Coming Up Sunday: Patricia H. Snyder Concert and Lecture Series Event
|
|
The next event in UE's Patricia H. Snyder Concert & Lecture Series features archaeologist David Ilan who will discuss "Recent Archaeological Discoveries in Israel and Why They Matter." The lecture is free and open to the public at 2:00 p.m. this Sunday, November 11 at Temple Adath B'nai Israel, 8440 Newburgh Road in Evansville.
Dr. Ilan is the director of the Nelson Glueck School of Biblical Archaeology at Hebrew Union College in Jerusalem.
A native of Los Angeles, Ilan has lived in Israel since 1976. His work focuses on the land of Israel and the world of the Bible. His publications deal with a wide range of subjects, including northern Israel in the early Iron Age (the biblical period of the Judges), the archaeology of death, and the problem of antiquities plunder and trade.
One of his most recent publications is a chapter in the volume Household Archaeology in Ancient Israel and Beyond (Brill, 2011), co-edited by Jennie Ebeling, chair of the UE Department of Archaeology and Art History.
Made possible through an endowment from the late Patricia H. Snyder, trustee and longtime friend of the University of Evansville, the Patricia H. Snyder Concert & Lecture Series was created in 1997 to bring speakers or performers of national or international renown to Evansville at no cost to the public. The concerts and lectures in this series span a wide variety of topics, and are aimed at both the Evansville and campus communities. Events are free and open to the public.
Dr. Ilan’s lecture is presented in partnership with Temple Adath B’Nai Israel, with additional support from the Bronstein Foundation, Casino Aztar, and the Evansville Courier & Press.

James MacLeod to Speak at Andiron Lecture on November 7
|
|
The next Andiron Lecture is Wednesday, November 7, at 4:00 p.m. in Eykamp 252, Ridgway University Center. A social gathering with beverages begins at 3:45 p.m. The speaker will be Professor of History James MacLeod. His topic will be "To the Greater Glory of God: Religion and Memorialization in 1920s Scotland."
MacLeod holds a PhD from the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. He taught history and British studies at Harlaxton College from 1994-99, and since 1999 he has taught history at UE. In 2003, he was honored with the Exemplary Teacher Award, presented by the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry of The United Methodist Church. He is the author of The Second Disruption: The Free Church in Victorian Scotland and the Origins of the Free Presbyterian Church (Tuckwell Press, 2000) and numerous articles and chapters of books. His research interests are war, war memorials, and religion. His grandfather was a stretcher bearer in World War I.
The First World War killed around 10 million men and helped shape the modern world. The war had a devastating impact on traditional religious belief, especially in formerly pious countries like Scotland. Through an analysis of around one thousand Scottish war memorials, mostly erected in the early 1920s, this lecture is a measurement of the extent to which religion continued to be a force in society. This involves a discussion of not only location and form, but also iconography and inscriptions, and is one way to assess the real impact war had on traditional religion in Scotland.
For further information, call the series coordinator M. Christine Mohn at 812-488-2585 or the College of Arts and Sciences at 812-488-2589.
