WUEV Radiothon Fund Drive this Week!
|
|
All this week, 91.5 F.M.-WUEV will be conducting a “Radiothon” to help kick off its 2013 Fund Drive at the University of Evansville. WUEV will try to staff each hour this week with live deejays to take requests and help raise awareness of the 2013 Fund Drive.“We’re hoping to have a little fun this week, and help spread the word of what we are trying to do here at the radio station,” said WUEV General Manager Tom Benson. “As a non-commercial station, we rely on private support to help drive what we do at the radio station, and to help support a learning environment for University of Evansville students at the station.
“The goal of the ‘Radiothon’ this week is to increase the awareness of our fund drive, which will help support equipment upgrades that are needed at the radio station. We also want to connect with our listeners and thank them for being supportive of the station this week.”
Listeners and supporters can both make song requests, as well as make pledges to WUEV by contacting the radio station by phone at (812) 488-2020 this week. Donations can also be made by visiting the newly redesigned wuev.org website. WUEV will maintain its typical format for the most part during the “Radiothon,” with the only changes occurring between the hours of midnight and 8 am, where student deejays will be allowed to pick the format.
“Our deejays are really excited about this ‘Radiothon,’ as they get to have some creative freedom and are able to connect with our listeners more,” said Benson. “The deejays were really the ones wanting to do this ‘Radiothon,’ and I am all for it.
“Hopefully, we will be able to reconnect better with our listeners this week, and also inform some people about how easy it is to support our radio station. With the new website design, it is extremely easy, and every little bit of support we get really goes a long way for us. We cannot thank our listeners and supporters enough for what they allow us to do at the radio station.”

Cowgill Award in Creative Writing
|
|
The Department of Creative Writing announces the Cowgill Award in Creative Writing in honor of Major and Mrs. George Cowgill
George and Mary Cowgill believed in the power of a good education and the potential freedom and opportunity higher education could provide. Though he achieved much in his life, often through determination and a knack for being in the right place at the right time, Mr. Cowgill felt he could have achieved more if he had earned a college degree and instilled this belief in his sons. Mrs. Cowgill taught English for many years and continued her own education, eventually becoming a high school guidance counselor, where she helped many students in their search for the right college. A number of those students attended the University of Evansville, including her son Michael (BFA, creative writing, ’95). In her retirement, she volunteered at St. Gerard, a high school for pregnant teenagers in St. Augustine, Florida.
Mr. and Mrs. Cowgill both worked hard and made sacrifices so their sons could attend college. Though creative writing wasn’t their first choice of major, they supported Michael’s choice both at UE and later at the graduate level at George Mason University. They were lifelong readers and considered writing an honorable profession. Michael honors their spirit and memories with this gift to the Department of Creative Writing.

Balentine And Ryan Lead UE To Win At WSU
|
|
The Purple Aces men's basketball team took a 17-3 lead to open the game and never looked back, taking a 70-58 win over Wright State in BracketBusters action at the Nutter Center on Saturday afternoon."This is a great win for us, Wright State changed their defenses and our guys battled and battled," UE head coach Marty Simmons said. "Our guys stepped up in a big way today."
Colt Ryan led the way for UE (16-13, 8-8 MVC) with 21 points on 8-of-19 shooting. He also notched seven rebounds. D.J. Balentine was right behind him with 18. The freshman was 7-12 overall while knocking down four 3-pointers.
The game could not have started any better for UE as they scooted out to a 9-0 lead to begin the game. After a pair of free throws and a Colt Ryan layup, Ned Cox drained the first trey of the game. J.T. Yoho put WSU (18-10) on the board with a pair of free throws, but Evansville kept rolling as Egidijus Mockevicius had a put-back to make it a 13-2 lead at the 4-minute mark.
Evansville hit its first four shots while Wright State was 0-11 to begin the game with three turnovers. The Aces continued to add to the lead before Jerran Young hit the first bucket of the game for the Raiders to make it a 17-5 game.
