* Power Outage scheduled for Schroeder Residence Hall

There will be an electrical power outage affecting Schroeder Residence Hall from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. on Monday, October 8 This outage is required in order for Vectren to replace some switching equipment on the distribution line.

* UE Women's Basketball to Host Pancake Breakfast

The University of Evansville women’s basketball team will host a pancake breakfast Saturday, Oct. 20, from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the brand new Fifth Third Bank Basketball Practice Facility.

The pancake breakfast will provide an opportunity for individuals of all ages in the Evansville community to not only meet the 2012-13 Purple Aces, but also view the new practice facility as the team prepares for the upcoming season. 

Tickets to the event will be sold at the door of the Fifth Third Bank Practice Facility and will be $5 for adults, $3 for kids ages six and up and free admission will be given to kids under six.

Be sure to attend to the event for your chance to meet head coach Oties Epps, his coaching staff and the 2012-13 Purple Aces.

* Attention Faculty: Event Planned to Develop Social Responsibility through New Classes

Attention faculty: UE and USI are co-hosting an event intended to develop ideas for social responsibility that can be addressed through new courses. If you are interested in learning about some specific projects that can addressed through a new or existing course, please RSVP to csi@evansville.edu. The Listening to Communities convention will take place on Tuesday, October 9 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Full attendance is requested. A continental Breakfast and a lunch will be provided.

Info You Should Know

* UE Artists & Crafters - Annual Christmas Art and Craft Sale Is Next Month!

An early reminder to the UE community of artists and crafters (In case you might want to bring supplies, crafts or artwork back from Fall Break.) The Department of Art plans to continue its annual tradition of hosting a Christmas Art and Craft Sale. The year's event is scheduled for two days: Thursday, November 29, from noon until 6:00 p.m. and Friday, November 30, from 7:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.  As it was last year, the location will be the Melvin Peterson Gallery.

Everyone in the UE community who makes art or crafts is invited to participate in these events.  This includes students, alumni, employees, spouses, children, relatives and friends.

To enter as a participant for the Art and Craft Sale or for more information, please phone the Department of Art office at 488-2043.  (A sample of work may be requested prior to inclusion as a participant in the sale.)

 

 
* Writing Center Open by "Special" Appointment During Fall Break

If you would like a Writing Center appointment during Fall Break, just email Linda Bathon at lb24@evansville.edu at least 24 hours in advance of the day and time you wish to visit with a mentor. She will arrange a special appointment for you. For normal scheduling purposes, i.e., via the online appointment calendar, the Writing Center will close at 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5, and reopen at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10.

Athletics

* UE Men's Golf Right Back In Action

After playing earlier this week at Cleveland State, the University of Evansville men’s golf team will have a quick turnaround, playing at the John Dallio Memorial this weekend.DePaul University is playing host to the tournament, which also includes Chicago State, Columbia, DePaul, Eastern Illinois, Green Bay, IUPUI, Loyola-Chicago, Marquette, Northern Illinois, Northern Iowa, Oakland, SIUE, Valparaiso and Western Illinois.

Ruffled Feathers Golf Club in Lemont, Ill. will play host to the event, which is a par 72 and is 6,898 yards long. 

Quinn Vilneff led the Purple Aces earlier this week at the Cleveland State Invitational.  Vilneff shot a 225 in the 3-round event en route to a tie for 13th place.  Vilneff notched three rounds in the 70’s, including a low of 74 in the second round of play.

Alex Turner kept up his solid play as he finished in a tie for 22nd with a 227 while the third UE player on the leaderboard was Rick VoyVodic, who carded a 240 to tie for 56th.  Freshman Will Knights, playing as an individual in the event, finished in a tie for 45th place, but shot the lowest round of the tournament for UE, recording an even 72 in the second round.

After playing at DePaul, the men have a quick turnaround as they will participate in the Butler Intercollegiate, which is set for Monday and Tuesday at Highland Country Club in Indianapolis.  The last event of the fall season for UE is set for Oct. 22 and 23 at the Dayton Invitational.

