schooling climate.
ABSTRACT: "Within a depersonalized and technocratic schooling system, teachers face an oppressive system that does not permit authentic identity formation. Reconceptualizaiotn of discursive and relationship driven processes that should inform curriculum development and instruction has transformative potential for education and the schooling experience. Democratic discourse resulting in a 'fusion of horizons' between the need for responsive and inclusive curricula and the political push for standardization could be achieved through dialogically reconfigured and relationship driven curriculum development."
