University of Evansville Professor Emeritus Ray William Arensman '43 of Evansville, passed away Friday, June 28, at his home. He was 91.
In remembrance of Dr. Arensman, University flags will be flown at half-mast Tuesday, July 2. The funeral procession will pass through Sesquicentennial Oval drive at approximately 2:15 p.m. Family of Dr. Arensman will gather outside Olmsted Hall as the carillon bells play the Hymn to Evansville. The entire funeral procession will then pass through the Sesquicentennial Oval drive.

Dr. Arensman was born October 14, 1921, in Huntingburg, Indiana. He received his bachelor's degree from Evansville College (as the University of Evansville was then known) and underwent Naval training at Columbia University prior to serving from 1943 to 1946. Dr. Arensman was a lieutenant on a destroyer escort. He married Helen Mae Lukemeyer in 1946.
Dr. Arensman taught at Salem High School before earning his Master of Science and Doctor of Education degrees from Indiana University. He was an assistant professor of business education at IU until 1958, when he left to become head of the Department of Business Administration and Economics at Evansville College.
Dr. Arensman eventually became UE’s Dean of the School of Business, was named Outstanding Teacher in 1976 and had numerous appointments to boards including Miller Block, People's Savings and Credit Thrift.
He loved music of all kinds, played in five bands and founded the big band, The Temple Airs. This group participated in fundraising for not-for-profits in excess of four million dollars.
Dr. Arensman's community leadership was honored by the Rotary Civic Award by the Evansville Rotary Club in 2006.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Helen Mae Arensman, of Evansville; daughter, Ann Rice (Dr. Patrick Rice), of Cranbrook, B.C. Canada; son, Dr. Frederick Arensman (Barbara), of Louisville, Ky.; grandson, Drew Rice (Cara), of Vancouver, B.C .Canada; granddaughters, Dr. Amy Doetsch (Dr. Alex Doetsch), of Twin Falls, Idaho, Dr. Allison Arensman, of Hanover, N.H., and Emily Arensman, of New York, N.Y.; great-grandchildren, Clara and Morgan Doetsch and Olin and Marlow Rice.
Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 2, at the Methodist Temple, 2109 Lincoln Avenue, officiated by Rev. Stephen Beutler, with burial in Fairmount Cemetery in Huntingburg, Indiana. Friends may visit Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Alexander East Chapel and Tuesday from noon until service time at the church.