 
* Women's Golf Ready For Butler Intercollegiate

A trip to Indianapolis awaits the University of Evansville women’s golf team as they will take part in the Butler Intercollegiate.Set for Monday and Tuesday, the event will take place at Highland Country Club.  Aside from the Aces, ten other teams are set to play including: Butler, Valparaiso, Bradley, Indiana State, IUPUI, Cleveland State, Loyola Chicago, Eastern Illinois, UW-Green Bay and Bowling Green.  Play gets underway with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. both days.

Last time out, Evansville took fifth place at the SIUE Intercollegiate.  Sydney Skiles led the way for the Aces as she tied for ninth place with a 166 over the two rounds.

She was followed by Dana Hayden, who registered the top finish of her career as she took 21st place after carding an 86 in the final round.  Paige Crafton was just behind her with a 29th-place finish while Cathy Doyle and Kelly Lamarche rounded out the UE squad.

After playing at Butler the women have an off weekend before traveling to the Dayton Invitational on Oct. 22 and 23.  On Oct. 29, Evansville will play host to the Braun Intercollegiate, which will be hosted by Quail Crossing Golf Club in Boonville, Ind.

 
* Cross Country Set For Tennessee Tech Invitational

The Purple Aces cross country teams will travel to Baxer, Tenn. to run in the Tennessee Tech Invitational on Friday. A 5-K women’s race is set to begin a 3 p.m. with the 8-K men’s race set for 3:45 p.m.  Aside from UE, Carson Newman, North Alabama, Tennessee State and Tennessee Tech will run in the women’s event while those schools along with Lipscomb will participate on the men’s side. 

Evansville is coming off of a strong performance in last weekend’s Greater Louisville Classic.  Kelby Jenkins, this week’s MVC Scholar Athlete of the Week, earned a third place finish in the event.  She set a personal record in the event, finishing in a time of 17:54.26. 

Lauren Zeabart came home in 34th with a time of 18:39.76 while Elizabeth Kingshott finished 86th out of the 337 runners who took part.

Josh Genet was the top performer on the men’s side.  He took 21st on the strength of a 25:67.76 in the 8-K race.  Finishing behind him was Cody Stein, who placed 36th with a time of 25:44.82.

After running at Tennessee Tech, the Aces will be back in town for the annual Evansville Invitational, which is slated to begin at 11 a.m. on Oct. 13.

 
* Volleyball Heads To Carbondale Today

A trip to Carbondale to face Southern Illinois awaits the University of Evansville volleyball team on Friday.The Aces and Salukis will square off on Friday evening at 7 p.m. inside Davis Gym.

Evansville earned its fourth sweep of the season last time out on Tuesday against UT-Martin.  Ashley Ring led the way once against for the Aces as she led everyone with 13 kills.  The sophomore from Madison, Wisc. Has notched at least nine kills in all but one match this season.

Senior Hannah Wilson has also been on a roll as of late.  In seven of the last nine matches, Wilson has recorded at least seven kills, including a pair of 14-kill efforts against Belmont and Indiana State.

Southern Illinois comes into Friday’s tilt sitting in a 3-way tie for third place in the Valley with a 4-2 league mark.  They are 14-3 overall following a 3-2 win over Murray State on Tuesday.  The Salukis took both home matches last week, earning identical 3-1 victories over Creighton and Drake.

SIU is led by Alysia Mayes, who sits atop the league in kills, averaging 3.82 per set.  Mayes is also the conference leader in service aces as she has registered 24 on the season.  Amy Drabant has played a large role in Mayes’ success as she leads the MVC in assists with 11.63 per set.

Over the last five years, the series has been evenly matched as the home squad is a perfect 10-0 over that span.  In 2006, the road teams won both matches while the last sweep happened in 2004 when SIU went 2-0 against the Aces.
