“The University of Evansville has always encouraged employees to give back to the Evansville community. I have been involved in many philanthropic endeavors since I have been employed at UE, but the organization that I enjoy the most is United Way. Not only are you able to designate where your money goes, you are also able to see many of the transformative changes that take place in those organizations. For example, the Day of Caring gives volunteers the chance to roll up their sleeves and assist with cleaning, painting, and landscaping projects that change the physical appearance of the buildings and grounds, but more importantly, it provides an opportunity for those same volunteers to touch the hearts and lives of those who live, work, learn, and play at these facilities. I support United Way, and it truly makes me feel wonderful inside.”

Andiron Lecture - The Medieval Islamic World and China by Anya King
|
|
Anya King, assistant professor of history at the University of Southern Indiana, will be the speaker at the Andiron Lecture set for October 2. The lecture will start at 4:00 p.m., in Eykamp 252, Ridgway University Center. A social gathering with beverages will precede the lecture at 3:45 p.m.
King’s topic will be “The Medieval Islamic World and China.”
The medieval Islamic world had an eastern frontier as well as the much better known frontier with Europe. This lecture will discuss medieval Islamic contact with China. When Islam arose in 7th century Arabia, China was unified under the powerful Tang dynasty. Merchants from the Middle East were keen to acquire precious goods including commodities from China. Merchants traveled to China both by land and by sea across the Indian Ocean. They brought back silks, porcelain, lacquerware, perfumes, and spices. China had a reputation as a land of highly skilled artisans and just government, intriguing generations of Islamic scholars.
King was born in Dayton, Ohio, and graduated summa cum laude from Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio, with majors in classics, art history, and history. She did her graduate work at Indiana University, Bloomington, from which she has a double major PhD in Central Eurasian studies and Near Eastern languages and cultures.
King offers courses at USI on Middle Eastern and Asian history. Her research focuses on the cultural and commercial interactions between the medieval Middle East and Central and East Asia. She is particularly interested in the subject of trade in goods of pharmacy and perfumery as well as Islamic geographical and travel literature. Her publications include “Tibetan Musk and Medieval Arab Perfumery,” “Some 10th Century Material on Asian Toponymy from Sahlan b. Kaysan,” “The Importance of Imported Aromatics in Arabian Culture: Illustrations from Pre-Islamic and Early Islamic Poetry,” and the forthcoming “Early Islamic Sources on the Kitan Liao: The Role of Trade.” She has recently completed a book manuscript, Scent from the Garden of Paradise: Musk and the Medieval Islamic World, and is currently working on her next book manuscript entitled Medieval Islamic Perfumery.
For further information, call the series coordinator M. Christine Mohn at 812-488-2585 or the College of Arts and Sciences at 812-488-2589.
