Aces Set School Record in 74-65 Win over Spartans
|
|
The University of Evansville women’s basketball team knocked down a school-record 15 three-pointers Saturday afternoon en route to a 74-65 win over San Jose State in its home opener at the Ford Center. Senior forward Samantha Heck posted a double-double for UE by scoring 18 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.
Heck was joined by redshirt sophomore Khristian Hart in double figures, as Hart finished 5-for-13 from three-point land and 3-for-5 at the free throw line for 18 points. Ta’Rea Cunnigan led San Jose State with a game-high 28 points and 10 rebounds.
SJSU dominated the interior, putting up 40 points inside the paint and scored 20 points off of 20 UE turnovers. The Aces countered by winning the battle of the boards, grabbing 42 rebounds to the Spartans’ 35, including 13 on the offensive glass that led to 12 second-chance points.
San Jose State took an early 8-4 lead, but the Aces surged out of the first media timeout with an 11-0 run that included a trio of three-pointers by Meagan Collins, Khristian Hart and Kat Taylor to capture a 15-8 advantage.
Laura Friday gave Evansville its largest lead of the first half at 21-11 by draining back-to-back treys, the first three-point baskets of her career, at the 11:02 mark.
Later in the first stanza, the Spartans went on a run of their own and knotted the game at 28-28 on a driving layup by Cunnigan that capped a 10-0 SJSU run.
Taylor Ware ended the run with a deep three from the left corner, one of nine first-half triples by the Aces, which sparked an 11-4 UE run to close the half and give Evansville a 39-32 advantage heading into the locker room.
Both teams traded baskets to open the second half, but San Jose State eventually chipped away at the UE margin and tied the game at 52-52 with 9:40 remaining in the contest. The Spartans used the momentum to go on a 10-3 run and take its largest lead of the game at 62-55.
The Aces responded with a run of their own and retook the lead when senior Chelsea Falkenstein knocked down Evansville’s 14th shot from beyond the arc to tie the single-game school record and give UE a 63-62 lead with 4:16 remaining. Falkenstein finished with eight points and nine rebounds off the bench for the Aces.
Hart hit the record-breaking trifecta at the 2:13 mark for one of her five triples, marking the second time this season that the redshirt sophomore has hit five shots from outside the arc. Hart’s three-pointer was part of a 19-3 run that the Aces used to close the game and secure the win.
San Jose State shot 43.9 percent from the field (25-for-57), but the Evansville defense held SJSU to a 14.3 percent clip from long range (2-for-14). The Aces knocked down 38.7 percent of their shots from the floor (24-for-62) and connected on 40.5 percent of their three-point attempts (15-for-37).
Evansville will have just a two-day break until it returns to the court, as the Aces will be on the road at Murray State for a 7:00 p.m. contest Tuesday, Nov. 20, in Murray, Ky.

Aces Rally For 49-44 Win Over Western Illinois
|
|
Jordan Jahr led the University of Evansville with 13 points, including 3 three-pointers in the second half as the Purple Aces improved to 2-2 with a 49-44 win over Western Illinois on Saturday at the Ford Center.
"I am really proud of my team, three games in three days against really good competition, for these guys to reach down the last few minutes like they did was outstanding,” Aces head coach Marty Simmons said. “Our guys made special plays that helped us to win.”
Jahr hit four shots while tying Troy Taylor for the team high in rebounds wigh eight. Ned Cox finished the night with 11 points while D.J. Balentine, fresh off of a 16-point outing against Yale, tallied seven.
In a slow start on the offensive side, the teams combined to miss their first seven shots before Terell Parks got WIU on the board over two minutes in. Evansville’s drought continued until Lewis Jones scored on a floater on UE’s sixth shot of the game.
Parks continued to lead the Leathernecks, scoring eight early points as WIU began the game 7-of-13 en route to a 14-4 lead. The Aces started the game 2-11 before embarking on a 7-0 stretch, led by a D.J. Balentine bucket to make it a 14-10 game in favor of the Leathernecks midway through the opening stanza.
Seven players found their way onto the scoresheet in the first 15 minutes as a Ned Cox bucket brought UE within a pair at 18-16 before Jordan Jahr scored on the break to knot it up at 18-18. With 3:32 left in the first half, Balentine continued to show his touch, giving Evansville its first advantage of the contest at 21-20. As the half was running out, Parks notched his 16th point of the period as WIU went to halftime up 26-24.
Jahr connected on his first three-pointer of the season four minutes into the half to put Evansville back on top at 29-28, but with UE up 31-30, WIU went on a 9-2 run to take a six-point edge midway through the latter frame. With their deficit standing at 42-34 and having missed eight shots in a row, Jaylon Moore injected life into UE, hitting an and-one before Jahr notched another three to make it a one-possession game at 42-40.
Over that stretch, WIU turned the ball over seven-consecutive trips down the floor in a span where they went scoreless for 8:28. They missed all five shots while turning it over eight times. The Aces chipped away before Jahr's third trey of the game gave UE the lead for good with 2:39 left. Balentine sealed the deal, making all four free throws in the final 29 seconds to make it a 49-44 final.
For just the second time in his career, Jahr registered back-to-back double-digit outings. The first time was in his first two games at UE in his freshman campaign. Parks led the Leathernecks with 21 points and 11 rebounds, both game highs.
WIU outshot UE by a .426-.354 margin while winning the rebounding battle, 37-29.
Evansville will have just two days to rest up before seeing action once against. The Aces are set to take on Tennessee Tech at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday evening in Cookeville, Tenn.

Illinois State Takes 3-1 Win In Fianle
|
|
Emma Roberson led the University of Evansville once again with 13 kills, but Illinois State finished UE’s season, taking a 3-1 win on Saturday evening. With the loss, Evansville finishes its season with a 9-22 mark, along with a 4-14 MVC record. Rachel TenHoor and Ashley Ring each finished the night with 10 kills. Illinois State was led by Brooklyn Hlafka and Emily Schneider, who had 13 kills apiece.
It was Evansville taking the early advantage in the match, winning by a 25-22 final in the first frame. Illinois State got the early jump as they scored the first three points before extending it to 7-3 on a double block.
The Aces fought back, eventually tying the set up at 11-all on a 6-0 stretch that saw Emma Roberson notch two kills. The Redbirds made their run, tying the game up at 21 before UE finished on a 4-1 stretch as Roberson capped it off with two more kills.
Illinois State reeled off the first three points in the second set and did not look back, winning by a score of 25-19. The Aces got within a pair at 10-8, but ISU retook its advantage, leading by six on two occasions before winning by that amount.
Their momentum carried over into the third game as ISU jumped out to an early 8-2 lead before UE rallied. Down 16-10, Evansville scored six in a row as Ashley Ring had three aces and two kills. Meaghan Holmes and Rachel TenHoor also had two block assists each in the stretch. The rally was too little, too late, though, as Illinois State, with the game tied at 19-19, scored six of the final seven to take a 25-20 win.
Another quick start got Illinois State on track in the fourth game as they went up 4-1 before stretching the lead to 12-6. Evansville was unable to muster the offense that it needed, falling 25-16.