With Evansville up 21-7, Wright State made its move, hitting six out of seven shots to cut the gap to 21-16 as part of a 9-0 run. D.J. Balentine put a quick end to that as he led an 8-0 rally, hitting a layup and two threes to put UE back up 29-16. Once again, Wright State fought back with an 11-3 run to get back within five, but Evansville came back as Balentine hit another three with five seconds remaining to send UE to the half up 39-28.
Yoho led everyone with 16 points in the first half while Balentine had 11. The Aces shot 53.6% (15-28) while holding Wright State to 30.3%.
Wright State came out on fire to start the second half. After Balentine opened up the second-half scoring, the Raiders posted 8 in a row thanks to a pair of threes as they cut the gap to five for the third time. Evansville had the answer once again, hitting three buckets in a row to end the run. Lewis Jones hit a pair of pivotal buckets in the run, which got him into double figures for the game.
Evansville would match its largest lead of 14 at 59-45 inside of seven minutes left but the Raiders would once again fail to give up. They got back into single digits, but the potential dagger came at the 4-minute mark as Balentine connected on his fourth trey to give the Aces a 14-point advantage (64-50). Six in a row by Colt Ryan put the icing on the cake as UE went up by 18 and would settle for the 70-58 win.
After ten years of BracketBusters play, the Aces finish with an even 5-5 mark. UE finished with a 37-31 rebounding edge while outshooting WSU 50%-35.8%.
Leading the way for Wright State was Yoho, who notched 20 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Jerran Young tallied 11 while Kendall Griffin finished the day with 10.
Conference play resumes for UE on Wednesday as the Aces travel to Wichita State for a 7 p.m. game. Next weekend, Evansville will wrap up the regular season next Saturday versus Indiana State with a 4 p.m. contest.

Evansville Comes Up Just Short in 66-63 Loss at Missouri State
|
|
The University of Evansville women’s basketball team forced a late turnover and had an opportunity to tie the game with a last-second shot, but sophomore Kat Taylor’s half-court heave missed just left and Missouri State held on for a 66-63 win Saturday night at JQH Arena in Springfield, Mo.
Senior Samantha Heck led three Evansville (8-17, 6-8 MVC) players in double figures with 17 points, going 7-for-11 from the field and 3-for-6 from three-point land. Sophomore Mallory Ladd added 15 points and hauled in seven boards, while freshman Laura Friday scored a career-high 14 points and hit four of her eight three-point attempts. Taylor pulled down a career-high eight rebounds to lead the Purple Aces on the glass.
UE scored the game’s first five points to grab the early lead, but Missouri State (14-13, 6-9 MVC) countered with an 8-2 run and led, 8-7, after a Kenzie Williams layup with 15:29 to play in the first half.
The Lady Bears continued to add to their lead, as a three-point play by Tyonna Snow highlighted a 10-0 MSU run and Williams put Missouri State in front, 23-12, at the 7:50 mark, after a steal and a layup, as the Lady Bears held Evansville without a field goal for over nine minutes.
With 4:40 remaining in the opening stanza, MSU built its lead to 16 at 31-15, but the Aces responded with a furious rally out of the final media timeout of the first half, hitting four three-pointers for a 12-0 run that cut Missouri State’s lead to just four at 31-27 with just over two minutes to play in the half.
Senior Meagan Collins knocked down a 10-foot jumper just before the halftime horn to make the score, 33-31, in favor of the Lady Bears heading into the locker room.
Heck put Evansville in front, 34-33, by draining a three from the right wing on the first possession of the second half, but it was short lived, as MSU regained the lead at 38-36 on a Snow jumper with 16:28 remaining.
Just under four minutes later, Friday hit a trey from the left wing, before dishing out a pass to Ladd, who converted a layup to cap a 9-0 Aces’ run and give UE a 45-41 lead with 12:42 showing on the clock.
Friday connected on another long-rang shot at the 10:11 mark to give Evansville its largest lead at 50-45, but Missouri State once again had an answer and knotted the score, 51-51, on a free throw by Williams following a flagrant foul that was whistled against Taylor.
