YOU Can Make an IMPACT! Here's How
|
|
It is an exciting time at the University of Evansville as we explore the many ways we IMPACT the lives of our students and the community – near and far. Each of us has the opportunity to shape how we demonstrate our UE mission to the world. Among other things, you can share ideas for new projects or new ways to do existing ones, offer constructive criticism, compliment the work of a co-worker, etc. A new process has been implemented to make it easy for you to do that. It’s called Meaningful Connections and we promise, this is not your grandma’s suggestion box! Just follow these easy steps: 1) Go to https://webadvisor.evansville.edu. 2) Select either Students or Employees menu option. 3) Under “Meaningful Connections”, select Make an IMPACT – Share Your Ideas 4) Select the category for your impact (they are self explanatory and if all else fails, choose “other”). 5) Give a description of your suggestion, compliment, or opportunity for improvement (you can even include electronic artwork, pictures, or documents). 6) You will receive a Thank You splash screen acknowledging your Meaningful Connection was successfully entered into the system and it will be forwarded to the appropriate Vice President for review and follow up.

New Interfaith Initiative Looks at Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on September 6
|
|
The Office of Academic Affairs and the Department of Religious Life are collaborating on a new interfaith initiative this fall, First Friday Forum @ 4: Faith and Faculty. The monthly forum will provide an informal venue where UE faculty can present and offer reflections about their own faith traditions/religious practices and engage the University community in informal dialogue. Each forum will last 50 minutes, 4:00 pm - 4:50 pm including time for Q & A. Forums will be held in Room 172, Schroeder Family School of Business Building
On Friday, September 6, "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints: Mormonism," will be presented by Dr. Ryan Kiggins and Dr. Mark Kopta.
By highlighting the religious diversity of our faculty, we aim to demonstrate the variety and richness of traditions represented on our campus. The forums will also encourage students and the campus community to widen their understanding of and respect for traditions different from their own.
As an institution affiliated with The United Methodist Church, we want to continually affirm our call to initiate and promote better relationships between Christians and people of other faiths based on informed understanding, critical appreciation, and balanced perspective. Interfaith discussions can make religion a bridge and not a barrier toward a peaceful world. The University of Evansville is committed to religious diversity and interfaith dialogue as we continue to serve an interconnected, global society.
Visiting Assistant Professor of Political Science Ryan Kiggins is trained in the fields of International Relations and political theory with research and teaching interests in theories of international relations, cyber security, internet governance, American foreign policy, and international political economy.
Kiggins received his Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Florida in December 2011 and has held academic appointments as Visiting Assistant Professor at Williams College during the 2012-13 academic year and the University of Louisiana at Lafayette during the 2011-12 academic year. Kiggins’ research has been accepted for publication in the peer-reviewed journal International Studies Perspectives, and in peer-reviewed edited volumes published by the University of Minnesota Press, Ashgate, and Springer-Verlag. In addition, local ABC and CBS affiliates in Lafayette, Louisiana have relied on Kiggins’ expertise during news reports on international political events including the Arab Spring and the overthrow of Mummar Kaddafi. Kiggins is also a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
Professor of Psychology Mark Kopta is an internationally recognized expert in psychotherapy and mental health research. He is also founder/executive director of the CelestHealth Research Group. CHRG has research centers at Johns Hopkins University, Marquette University, University of Louisville, and University of Trier in Germany. Kopta has served as a mental health consultant and contributor for ABC News. His research and comments have been featured on network news and public television as well as in a variety of magazines and newspapers, as examples, USA Today; U.S. News & World Report; Huffington Post, Forbes, Der Spiegel, the European news magazine; and Corriere Salute, the Italian news magazine. Kopta is also a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

Topic of September Andiron Lecture - Talking to Molecules with Lasers
|
|
The next University of Evansville Andiron Lecture is set for Wednesday, September 4 at 4:00 p.m.in Eykamp 252, Ridgway University Center A social gathering with beverages begins at 3:45 p.m.
Professor of Chemistry Bryan Lynch will be the guest speaker. His topic: "Talking to Molecules with Lasers: A Sabbatical at MIT."
For some 50 years, scientists have used lasers in their efforts to understand the complex behavior of molecules. Some molecules readily reveal their secrets while others adamantly refuse to do so. This lecture will explore the lengths to which scientists go to “talk” to molecules within a laser experiment; it will also examine the types of behavior observed and their importance to chemists and to society in general.
Lynch earned both BS and PhD degrees in chemistry from the University of Pittsburgh, and completed his postdoctoral training in magnetic resonance at Cornell University. Since 1994, he has taught courses in both general and physical chemistry at the University of Evansville.
In 2001, he received the Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Chemical Research, presented by the Department of Chemistry at Indiana University. In 2009, he was awarded the University of Evansville Sydney and Sadelle Berger Award for Scholarly Activity and the Dean’s Outstanding Teaching Award. His research interest is the study of the structure and energetics of small molecules using laser spectroscopy. He has completed two sabbaticals in this field of research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
For further information, call the series coordinator M. Christine Mohn at 812-488-2585 or the College of Arts and Sciences at 812-488-2589.

Kimberling's Encyclopedia of Triangle Centers Highly Recommended by American Library Association
|
|
Clark Kimberling, professor of mathematics, has a website recently ranked in the Highly Recommended category by the American Library Association. The site, called Encyclopedia of Triangle Centers (ETC) started at UE in 2000 as an extension of Dr. Kimberling's book, Triangle Centers and Central Triangles. ETC presently described more than 5000 special geometric points. The first four are the ancient Greek centers (centroid, incenter, circumcenter, orthocenter) and many of the others have been discovered by geometers around the world since 2000.
The Highly Recommended status comes at the conclusion of a Choice Card, sent by the American Library Association to thousands of academic libraries. You can read about ETC at Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Encyclopedia_of_Triangle_Centers) or download it from http://faculty.evansville.edu/ck6/encyclopedia/ETC.html. The international impact of ETC stems from worldwide interest in geometry; during the past 12 months, new entries in ETC have come from England, Japan, Poland, France, Spain, Greece, China, Venezuela, Russia, Germany, and the U.S.
