History Spring Lecture to Feature Harlaxton College's David Green
|
|
This year’s History Department Spring Lecture will feature Dr. David Green, Lecturer in History and British Studies at Harlaxton College. The event is free and open to the public, and faculty, staff, students and the campus community are invited to attend. The lecture, titled "The English Empire in the Later Middle Ages," will take place from 4-5:30 p.m. Thursday, March 21 in Eykamp Hall, Room 251A.
This speaking engagement represents in integral part of Dr. Green’s on-going research program which explores ‘colonial’ practices and attitudes at work in the dominions of the later medieval English monarchy (England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Gascony, and Normandy).
By March 2013 Dr. Green will have published four articles in international peer-reviewed journals and essay collections, including the Journal of British Studies and the Journal of Historical Sociology. Another important element in this project is a major international conference (the Harlaxton Medieval Symposium) which Dr. Green will convene alongside colleagues from the universities of York and East Anglia (both in the U.K.). Together these scholarly activities form an innovative research program which examines, through a comparative and interdisciplinary approach, a period of fundamental change in the construction of the English nation.
Dr. Green’s research trajectory and findings have been shaped, in part, by the core course in British Studies required of all students at Harlaxton College with its focus on the construction of the British nation, its identity, and the relationships between its component parts. Accordingly, research from this program will be used to inform the teaching of this course, particularly the recently developed Honors section, which will sustain and enrich the curricular and co-curricular experience of UE students at Harlaxton in accordance with the university’s Strategic Plan Core Goal 1.

Help Take a Stand on BULLYING
|
|
UE Chaplain Tammy Gieselman is encouraging the UE community to help take a stand on bullying by going to see the movie Bully on Thursday, April 4 at 7:30 p.m. The film will be shown at the AMC Theaters on Evansville’s west side. Please order your tickets in advance at www.tugg.com/events/3160
Directed by Sundance and Emmy-award winning filmmaker Lee Hirsch, BULLY is a beautifully cinematic, character-driven documentary. At its heart are those with huge stakes in this issue whose stories each represent a different facet of America’s bullying crisis. Bully follows five kids and families over the course of a school year. Stories include two families who have lost children to suicide and a mother awaiting the fate of her 14-year-old daughter who has been incarcerated after bringing a gun on her school bus. With an intimate glimpse into homes, classrooms, cafeterias and principals’ offices, the film offers insight into the often cruel world of the lives of bullied children. As teachers, administrators, kids and parents struggle to find answers, BULLY examines the dire consequences of bullying through the testimony of strong and courageous youth. Through the power of their stories, the film aims to be a catalyst for change in the way we deal with bullying as parents, teachers, children and society as a whole.

Evening Prayer with Lessons of Tenebrae
|
|
Holy Week Services in Neu Chapel will include a service of EVENING PRAYER on Sunday, March 24, in the Chapel sanctuary beginning at 7:30 p.m. The service of Psalms, readings, and music will include the rarely heard Lessons of Tenebrae (Leçons de ténèbres) by Francois Couperin “Le Grand” (1668-1733). The Couperin work is a set of three pieces for voice, harpsichord, and continuo written expressly for Holy Week in 1715. The text comes from the Lamentations of Jeremiah in which the prophet mourns the destruction of Jerusalem and the Holy Temple. In the Christian tradition, the Leçons capture the mood of Holy Week following the betrayal and abandonment of Jesus by his disciples.
Musicians for the Couperin work include Kirk Rich, harpsichord; sopranos Claire Daniels and Lindsey McLennan; and Pedro Funes, gamba.
Kirk Rich studied organ at the University of Evansville during his four years at Memorial High School. Winner of the 2007 American Guild of Organists/Quimby Competition for Young Organists (Region V), he has performed in the United States, France, and England, and as a “Rising Star” at the 2008 National Convention of the American Guild of Organists in Minneapolis, Minnesota. In 2009 he was a semi-finalist in the André Marchal International Organ Competition in Biarritz, France. Currently he is a master’s candidate in organ and harpsichord performance at Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music. He serves as Assistant Director of Music at First Christian Church in Bloomington, Indiana.
Vocalists Claire Daniels and Lindsey McLennan are pursuing masters degrees in early music at Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music. At IU, Daniels sings in Concentus and the Pro Arte Singers. McLennan recently made her debut with the Indianapolis Baroque Orchestra in concerts of Bach’s Lutheran Mass in A Major and performed as soloist with the IU New Music Ensemble in the world premiere of David Dzubay’s Producing ForA While.
Pedro Funes, gambist, is currently pursuing his Master's Degree in Early Music at Indiana University, where he is the recipient of an Associate Instructorship. He is a member of the viol consort Les Touches and medieval ensemble Los Musicos de Alfonso.

UE Baseball Falls at UT Martin, 8-3
|
|
The University of Evansville baseball team fell, 8-3, to UT Martin in a midweek matchup Wednesday night at Skyhawk Park in Martin, Tenn. Senior Chris Pearson drove in a pair of runs with a two-run home run in the fifth, but the Skyhawks preserved an early lead to earn the victory.
Seven Evansville (8-12) players each notched a hit apiece to account for the Aces’ seven hits on the evening, but UE committed two fielding errors that led to a pair of unearned runs. Redshirt sophomore Kevin Kaczmarski finished 1-for-5 to extend his on-base streak to 38 games and junior David Patton drove in Evansville’s only other run, going 0-for-2 with a pair of walks.
UT Martin (8-13) got to UE starter Ryan Billo (1-2) early in the game, as the Skyhawks plated three runs on five hits in the second inning and added two more in the third to take a 5-0 lead. Hagen Nelson, Nico Zych and Grant Glasser each came through with RBI singles for UTM in the second, while Haynes doubled in a run and Zych drew a bases-loaded walk in the third.
UE cut the lead to 5-3 with a three-run fifth that was highlighted by Pearson’s two-run blast to left. Sophomore Kyle Pollock reached on an error to start the inning and senior Jason Hockemeyer followed by reaching on a fielder’s choice, before Pearson cleared the bases with his homer. Later in the frame, Patton coaxed a walk with the bases loaded to bring home redshirt junior Johnny Day for Evansville’s third run.
UT Martin added insurance runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth, and Skyhawks’ reliever Carter Smith tossed four scoreless innings out of the bullpen, allowing just two hits, while striking out six.
Billo, who took the loss on the mound, was one of seven pitchers used by the Aces. The senior righty allowed five runs on eight hits and struck out two over 2.2 innings. Freshman Brent Jurceka was the most effective UE pitcher, as he allowed just one run and struck out two in 3.1 frames of relief.
Glassed led UTM by going 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored, Nelson finished 1-for-3 with a pair of RBI and a run scored and Zych drove in two runs with a 1-for-3 effort at the plate.
Evansville will open Missouri Valley Conference play this weekend, when it welcomes Creighton to Braun Stadium for a three-game set beginning Friday at 6 p.m.
