* Andiron Lecture: Is Music the Universal Language?

For the next University of Evansville Andiron Lecture, Alfred Savia will present "Is Music the Universal Language?" The lecture will begin at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 3 in Eykamp Hall, Room 252, Ridgway University Center. A social gathering with beverages begins at 3:45 p.m.

Savia is in his 24th season as music director and conductor of the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra, an ensemble that is recognized nationally as one of the best regional orchestras in the United States. He has overseen considerable artistic growth in his years leading the Evansville Philharmonic, including the formation of a two-tiered youth orchestra program, the establishment of the Eykamp String Quartet (a full-time quartet and ensemble-in-residence at UE), and annual presentations of Handel’s Messiah and Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker. He continues to guest conduct orchestras in the United States and in other parts of the world on a regular basis. In recent years, he has conducted extensively in South America. He continues to regularly conduct the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra where he had previously served as associate conductor for six seasons.

Music is said to be the “universal language.” What exactly does that mean? How do we communicate through music? In this lecture, Alfred Savia will explore the universality of music through his personal experience, from making music with chamber ensembles of only a few members to interacting with large orchestral/choral forces of over 200 people on one stage. There must be a connecting thread when making music, whether between four musicians in a string quartet or among a huge orchestra playing a Mahler symphony. How, then, do these musicians communicate the message of the composer to the audience, from a small soirée in a home to a large performance in a concert hall of up to 2,000? Maestro Savia will explore, through his personal experiences, the unspoken communication between conductor and orchestra and the challenges of conducting in countries around the world, where music is the only language of communication between conductor and orchestra.

* Aces Softball Splits in Doubleheader with Murray State

Aces softball split in its doubleheader against Murray State as Evansville defeated the Racers, 3-0, in the first game and was unable to sweep with a 6-3 loss in the second.

Sophomores Kayla Fortner and Victoria Dellorto led the Aces at the plate today as both went 2-for-5 at bat. Fortner tabbed two RBIs and one sacrifice fly as Dellorto grabbed a triple and one run. Evansville’s offense rallied for nine total hits, one triple, four RBIs, five walks, and went 8-for-9 in stolen bases.

UE will take to the road this weekend as they head back into Valley play for a three-game series at Wichita State. The Aces will play a doubleheader on Friday, March 29, beginning at 2:00 p.m. CST before they wrap up the series on Saturday in a single game contest against the Shockers starting at 12:00 p.m. CST.

Game 1: Murray State 0, UE 3
Evansville struck first in the bottom of the first frame with a single through the left side by Fortner that put the Aces up on Murray State, 1-0.

The Aces continued to expand the score, 2-0, with a steal by senior Alicia Betancur and an error by the Racers.

UE kept it going in the fifth inning as a sacrifice fly by Fortner drove in another run for the Aces, making it a 3-0 game.

Murray State was unable to rally as the Aces left the Racers scoreless in the top of the seventh, with Evansville securing the victory, 3-0.

Senior pitcher Sarah Patterson took the win for Evansville as she pitched a complete 7.0 innings and struck out seven. Patterson did not allow any runs by Murray State as she moved to 5-5 on the season.

Murray State pitcher Shelby Kosmecki suffered the loss, pitching 6.0 innings and striking out seven. Kosmecki moved to 5-10 on the season.

Game 2: Murray State 6, UE 3
The Aces once again came out strong as they scored two runs in the bottom of the first off a single by senior Kendall Kautz, taking an early 2-0 lead.

Murray State answered back in the third frame with a ground out single that made it a 2-1 game with Evansville still in the lead.

UE answered back with a run of its own as senior Tamara Robey was able to cross home plate after a wild pitch, extending the lead to 3-1.

The Racers were not going away as a two run homer to left field tied it up, 3-3, in the top of the fourth inning. Murray State once again tabbed a home run in the fifth, scoring three runs and taking the lead over the Aces, 6-3.

After a scoreless bottom of the fifth and sixth for Evansville, the Aces were unable to get anything going in the seventh inning as a ground out to the pitcher secured the last out. Murray State took the win, 6-3, over Evansville.

UE freshman pitcher Annie Moore took the loss as she allowed two runs in 2.0 innings of work. Moore has now moved to 0-6 on the season.

Murray State pitcher CheyAnne Gaskey improved to 7-5 on the season as she took the win for the Racers. Gaskey struck out six in a complete 7.0 innings in the circle while allowing three runs.

* Aces Fall at Western Kentucky, 8-5

The University of Evansville baseball team could not overcome an early deficit, as the Purple Aces fell, 8-5, to Western Kentucky in a midweek contest Wednesday night at Nick Denes Field in Bowling Green, Ky.

Redshirt sophomore Kevin Kaczmarski led Evansville (9-15) with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate that included a two-run home run and two RBI.  Sophomore Kyle Pollock also finished the night with three hits in five at-bats and drove in a run.  Senior Andy Lasher contributed a pair of hits and scored a run, while junior David Patton went 2-for-5 with a run scored.

Freshman Connor Strain (0-1) suffered the loss on the mound in his first career start, giving up four earned runs on four hits and recording a strikeout in 3.0 innings.

Western Kentucky (14-11) set the tone for the evening by scoring three runs in the bottom half of the first.  Scott Wilcox reached on a one-out single, before Regan Flaherty drew a walk and both runners advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch.  Devin Kelly drove in the Hilltoppers’ first run with a ground out to short, Ryan Huck followed with a run-scoring double and Ryan Messex capped the inning with an RBI single to center to put WKU in front 3-0.

The Aces answered back in the top of the third when Kaczmarski belted a two-run homer right that scored Patton and cut Western Kentucky’s lead to 3-2, but the Hilltoppers got a run back in their half of the frame on a sacrifice fly from Huck that allowed Flaherty to tag and score from third.

WKU struck again in the fourth to open up a 6-2 advantage, as Trevor Lowe and Flaherty each drove in runs with RBI singles off of UE reliever Phillip Diehl, who replaced Strain to start the inning.  Ryan Billo limited the damage by coming out of the bullpen and recording a pair of strikeouts for the final two outs of the frame.

Evansville got back within striking distance in the sixth by pushing across a pair of runs to cut the deficit to 6-4.  Pollock plated senior Chris Pearson with a base hit to left and redshirt junior Nick Hathcoat delivered a one-out sacrifice fly to left to brought in redshirt junior Johnny Day.

Western Kentucky pushed its lead back to four by scoring two more runs in its half of the seventh to put the game out of reach.  Adam Lavelle led off the inning with a solo homer to right and Steve Hodgins followed with a single to right.  Wilcox later drove in Hodgins with a single through the right side for the Hilltoppers’ final tally.

The Aces took advantage of a WKU error to plate their final run in the eighth, as Lasher was able to scamper home following a miscue by the Western Kentucky shortstop to make the final score 8-5.

UE will return to Missouri Valley Conference play this weekend, when it travels to Peoria, Ill., for a three-game set with Bradley.  The Aces and Braves will open the series Friday at 6 p.m.
