Anthony Beavers

|
Anthony Beavers' article "Historicizing Floridi: The Question of Method, The State of the Profession, and the Timeliness of Floridi's Philosophy of Information," recently published in the Italian journal Etica & Politica / Ethics and Politics 13.2 (2011): 255-275, is soon to be translated into French for the journal Implications philosophiques as "Historiciser Floridi : la philosophie de l'information de Luciano Floridi à la lumière des question de méthode, de son actualité et du statut du métier de philosophe" and into Spanish for the Columbian journal Escritos as "Floridi historizado: La cuestión del método, el estado de la profesión y la oportunidad de la Filosofía Información de Luciano Floridi." Both translations are set to appear in 2013. The article takes Floridi's philosophy of information and reinterprets it from an historical point of view to show how changes in the flow of information have restructured the discipline of philosophy from the Greeks up to the current day. In so doing, it examines philosophy's relevance in the current information climate and how it must change in order to remain pertinent. Colt Ryan's 13-Point Effort Lifts UE To 72-46 Win
|
|
Colt Ryan, who missed two of the last three games, scored a team-high 13 points as the Purple Aces men’s basketball team won its fourth in a row, cruising to a 72-46 win over Alabama A&M on Monday night at the Ford Center.Ryan hit three 3-pointers in the win while notching seven assists. Ned Cox finished with 11 points while Jaylon Moore set a career mark with 10 points, his first double-digit outing for the Aces (4-2). After being outrebounded by a 20-18 margin in the first half, Evansville rallied to finish with a 42-36 advantage in that department. Egidijus Mockevicius and Troy Taylor had six apiece.
“We played very well in spurts,” Aces head coach Marty Simmons said. “The guys really rose to the challenge over the last four games; our team really stepped up. We still have a lot to improve on, but we are working towards our goals each day.”
It was Alabama A&M (2-3) who had the early advantage as Evansville began the game 1-of-6 from the floor with a pair of turnovers. Ned Cox got UE on the board with a trey before Troy Taylor and Jaylon Moore picked up buckets to give Evansville a 7-6 lead seven minutes into the contest.
Later, Colt Ryan, who missed two of the last three games, came off the bench to knock down his first three-pointer of the season to put the Aces up 12-9. His bucket sparked the offense as they went on an 11-0 run to jump out to a 20-9 lead. Egidijus Mockevicius had a strong dunk off of a Troy Taylor steal as UE hit 7-of-11 shots after its slow start.
Evansville held the Bulldogs without a field goal for a span of 8:55 before taking a 38-21 lead at halftime. Ryan led UE with 8 points in the period as all ten players who saw action scored at least two points in the half. Nine out of ten contributed on the boards, grabbing at least one rebound.
Mockevicius came out firing in the second half. His back-to-back buckets helped Evansville go up by 20 before the lead continued to grow. The Purple Aces hit eight of their first 16 shots of the second frame while the defense held the Bulldogs to 0-10 shooting before a Justan Banks dunk at the 10-minute mark cut the Aces lead to 60-26.
The lead reached as many as 39 (65-26) with eight minute to go before Evansville cruised to the 72-46 win. Freshman D.J. Balentine put forth another solid effort, hitting 4-of-8 shots to tally nine while fellow frosh Mockevicius added three more blocks to give him a total of 11 on the season.
Brandon Ellis led the Bulldogs with 12 points while Demarquelle Tabb hauled in nine rebounds. AAMU shot 30.6% on the night while the Aces were 44.4% from the field.
A trip to Fort Collins, Colo. awaits the Aces this weekend as they will square off against Colorado State as part of the MVC/Mountain West Challenge. The Aces and Rams will play on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. CT before coming home for its next four contests.

Volleyball Signs A Pair For 2013
|
|
University of Evansville head women’s volleyball coach Mike Swan has announced the signing of Alysia Baznik and Kristen Koncelik to National Letters of Intent to begin play for the Purple Aces beginning next season.“We are thrilled to add Alysia and Kristen to our roster,” Swan said. “They have been outstanding players for their high schools and both play for the top club program in the country, Sports Performance.”
Baznik will come to UE from Naperville, Ill. where she played at Naperville Central. She was recently named to the Chicago Sun-Times 2012 Girls All-Area Volleyball Team as she finished her senior campaign with 304 kills, 176 digs and 58 aces in her senior campaign. Baznik has seen time at each position on the floor.
Along with her All-Area honor, the 5-10 Baznik was selected as a 2012 All-Star for SportsTownChicago.com’s 3rd annual Illinois High School Volleyball All Star Game, which will be held on December 1. Prior to her senior season, she spent time as a setter where in 2011 she notched 485 assists to go along with 231 kills and 102 digs. She has been named an All-Conference, All-Area First Team, All-Academic and All-Tournament Team player in her high school career.
“Alysia is a great athlete; she can pass, set, hit and play solid defense,” Swan continued. “A super competitor and teammate, Alysia makes everyone around her on the court much better because she plays with confidence and enthusiasm.”
Joining Baznik in the class is middle hitter Kristen Koncelik. A native of Downers Grove, Ill., Koncelik will come to Evansville from Batavia High School. Koncelik received four letters in high school while being a presence in the middle. She is the all-time blocks leader at her high school with 273 while leading the way for her squad with 111 in 2011 (26 solo and 85 assists). Last summer, she was named an All-American at the AAU’s.
Koncelik was named to the All-Conference Team (Upstate 8 Conference) in 2010 and 2012 while receiving an Honorable Mention in 2011. While her blocking totals are impressive on their own, she is an extremely talented hitter, who registered a 47% kill rate in 2011 in 555 attempts while notching 223 kills in her senior campaign. Her top season in high school came in 2010 where she led Batavia to a 36-6 mark.
“Kristen is an extremely physical player who hits with much power and intelligence. Her blocking skills were something that stood out when we saw her play last club season,” Swan commented. “We expect her to be challenge our returning middles immediately because she is fast and aggressive.”
