Jan Gunn Receives October Employee Excellence Award
|
|
The October 2012 Employee Excellence award has been presented to Jan Gunn, Student Loan Specialist in the Office of Financial Aid.
Since Jan came to work at UE in March 1973, she has devoted her time to helping students and their families with the student loan process. Jan is known as an expert in the financial aid industry. She has been required to keep up with countless versions and evolutions of both federal and private loans over her tenure here. She spends many hours assisting both students and parents on the phone and through email, helping them with their questions and problems. She also will regularly call a lender or federal loan servicer and assist with straightening out an error or complex situation. Jan meets personally with all graduating students who leave UE to provide "exit counseling" on their Perkins and Nursing Loans and advises students of special opportunities to have their loans deferred or cancelled.
She is a true professional who has represented UE so well over her career. Her enthusiasm is never wavering and she always gives her all. As one of the most seasoned employees at UE, her love for the University and sense of pride always shine through. Jan is a key element to the overall success of the Office of Financial Aid.
Jan plans to retire at the end of October 2012.

Think Outside the Lunch Box
|
|
UE’s faculty speaker series kicks off its third season this Thursday, October 4 at 12:00N at Old National Bank’s main branch in downtown Evansville. Payal Patel-Dovlatabadi, assistant professor and director of UE’s Public Health Program will present, The Flu and You: What to Know and How to Prepare.
In 2009, when the H1N1 pandemic swept across the globe, the event dominated news headlines, and public health authorities urged Americans to get vaccinated against the virus. While the flu receives much less attention in a typical year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that up to one in five Americans contract the flu each year, and more than 200,000 are hospitalized for flu-related complications.
Patel-Dovlatabadi’s presentation is timely with flu season fast approaching. She will present basic preparations for the flu and will discuss her research that finds that antibiotics are often misprescribed for the treatment of influenza, which contributes to the development of antibiotic resistance — a serious public health concern.
The UE community is encouraged to attend this public event. Attendees are welcome to eat lunch during the presentation. There is a restaurant conveniently located in the bank lobby.

The lecture begins at 4:00 p.m. A social gathering with beverages begins at 3:45 p.m. Schriber’s topic will be “Communication: It Seems So Easy, So Second Nature… Think Again!”

Every day we communicate, at work, at home, and at play, and every day we are misunderstood, misinterpreted, and even seen as indifferent to and by others. This presentation will explore communication and will focus on the ideas of psychologists William Schutz and Abraham Maslow as they give us insights into the question “Why do we communicate?” Schriber will discuss the three basic models of interpersonal communication: linear, interactive, and transactional and will explain how each works and how to use them to strengthen interpersonal communication. His lecture will consider the principles of communication and how knowing and practicing them helps us to be better communicators. In closing, he will summarize the guidelines for interpersonal communication competence.

Three Second-Half Goals Give Men's Soccer 3-0 Win at EIU
|
|
After a scoreless first half, the University of Evansville men’s soccer team scored three goals in a 15-minute span to earn a 3-0 victory over host Eastern Illinois Tuesday night at Lakeside Field in Charleston, Ill. The win was the second-straight for UE, as well as its second-consecutive shutout.
Despite the Panthers (2-9) taking the first shot of the match less than one minute into the contest, the Aces (6-3) gained control in the early going, taking the next five shot attempts and forcing EIU defensive to make a pair of team saves in the early stages of the 15th minute.
Evansville continued to fire away, outshooting Eastern Illinois, 11-5, over the first 45 minutes and putting seven of its shots on target. UE also held a 5-1 corner kick advantage at the break and did not allow any of EIU’s first half shots to reach goalkeeper Eric Teppen.
In the second half, the Aces began to convert on their chances, as Dylan Terry scored from close range in the 53rd minute off a pass from Jesse Sharp to put Evansville in front 1-0.
UE’s second goal came less than 12 minutes later, when Joel Craig found the back of the net for the first time this year by heading in a corner kick service from reining MVC Offensive Player of the Week Faik Hajderovic in the 64th minute. The assist was Hajderovic’s team-leading fifth of the season.
Hajderovic got on the score sheet for the second time in the 67th minute, scoring on a shot from 22 yards out to seal the 3-0 victory for the Aces. The goal was his fourth of the year and pushed his season point total to 13.
The shutout was the second of the season for Teppen, as he collected a trio of second-half saves. Offensively, Evansville tallied a season-high 20 shots and eight corner kicks. Eight Purple Aces attempted multiple shots with Craig, Terry and Mark Anthony Gonzalez leading the way with three each.
Evansville will return to action and look to run its winning streak to three games Saturday night at Arad McCutchan Stadium, when it hosts Marshall for a 7 p.m. match.
