* UE Announces John MacCauley, Jr. Memorial Scholarship for Veterans

In memory of beloved Purple Aces announcer and 1974 graduate John MacCauley, Jr., the University of Evansville has created a new scholarship for military veterans and invites contributions to the endowed fund.

Established by MacCauley’s friends and fellow veterans, the John MacCauley, Jr. Memorial Scholarship for Veterans will give financial support to post-9/11 veterans in all branches of the military who attend the University of Evansville. The scholarship will support UE’s contributions to the Yellow Ribbon program, which offers free tuition to qualifying post-9/11 military veterans.

In August 2012, MacCauley, a Marine Corps veteran, died of a heart attack before he could fulfill his longtime goal of establishing a scholarship for veterans. After his death, his close friends Guy and Linda Banta, Dave and Julie Binnix, David and Lauren Jones, Herschel and Marian Purdue, and Bob and Mary Tiemann joined together to make his dream a reality.

On a recent University of Evansville alumni cruise to Alaska, Mary MacCauley, John’s widow, was surprised with a plaque commemorating the scholarship. (John had planned the cruise before his death; in addition to serving as the Purple Aces’ men’s basketball announcer and president of the Purple Aces Club, he also was a travel agent and planned many UE-related trips.)

To contribute to the scholarship fund, visit www.evansville.edu/give (in the drop-down menu, select John MacCauley, Jr. Memorial Scholarship for Veterans), or mail your gift to Catherine Renner, assistant director of gift planning and capital support, University of Evansville, 1800 Lincoln Avenue, Evansville, IN 47722.

* Quinn Vilneff Named Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar

– Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholars for Divisions I, II and the NAIA have been announced by the GCAA. A total of 152 players in Division I, 57 in Division II and 18 in NAIA earned the honor.  University of Evansville men’s golfer Quinn Vilneff earned a spot on the list on the strength of his efforts over the course of his collegiate career.

To be eligible for Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar status an individual must be a junior or senior academically, compete in at least three full years at the collegiate level, participate in 50-percent of his team’s competitive rounds or compete in the NCAA Championships, have a stroke-average under 76.0 in Division I, 78.0 in Division II, 77.0 in NAIA and 79.0 in Division III, and maintain a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.2. A recipient must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at his college or university.

In his junior campaign at UE, Vilneff posted the second-lowest average on the squad with a 75.70.  After averaging 76.31 strokes per round in the fall of 2012, he stormed through the spring with a 75.14 average to go along with four top ten finishes.  At the Benbow Invitational, he tied for tenth with a 5-over 147 before tying for third place at the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate.

The native of Amherstburg, Ontario finished second behind teammate Alex Turner at the UE/Butler Challenge before making his presence known at the MVC Championship.  Following rounds of 73 and 77 to open up the championship, he shot a season-low 68 in the final round to finish in sixth place.  His performance, coupled with a 3.941 GPA, helped him to earn the Elite 18 Award, which is given to the student-athlete with the top GPA who finished in the top 18 of the tournament.   Vilneff was also named an All-Conference golfer and earned a berth on the MVC Scholar-Athlete Team.

Vilneff’s honor is the eighth for the Purple Aces since 2006.  Others who have received recognition include: Chris Bouchard (twice), Matt Hunsaker, Michael Sainz (twice) and Griffin Wood (twice).  Sainz and Wood received the award in 2012.

* 2013 Cross Country Slate Unveiled

Six regular-season races await the University of Evansville cross country squads as they are amidst their preparations for the 2013 campaign.

Both teams enjoyed great success last season and look to build on that heading into 2013.  Paced by Kelby Jenkins, the women’s team won a pair of team events (Tennessee Tech Invitational and UE Invitational) while the men were also victorious at Tennessee Tech.

“Every meet that we have on the schedule will have ranked teams entered. This is one of the most competitive schedules I have ever put together,” head coach Don Walters said.  “We have been getting better every year and now we are invited because of the competition. I have turned down invitations from Furhman University, TN, Vanderbilt, and others schools with ranked programs.”

“If we can stay healthy this will be one of the most exciting seasons in school history,” Walters added.

The season officially opens on August 31 with the Mid-America Opener set to take place at the UE Cross Country Course.  Last season, both UE teams took second place in the event.  Evansville takes to the road for the first time a week later, running in the Eastern Illinois Invitational on Sept. 6 in Charleston, Ill.

Third up for the Aces will be a trip to Huntsville, Alabama for the Fleet Foot Invitational.  The University of Alabama in Huntsville will play host to the event on Sept. 14.  The next two races will be the largest events of the season for UE, beginning on Sept. 20 with the Indiana Intercollegiate in Bloomington.  In the 2012 race, both teams performed very well with the women taking seventh out of 26 teams while the men posted a 9th place finish out of 27 schools.

On Oct. 5, Evansville will make the trek to Louisville for the Greater Louisville Classic.  Both the men’s and women’s teams faced over 300 runners in each race of the event last season with the women taking 11th in the Blue race (out of 43 teams) while the men placed 13th out of 46.  The annual UE Invitational completes the regular season, beginning at 11 a.m. on Oct. 19.

The MVC Championships will be held in Des Moines, Iowa on Nov. 2 with the NCAA Districts slated to take place in Madison, Wisc. on Nov. 15 and the NCAA Championship will be eight days later in nearby Terre Haute.

Evansville’s men and women each have solid goals heading into 2013, led on the women’s side by Kelby Jenkins.  Jenkins won four races a season ago and capped off her junior season by breaking UE’s 6K mark at the NCAA’s by running a 21:11.  The previous best time for the Aces was a 22:02 set by Andrea Sonnenschein.  She recorded finishes of seventh or better in all but one race.

Last season, Cody Stein was the top student-athlete for the men as he took the win at Tennessee Tech and registered three other top six finishes.  Taking his spot at the head of the team looks to be junior Josh Genet.  As a sophomore, Genet took top honors in the UE Invitational before leading the Aces with a PR at the MVC Championships as his 24:58 was good for 12th place.

* UE Swimming And Diving Teams Earn Academic Accolade

The College Swim Coaches Association of America recognized its NCAA All-Academic Teams and the University of Evansville men’s and women’s swimming teams were both recognized on the list.

Under the leadership of head coach Rickey Perkins, the women’s swimming team boasted a GPA of 3.53 last season while the men also made the list with a cumulative GPA of 3.15.

“I am completely humbled and proud to be surrounded by such high quality people and student-athletes,” Perkins said.  “These teams strive to be their very best academically and athletically every day.  To be ranked with some the best schools in the country is an honor.”

The women finished in a tie for 11th in NCAA Division I with their efforts while the men were tied for 40th on the strength of their performance in the classroom.

UE’s women were led by Mackenzie Powell’s 3.96 GPA.  Powell was one of 12 females named to the Missouri Valley Conference Swimming and Diving Scholar-Athlete Team in 2013.  Four other Aces (Melissa Ball, Jill Enge, Abigail Yenzer and Jordan Van Wyk) joined Powell in being named Scholar-Athletes with GPA’s over 3.8.

Kyle Tiemann earned a berth on the Men’s Swimming and Diving All-MAC Team with his 3.47 GPA.  Eighteen male swimmers were named to the team in April.