It was a back-and-forth contest over the last six minutes with each team grabbing the lead on a pair of occasions until Friday tied the game at 60-60 with her fourth triple of the game with 1:38 remaining.
The Lady Bears scored six of the game’s next seven points and appeared to have put the game away when Karly Buer sank a pair of free throws to give MSU a 66-61 lead with just 24.0 seconds to play.
However, Heck hit a long two to pull Evansville back within one possession with 2.9 ticks left and the Aces forced a turnover on MSU’s inbound attempt, before setting up Taylor’s desperation shot.
The Aces hit 11 of their 27 three-point attempts (40.7%), while Missouri State connected on just five of its 19 shots from long range (26.3%), but the Lady Bears owned the glass, outrebounding UE, 45-35, and scoring 17 second-chance points on 17 offensive rebounds.
MSU also controlled the paint, scoring 30 points inside the lane to Evansville’s 16.
Four players scored in double figures for Missouri State, including Williams, who led the Lady Bears with 17 points on a 7-for-19 shooting performance. Buer added 15 points and Edie finished with 14 points and a game-high nine rebounds.
Evansville will be back at the Ford Center for its next two games that will mark its final two home games of the year. The Aces will host Northern Iowa Friday, March 1 at 7 p.m., before hosting Bradley Sunday at 1 p.m. for its annual Senior Day.

Aces Fall in Series Finale at No. 1 Arkansas
|
|
The University of Evansville baseball team was held to just three hits against top-ranked Arkansas Sunday afternoon at Baum Stadium in Fayetteville, Ark., as the Razorbacks completed the sweep of the Purple Aces with a 10-2 win.
Evansville (1-5) starter Kyle Lloyd allowed four runs on eight hits in his 6.0 innings of work, notching three strikeouts around two walks and exited the game with UE trailing, 4-2, but Arkansas (7-1) broke open the game with a five-run seventh, recording six of its 16 hits in that frame.
“Unfortunately this was another game that got away from us on a big inning that was given up by our bullpen,” head coach Wes Carroll said. “Hopefully we are a better team by having come down here to Arkansas and playing in front of some big crowds. Overall, it was a great experience for our guys and hopefully we will start seeing the rewards from it Tuesday at UT Martin.”
The Razorbacks plated a pair of runs in their first at-bat, getting an RBI single from Eric Fisher and added a run in the bottom of the fourth, when Jake Wise single home Brian Anderson to give Arkansas a 3-0 lead after four innings.
UE cut the lead to 4-2 in its half of the fifth, when senior Jason Hockemeyer scored on an RBI single by senior Chris Pearson and freshman Shain Showers delivered a sacrifice fly to center that allowed senior Andy Lasher to tag and score.
Jacob Mahan belted a solo homer for Arkansas in the bottom of the sixth to push the Razorbacks’ lead to 5-2, before freshman Phillip Diehl took over on the mound for Lloyd prior to Arkansas’ half of the seventh. The Razorbacks wasted no time jumping on Diehl, scoring three runs on five hits, including a two-run single by Anderson that put Arkansas in front 8-2.
With just one out in the inning, senior Josh Biggs replaced Diehl and got the final two outs, but not before the Razorbacks scored two more runs on a single to left by Wise for the final tallies of the game.
Lloyd (0-1) took the loss in his first decision of the year, while Arkansas starter Trey Killian (1-0) recorded his first collegiate win by going 4.2 innings and allowing just two unearned runs on two hits.
Arkansas’ bullpen was extremely effective against the Aces, as four Razorback relievers combined to allow just one hit over the last 4.1 innings.
UE will return to the diamond for a pair of midweek games against UT Martin and Vanderbilt. Evansville will take on the Skyhawks Tuesday, Feb. 26, at 3 p.m. in Martin, Tenn., before making the trip to Nashville, Tenn., Wednesday, Feb. 27, for a 4 p.m. tilt with the nationally-ranked Commodores.
