UNI Rallies Past Evansville, 2-1, In MVC Softball Championship Game
|
|
The fourth-seeded University of Northern Iowa softball team rallied for two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to rally past the seventh-seeded University of Evansville Purple Aces, 2-1, on Saturday in the 2013 Missouri Valley Conference Tournament Championship game at the C.U. Sports Complex in Omaha, Nebraska.
“Our kids battled in every game throughout this tournament and they played to the best of their ability,” said head coach Mark Redburn. “In a MVC championship game like this, there are key hits that can occur at any time and in our case, there were two really good pitchers that battled back and forth throughout the entire game.”
Evansville took an early 1-0 lead in the third inning thanks to back-to-back one-out singles by sophomore outfielder #Victoria Dellorto# and senior first baseman #Kendall Kautz# and an error by the Panthers. UE senior pitcher Sarah Patterson (16-11) would keep the score 1-0 until the sixth inning, when the Panthers were able to rally.
UNI second baseman Julia Hunter opened the sixth inning with a single off of the wall in left field. After a sacrifice bunt moved Hunter to second base, UNI shortstop Caitlin Wnek followed with a single up the middle to put runners on the corners with one out.
Patterson would get UNI outfielder Micalla Rettinger to fly out for the second out of the inning, before issuing a walk to clean-up batter Gina Brown to load the bases. It looked like Patterson would work out of the jam, jumping ahead of UNI right-fielder Kristin Lock 1-2 in the count, but an RBI single and error off of the bat of Lock would score two runs to give the Panthers a 2-1 lead.
UNI junior pitcher Jamie Fisher (21-13) would retire the Purple Aces in order in the top of the seventh inning to preserve the victory en route to earning MVC Tournament Most Valuable Player honors for the Panthers. Patterson, senior outfielder Tamara Robey and sophomore outfielder Kayla Fortner would earn MVC All-Tournament team honors for UE, as the seventh-seeded Purple Aces went 3-1 in tournament play.
“These kids have really uplifted this program and have taken it to a different level,” said Redburn. “They certainly do not have anything to hang their heads about.”
In Saturday’s final, Robey paced the Evansville offense by going 2-for-4 at the plate, while Dellorto, Kautz and junior shortstop Kacey Rogers pounded out Evansville’s three other hits on the day. Patterson suffered the tough-luck loss, giving up two runs on six hits in 6.0 innings of work, striking out four. Fisher earned the victory for UNI by tossing her third complete-game victory of the tournament, allowing an unearned run on five base hits and four walks, while striking out five.
With the victory, Northern Iowa improves to 26-24 on the season, and will represent the Missouri Valley Conference in the 2013 NCAA Softball Tournament. Evansville, meanwhile, sees its 2013 season come to a close with a 23-30 overall record.

UE Baseball Drops MVC Finale to Illinois State, 14-4
|
|
The University of Evansville baseball team finished its Missouri Valley Conference schedule with an even 10-10 record, as the Purple Aces fell, 14-14, in seven innings to Illinois State Sunday afternoon in their MVC finale at Duffy Bass Field.
Redshirt sophomore Kevin Kaczmarski paced Evansville (21-31, 10-10 MVC) offensively by going 3-for-3 with a two-run home run, his team-leading fifth of the season. Senior Jason Hockemeyer also homered for the Aces to highlight a 2-for-3 effort.
Sophomore starter Kyle Freeland suffered the loss on the mound and fell to 3-8 on the season, as he allowed eight runs, all earned, on 10 hits and struck out four, while walking two in 5.0 innings of work.
UE threatened in the top of the first by putting runners on the corners with just one out, but Illinois State (33-18, 13-5 MVC) turned one of its four double plays on the afternoon to get out of the jam.
The Redbirds then scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the second to take an early 2-0 lead. Kyle Stanton drew a one-out walk to start the inning and Mike Hollenbeck followed with a single to center. After a wild pitch that moved both runners up 90 feet to second and third, Brock Stewart drove them both in with a hard single back up the middle.
Evansville answered with a three-run top of the third that including a pair of long balls. Kaczmarski followed with one-out single by Andy Lasher with a two-run blast to right center, before Hockemeyer gave the Aces a 3-2 lead two batters later with a solo shot to left center.
UE’s lead was short lived, as the Redbirds responded by scoring five runs in the bottom of the inning to open up a 7-3 advantage. Zac Johnson tied the game with an RBI double to shallow center, before Eric Aguilera put ISU back in front, 5-3, with a two-run single through the left side. Stewart, who finished the game with five RBI, capped the rally with a two-run single to right.
In the top of the fifth, Evansville was able to load the bases with no outs, but the Illinois State defense came through with another double play to limit the damage to just one run, as Nick Hathcoat was able to score, when Pearson grounded into a 6-4-3 twin killing to make the score 7-4.
Stewart once again came through for the Redbirds with a one-out single to plate a run in the bottom of the fifth, before ISU put the game away by exploding for six runs on six hits in the bottom of the seventh to put the 10-run rule into effect for the second-straight game.
Brad Sorkin allowed four runs, all earned, on six hits and four walks in 6.1 innings to earn the win on the mound for Illinois State. The Redbirds’ four through seven hitters combined to go 12-for-15 with 10 RBI.
Evansville will look to rebound Tuesday night, when it hosts Western Kentucky in its 2013 home finale. The first pitch is slated for 6 p.m.
