Bradley Prevents Aces Softball Sweep
|
|
Aces softball fell to Bradley in today’s series finale as the Braves secured the victory over UE in six innings, 11-3.
Evansville tallied five hits on the day while notching one double, three RBIs, four walks, and one sacrifice fly. Four different players went 1-for-2 on the day for the Aces as senior Alicia Betancur grabbed a double and an RBI.
UE softball will be back on the field next at Cooper Stadium as they continue Valley play against Southern Illinois on Wednesday, April 17, for a doubleheader beginning at 3:00 p.m. CST.
Game Recap: Bradley 11, UE 3
The Braves took an early 1-0 lead as a steal to home put Bradley on top in the top of the first. With a solo home run to center field, the Braves notched another run on the board and advanced their lead further to 2-0 in the second.
Evansville answered back in the bottom of the second inning with a run of its own as a double by Betancur sent a runner to home plate and made it a 2-1 game.
With the bases loaded in the top of the third and just one out, an RBI single to left field allowed Bradley to tack on another run as they continued over UE, 3-1. As a throwing error by Evansville sent a runner to home plate, a double to left field produced a pair of runs for the Braves and expanded their lead, 6-1.
Freshman reliever Sarah Baldwin took over for senior starter Sarah Patterson in the third as Baldwin worked her way out of the inning for the Aces after a fly out to left field capped off the top of the inning.
After a scoreless fourth frame, Bradley added another run to the board in the fifth after they moved up, 7-1, over the UE with an RBI single to the shortstop.
The Aces were able to manufacture a pair of runs in the bottom half of the fifth with a bases loaded RBI single by senior Kendall Kautz and a sacrifice fly to left field by senior Halie Malone that made it a 7-3 game heading into the sixth.
As pitcher Emily Morris came in for Baldwin in the top of the sixth with one out and the bases loaded, Bradley was able to capitalize on a throwing error by Evansville and send two runners to home and expand the lead, 9-3. With a runner on second and third, the Braves notched a double to left field and sent two more runners to score as Bradley moved further on the Aces, 11-3. The Aces were able to snag a double play to end the inning as they headed to the bottom half of the sixth.
With a pair of strikeouts and a ground out, UE came up short as the Braves ended the inning and the game with an 11-3 victory over the Aces, preventing the sweep.
Bradley pitcher Madeline Lynch-Crumrine took the win for the Braves as she improved to 13-9 on the season while pitching a complete 6.0 innings. Lynch-Crumrine allowed three runs while striking out four.
UE pitcher Patterson, now 10-7, took the loss for the Aces as she struck out one in 2.2 innings in the circle. Baldwin saw 2.2 innings as she struck out one and allowed three runs.

Crafton also notched a 77 on Sunday to check in with a 244. She posted a 79 in the opening round of play on Saturday before stumbling to an 88 in the second round. Crafton recovered on Sunday as she was the only Ace to finish with two sub-80 rounds in the tournament.

Aces Fall to Xavier, 4-3, on Seventh-Inning Homer
|
|
The University of Evansville baseball team was swept by visiting Xavier Sunday afternoon at Braun Stadium, as the Musketeers captured the series finale, 4-3. Daniel Rod provided the game-winning hit for XU with a three-run homer in the seventh.
“We got a great start today from Josh Biggs,” head coach Wes Carroll said. “We have been struggling on Sunday, but he grabbed the ball as a senior and really gave us a chance. He gave us a great effort that we kind of squandered away. He earned that for us and we let him down by letting a good, quality ball club hang around.”
Four Evansville (14-23) players tallied multiple hits in the ballgame, as senior Jason Hockemeyer led the Aces’ offensive effort by going 2-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and an RBI. Senior Chris Pearson and sophomore Kyle Pollock each finished 2-for-4 with a walk, while redshirt sophomore Kevin Kaczmarski went 2-for-5 with a run scored.
UE starter Josh Biggs (0-1) threw 6.1 solid innings, but suffered the loss as a pair of runners he was responsible for scored when Cole Isom gave up the decisive three-run homer to Rod in the seventh. Biggs allowed three runs, all earned, on seven hits and struck out five. Tyler Koors (4-3) earned the victory for Xavier (18-15), allowing three runs, two earned, on 10 hits and recorded four strikeouts in 7.0 innings.
“We left a lot of runners on base early and throughout the game and all it took was one swing of the bat to swing momentum and put the win in their dugout,” Carroll said.
Evansville grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on an RBI ground out from Hockemeyer and doubled its advantage in the third, when redshirst junior Johnny Day doubled to left center to score Hockemeyer from first.
The Aces looked like they would opened up their lead in the bottom of the fourth, as they loaded the bases with two outs, but XU left fielder Vinny Nittoli made a diving grab on a hard liner to take away extra bases from Hockemeyer and end the inning.
The Musketeers got a run back in their half of the fifth to cut the Aces’ lead to 2-1. Joe Forney singled through the right side to start the inning and advanced to third on a pair of ground outs, before scoring on Stephen Schoettmer’s two-out, RBI single back up the middle.
In the top of the seventh, Biggs retired the leadoff hitter with his fifth strikeout of the afternoon, but issued a one-out walk to Daniel Rizzie and surrendered a single to Schoettmer to bring Isom out of the bullpen. On the second pitch from Isom, Rod emptied the bases by clearing the fence in left to put Xavier in front, 4-2.
UE got a run back in the bottom of the inning, when Hockemeyer dumped a one-out single into right, before advancing to third on a wild pitch and a throwing error. The senior outfielder was able to cross the plate, when Koors delivered yet another wild pitch, making the score 4-3.
Reliever Jake Naumann tossed a pair of scoreless innings in the eighth and ninth to keep Evansville within a run.
In the bottom of the ninth, Pearson led off the inning with a double to shallow right, but was gunned down at the plate for the first out of the frame, when he tried to score the tying run on Hockemeyer’s single to right. Hockemeyer advanced into scoring position on the throw to the plate to retire Pearson, but he was remain there, as Xavier closer Alex Vice struck out Day and got Pollock to fly out to right to end the ballgame.
The two teams combined to strand 18 runners on the base paths, as the Aces left 11 runners aboard and the Musketeers seven.
UE will look to get back in the win column Tuesday night, when it hosts Austin Peay for a 6 p.m. game at Braun Stadium.
